Quite an interesting read concerning Magnetic Memory chips.

Not just magnets either... They are using proteins and bacteria for computer components which will mean MASSIVE leaps forward. They have already made a 50 TERABYTE DVD storage medium using this technology, so a hard drive could exceed in the regions of a few PETABYTES. RAM could see a huge boost too.

Unfortunately they have a short lifespan...But it's early days yet.

PS. Processors are also being tested with tiny magnets instead of transistors, and they far outperform any of todays or tomorrows ( :P ) processors. Conroe? What a turtoise...

Very interesting.

Bit worrying though as hard drive faults take up alot of our I.T work.

Imagine if everybody used Linux..... We would have nothing to do :(

If only NAND flash drives were cheaper, those Samsung already make can be bought easily enough - but the prices... horrendous...

The military have them for their mobile 'puters inside all nature of their combat hardware, eventually the memory degrades but it will still long outlast physical hard drives and has far superior read/write access times, does not get hot, does not fail in extreme temperatures, etc...

Ideal if you're a flyer pulling 4G's which would probably make a physical HDD rupture itself...

make mrproper
make menuconfig
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
cp /usr/src/kernel/linux/the\\ latest\\ RC/arch/i386/bzImage /boot/the_ latest_RC
vim /etc/lilo.config
lilo
/etc/rc/init.d/restart

Plenty to do :)
