Is it not saying the update is important, opposed to the program itself.

Lol, didn't have that when I formatted yesterday.

Also, install SP1 beta (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/evalcenter/ff183870.aspx) ftw.

Beta updates....
Have been playing with it since the day it was available. Never had an issue - TBH there's almost no changes in SP1 for 7 (whereas there are some for Server '08 R2), it's effectively just a collective rollup of all the updates since RTM.

Do you have an older version of MSN? Perhaps there are security issues if so.

Simply read the rules. This explains what is and what is not acceptable.

http://forums.aria.co.uk/faq.php

If you don't like these rules then there is nothing keeping you here.

Not really anything else mate other than all the Windows updates from the last year :P there are a few things which are new in SP1 for Server R2 though to do with Remote Desktop but otherwise that's about it (almost nothing really for Win7) - just saves a bit of time if you reinstall regularly basically...

That puzzled me too yesterday when I put my wife's laptop through its weekly update check.

I didn't recall every putting that stuff on the laptop.

Looking at the history of updates on my other PCs, that one isn't even there.

It is also odd that they attach more importance to this than they do to security updates.

That works but misses the original point.

I don't know about SeanBond, who started this off, but I don't turn things off unless I know why I am doing it.

Lots of smart answers, and 'helpful' suggestions, but as yet no one seems to have an answer to the original point.

Why did this one show up as an essential update?

Probably down to something that we both had on the PCs that threw it at us, but what?

Read twice before you reply, says to self.

Yes.

But why is the update important?

See other stuff.

i wouldnt install it! its microsoft trying to change all your search defaults to bing in the guise of an update to something that is useful.. its just bloatware..

That may be an unintended consequence, or failure to read the prompts properly, but it is not the aim of Windows Live Essentials 2011 (http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials?os=other).

It bundles together the sort of stuff that prompt people to moan when Microsoft includes these things in the operating system itself. The sort of thing that the EU beats them around the head with.

Do i detect some sort of problem or sarcasm here ? Considering I had the first response (relative too the info given in the OP) which i also think was fair, whats with the quote ?

Basically it's not important, it's just Microsoft trying to get everyone to upgrade. I don't know anyone that likes the new 2011 Live.

R2 is the windows 7 server correct? No other windows' server supports w7?

NickCPC
26-10-10, 10:44
2008 R2 is the server equivalent of 7, yes - but the original Server 2008 and afaik 2003 will also talk to 7 just fine. You just don't get all the features that R2 brings when also communicating with 7.

Its slow, resource hungry and takes a fair bit of disk space!

I've gone back to my old version of MSN and ignore the windows update icon telling me i need to update...

Loads of people say it's crap which is why I'm not upgrading to it. I use 2009 build 14. :)

I have a network running Server2008 (not R2) and using all Win7 clients. Works with no problems at all.

Another guy I know has just swapped his network of over 500 computers to Win7, and is still running server 2003 and its going ok! :)

I assume he is not using roaming profiles then? I had a total nightmare getting Seven to login to 2003. In the end I gave up and setup local profiles.

Aaron
26-10-10, 11:32
I'm using roaming profiles on "non r2" and he is also using roaming.

I've found that the problems come when you try and mix roaming profiles on clients running XP and 7, because they use a different folder structure.. In that case, I found the user will either be given a temporary logon, not log on properly at all due to crucial files being stored in different locations for each OS, or they will see one set of documents when they log intp XP and another set when they log into a 7 client..

I also found that you got different results depending if the user logged into an XP or 7 machine as their very first logon..

Switch the whole load over to Win7, and forget about XP, and it works fine. Or it has for me anyway

Snakedoc
26-10-10, 11:36
Well, it's someone else's problem now lol. Yes it was a mix of XP, Vista and W7. Oddly apart from terrible boot/shutdown times, the Vista machines were less hassle.

Aaron
26-10-10, 11:42
Yeah, I've had that. I'm currently running a network which is 90% 7Pro and a few Vista Business laptops mixed in. No problems at all with any of them now, as they all use the same folder structure.

I also had the logon/shutdown times thing with the Vista machines. I eventually found it was a specific service that was causing the startup problems (literally a 5 minute wait before the logon screen) and the shutdown was caused by roaming profiles trying to sync everything that it had already sync'd.. Even slower over wireless! Quick change of a few settings in Group Policy and it worked as well as the 7 machines :)
