View Full Version : Change default Installation path
Hey All,
Actually spending time setting up my gaming/rendering rig now as I'll be using it a lot more now I'm teaching myself Solidworks 2010.
I've got a 40GB SSD that currently only has 1 Steam game, the OS (obviously) and Office 2010. Now what I want to do is change the location of the 'Program Files' to my 750GB Samsung F3 HDD. How would I go about doing this if it's at all possible?
My OS is Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
Should be a key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion called ProgramFilesDir
I believe what you are saying is correct however as I'm using 64 bit will that not work?
Try it and see? :p there might be 2 keys in there, one for 32 bit programs and one for 64 bit programs.
Just read an article saying if I do try it I will most likely stop the current programs installed from working correctly.
Guess its the manual method then! Thanks for help though Gav.

Yea I had that problem. That nothing would work. But I re-edited all the other things over like user profile downloads music... You get the picture

Remember you don't have to have everything perfect, if something's going to take a hell of a hassle or risk to do just stick with what you got, it'll only take a few more clicks :).
I remember trying to uninstall Windows Media Player 12 and installing Windows Media Player 11 instead on my Windows 7 machine, when I manually uninstalled WMP12 the WMP11 installer still thought WMP12 was installed so it never let me install the downgraded version, I spent ages trying to make it not think it was installed and when I finally did WMP11 just refused to run so I decided to reinstall WMP12 and now that refused to run to so I ended up with two corrupt media players which never worked, I had to system restore to get everything back to normal and now I carry on using WMP12.
I got nothing out of attempted to do that and I lost 4 hours of my life :(.
