View Full Version : Norton Internet Security 2011 - background scanning...

Hey guys,
If any of you know how to turn this freaking annoying task off... please let me know. I've turned it off in the settings tab but it's still scanning in the background and slowing down the system.
If you have anything for me to try, please let me know. It's killing off my rendering of our home videos (dads project) as the HDD is being thrashed (even though it's not in idle!) by NIS.
Thanks in advanced.
TMDD.
Un-install and stop going on dodgy sites :).
Don't think you can disable it, it will always background scan I think, could just un-install it and then re-install it once rendering is finished.

That isn't really an option considering there are over 20 movies to go through which won't be done one after another.
I just want to disable it. My dad doesn't go on any dodgy sites. He only visits BBC, Yahoo and does general browsing.
I'm starting to think that I should've stuck with Kaspersky.
Just for the record, so we know the specs of the machine...
Q6600 @3.2, 2GB of RAM and it's running XP. I think that's about all you need to know about the machine.
Close it in task manager while you are working on this and then unistall it afterwards and get MS security.

Mhmm that is an option but I don't know whether it's worth ditching it considering we did pay for the subscription.

Ask them for a refund as it is not to your satisfaction and you will be taking your business elsewhere.

Mhmm I guess I could try that although I bought it from PCWorld. (Yeah. Shoot me now!) They were the only company who stocked the 3 user license.
They were the only company who stocked the 3 user license.
Probably because they sell Norton with everything - including Norton .
Get rid mate it's called Norton.
I'd say un-install norton and get Kaspersky internet security, the oem version can be found for £14. Aria had it but it says discontinued.

Oh good. Someone else who likes MS security.
I have free access to one of those industry strength packages (Sophos) that does not seem to be as heavy handed as the usual junk. But I have moved over to MS security on my main PC.
Used with careful computing habits, and a router with a firewall, it seems to me to be good for people who don't do insane things. Like opening suspect attachments.
Anyone using at and been bitten by anything nasty?
In this case, it would be a good alternative.

Ahh, another Norton bashing thread. The fact is, half of you won't have tried it ever, and most of you haven't tried the '10 engine. It's much improved from the days that it'd max out RAM.

I think it goes " Norton for people who don't know any better"
you obviously know better so why ?
Norton won't allow you to close it totally in case you're an infection trying to disable the antivirus
the only other option I can think of is what everyone already said remove the sucker

haha good joke- get avira, or MSE, both great (i prefer avira) and then a good firewall like comodo or outpost or whatever, very light on system and do a far better job than norton, norton is for idiots.

I agree, get Kaspersky. The Kaspersky licences can be used in any version of the product, just get KIS 2009 3 user licence cheap somewhere, download the 2011 trial from the official site, use your 2009 licence to activate. I just did that recently, 3 licences for under £15!

Norton is for Idiots? Have you even used it then?
If you had any sense you'd realise that Windows Firewall is more than fine.
the 2010 engine was a MASSIVE improvement over 09/08/07 , 06 was good :D
Norton provides the best protection but at a huge cost. There should be some presets somewhere where you can set it to performance or something like that, it's different in every version.

how do you know norton provides the best protection? and aaron_H norton is for idiots because people who dont need it spend unnecassary money on it when they could just get a free AV.
and as for widnows firewall, its not fine, because its not as light on system as some other free firewalls, and doesnt have any good security, like for example it never asks if a program to make changes to a certian file etc, and i never said its bad anyway.

How do you know that Norton doesn't? You didn't say Norton was poor value for money, you said it's for idiots.
like for example it never asks if a program to make changes to a certian file I wouldn't like a pop up everytime this happens, Windows deals with it for me.
Do you want a pop up everytime a program opens too?
Keeps my dad at bay, the only program thats kept his pc virsu free is norton, he is a die hard norton fan and i can see why, i've tried Panda, AVG, Avast etc but in comparison, there is no comparison. :D
It just uses up way too much CPU for what it is.
TheMadDutchDude
29-10-10, 23:26
Well it isn't using much of my CPU. It's just thrashing the HDD if I leave the mouse sitting still for more than five minutes.
AmdOverclocker, I'm sorry but if you think I'm an idiot for choosing Norton, based on reviews I saw where it consistently topped Kaspersky... Well I don't think I need to carry on here.
