View Full Version : Windows 7 Snap to

On my windows 7 machine when I open My Computer it opens as a window (as you'd expect lol), I then snap it to one or other of the sides of the screen. To move files around I then open another My Computer window and snap it to the other side.

Before I rebuilt my PC and reinstalled onto the SSD, when I opened My Computer the first would open snapped to the left and the second would open snapped to the right.

Now I have no idea how I made that happen and cant make it do it on the new build (I have tried the usual CTRL+close to no avail).

Anyone know how I can achieve this? (hopefully this makes sense).

Cheers

It makes sense although I think your last install was an aberration.

Have you tried doing the above opening, and the immediately closing the two windows ... Just a thought.

Not the answer to your question, but I perform operations like that with an Explorer replacement that shows two file trees in the same window. Then you just drag and drop between them.

Directory Opus from GP Software (http://www.gpsoft.com.au/index.html). Not cheap or easy to learn. but that is because it is so configurable and powerful that can replace any number of other utilities.

Great for messing around with files.

I think if you snap the first window, open the second then maximize it that might snap to the other side. Should stay until you 'restore' the window. Can't be certain as I'm not at my pc.

Edit: just tried it and didn't work. I'm sure there is an option to remember window position or similar :'(

Open both windows, right-click the taskbar, select "Show windows side by side"

I find that it is quicker to use the Winkey+Left (or Right) key strokes to move and dock windows in Win 7. But I have dual monitors, which makes a difference.

Sorry for the lack of replies guys I've been playing with my new Desire HD :)

Ive tried all I can think of to make it happen again, but with no luck, so for now I have just manually changed the size of the window to make it exactly half size, it then stays like this when I close it. Not perfect but better for know.

So winkey + left/right didn't work?? Are you sure the window you wanted to snap had focus?

It works, but i still have to do it each time I open the window, my botch method, means the window always opens in the right place (for the first window at least).

Not ideal, but its a better setup than before.

Ah right, sorry - I get you now. As Snake says, think it was an erratum previously :P

It sounds as if it's a common fault of Windows 7. There is a small program that adds this functionallity.

You can find it here (http://www.sevenforums.com/customization/40916-shellfolderfix-manage-folder-window-positions-size.html#post396744)

I hope this helps. Not sure why your previous install did it, unless you had already installed some sort of window manager?
