Ok so it's the day that the spirits rise and the gossamer veil that separates the world of the living from the land of the dead is at it's thinnest.

When I gets home tonight after seeing Dara o'Briain I'm gonna want to watch a scary film.

Any suggestions/what's the scariest film you've ever seen?

Internet points for classics I don't have in my extensive DVD & VHS collection.

COME GET SOME!

I think Paranormal Activity is worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

Inb4 the no-imagination-atrons say it isn't scary.

The first Evil Dead is a good re-watch.

I'm not fanatical about horror and gratuitous gore, but a few suggestions of good classic films:

The Omen
The Shining
The Lost Boys
Alien

I remember Event Horizon was quite effective when I saw it (didn't know a thing about it before going into the cinema)

So far internet points for Paranormal activity - which I think I might have rent today and the Omen which I don't think I have a copy of on my shelf - seen it on TV several times tho'.

I think Paranormal Activity is worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

you could watch the last 20 minutes of it and get the same amount of scares as watching the whole film

first 10 fro atmosphere and the last 10 for the only 2 scary scenes in the film :L

I enjoyed Outpost..is that the Nazi Zombies one? (mixing my two most hated enemies)

Event Horizon was pap tho.

A few more ideas:

The Ninth Gate (not terrifyingly scary, but a good, less obvious choice)
Scream (the whole trilogy)
The Exorcist
Ginger Snaps (it's superb! the sequel and prequel are great as well)

Loved Ginger Snaps! - not seen the others in the series so points right there.
Exorcist - meh
Scream - pfft
Ninth Gate? - Further investigation required...more pointage awarded.

Loved Ginger Snaps! - not seen the others in the series so points right there.I was about to suggest getting the box set, but it looks like it's no longer available and used ones are listed at £50-£70  If you can find one for sensible money the box set has a really nice package - one of those holograms that you tilt and the image switches from Ginger & Brigitte to a wolf's head.

Yeah - GS bit of a cult following afaik - doesn't surprise me that box sets fetch a pretty penny :)

Going back to outpost my only criticism was that the nasty Nazi Zombs were sooo hard, or pretty much imposable, to kill... made me feel sorry for the mercs.

Seen Dead Sno(w)? - again Nazi Zombies - very amusing film.

Not been scared by a film for about thirty years. Halloween is a bit too american for me. A non event.

So jaded and world weary.. poor Snakedoc. :)

Whilst I agree that the americanisation of All Hallows Eve is rather pathetic I also believe that getting a good scare is exceptionally beneficial to people.

If I wasn't at a comedy gig tonight you can be sure I'd have a few mates round, we'd break out the pencils and dice for a little dungeon bash (with extra ghosts and ghoulies) then head out to the garden for some strong liquor and spooky stories.

You need an imagination to be scared, as Wayneo alluded to earlier...and a lot of people think that after a certain age that area of the brain that allows for flights of fancy goes away. Not True! It's like a muscle, if you don't use it, it suffers entropy but that doesn't mean it isn't there.

I've done ghost stores in the caves down here in front of real hard-nuts who were all crossed arms and "Yeah right.." but I've drawn them into the tale, sparked that kid inside them that used to believe in the monster in the cupboard and made them jump out of thier tattoed skins - and they've loved it!

C'mon fella don't be such a grumpy-puss... To Scare is to care ;)

Incidentally what was the film that scared you 30 years past?

Snakedoc

I am too logical to be scared by films. I get my enjoyment from them by observing usually my daughters reactions. Most scary films use well used plot devices to try to make the watcher "jump". This is no more intelligent than shouting "boo!" at someone. For me the best horror is implied as you say, the imagination is more powerful.

Absolutely No Sarcasm implied.... I genuinely want you to give yourself a custard cream/hob-*** or Taxi (if you think you really deserve a Taxi)

I'm that kind of guy.

:D

Dara o'Briain was fab...I'm drunk and I don't think I'll make it through a whole film...But many thankings for your suggestions gang - hope you all had a groovy Halloween :thumb:
