View Full Version : So just who the hell are you?
Having had a quick look through the threads, I can't see a who are you type thread? I reckon it'd be nice to find out a little more about the people that come here often. What do you do? where do you live exactly? What things are you into, except computers, obviously :)
I guess to get the ball rolling, my real name is, shudders, Nigel. I've lived on the Isle of Man for nearly 4 years now, but I originally come from Cheshire, and more precisely, Sandbach. Mmmm the Isle of Man, a haven for tax dodgers, fast drivers and increased postal charges (sorry had to get that is ;)).
I moved over here for a women when I was 19, stupid mistake! Now I'm 23, and still work for the same life insurance company, and it's VERY boring. Typical office admin job.
I'm hoping to move back to the mainland around November though, and I honestly can't wait! I'm hoping to land a job at a new company my dad is setting up with some associates, and my girlfriend and I are hopefully going to be buying a house.
I spend most of my time on my computer, or as much time as I can get away with without my other half shouting at me. \"You never spend time with me\", or \"you'll make yourself ill on the computer all the time\". I can build a PC, trouble shoot them, build websites, all that kind of thing.
I'm also a keen movie fan. I love watching films, especially at the cinema, another reason i miss England. I'll watch most things, but I prefer something funny, or with good action, or scary, or a good thriller. I'm also a fairly keen cyclist, however my bike is currently in pieces on the floor of the old flat I lived in! I've also started learning to play the guitar!
Anyway, that's me. Can't wait to see what everyone else has to say, especially Lucy!

Alright then...
My real name is Brian McGillivray... i live in the far far north of Scotland... in the most northernly town on the british mainland, Thurso, situated at the mouth of a river that passes through a small valley opening up into an almost crescent shaped bay. (originally a Viking settlement \"thor sa\" which translates to Thors Bay.) [Link to Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=thurso+scotland&ie=UTF8&ll=58.594024,-3.522835&spn=0.07836,0.321007&om=1)]
Ive lived here all my life, though i have travelled elsewhere. I have a love/hate relationship with computers... i work with them as a Web Developer for a local IT firm, and im quite often at one at home... but i get really frustrated with them, something always goes wrong... i can build a computer, install things, and do some basic troubleshooting... but it does my head in having to fix things... if i could live without computers i would, but they are too large a part of things these days...
Apart from computers, im fond of Swords, Knives and Airsoft BB Guns, although i dont have any of my own at the moment, having sold what i did have... though i intend to increase my collection when ive got the money to spare...
I consider myself to be average looking, though people have stated that i look like Elijah Wood... infact, when the the LOTR movies first came out... i had people saying i was a spitting image of Frodo when i was leaving the Cinema...
I like to draw and such, though im not that great... im a fan of pen & paper roleplaying games... having participating in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, Dungeons & Dragons and other D20 systems, and more recently the World of Darkness series of games (Vampire: the Requiem etc) with a group of friends... ive also been the storyteller/dungeonmaster on many occasions, directing the storyline/plot/etc in long-running games... which i do in a very improvised manner...
Anyway... thats all i can think of to say at the moment... id better get back to work :P
My name is Greg and I'm 19. I'm about 5'8\"-5'9\" without my shoes on. Currently doing nothing due to have a year off from life, but should be doing more college in September. I live in South Birmingham but I was born in Worcester. My favourite time of the year is Autumn.
My interests include using and maintaining my computer, music composition influenced by video game music and 80's rock/metal, I watch quite a lot of movies with my preference being 80's-90's films and I aim to be a proficient cook. My main instrument is the keyboard, been playing 7 or 8 years and I got myself an electric a year and a half ago (see avatar). My favourite bands include - but not limited to - Iron Maiden, Journey, Ayumi Hamasaki, Rush, Dokken, Queensryche, Van Halen. I'm pretty open minded and like a wide range of music, especially that dance version of the American Beauty song. That is fantastic.
I watch a lot ot TV such as Lost, Neighbours/Home&Away, Medium and car programs. I love Rally motorsport. Hopefully I'll get round to being in the crowd at the 2007 British event. I like photography and natural landscape beauty but sadly don't have a digital camera to enjoy that to the full (Aria get those Kodak C330's in that I asked for...please!). I am an adept artist but haven't done any artwork since 6th Form purely because of it exhausting me and being tedious. Very tempted to do a large portrait of Master Chief though! Hehe
Top video games include:
Halo series
Retro Sonic and Sonic Adventure series
Jade Empire
Shenmue series
Richard Burns Rally

I'm fond of animals and don't like to see or hear about animal cruelty. Not keen on cats because of the claws and their nasty habit of trying to kill the little hedgehog that lives in my garden and the cat sh*t.
I'd like to go to Japan, or should I say mainly rural Japan, Canada and New Zealand. Anywhere else is too hot. In fact travelling would be one of my favourite things to do when I'm settled in a career and can support myself but I'd go with a friend or girlfriend because I don't fancy being stuck somewhere on my own with a flat tyre and caught with my pants down in the middle of a forest where I can't speak the native language...
That's all I can think of right now.
Ahh I see, it's going like that is it? Well in that case!

Right here goes, my name is actually Mark and i was born and bred in Northamptonshire (not that much further north fom you PP  ) and i am single through choice, i was engaged but we don't like to talk about that  . I am probably a bit older than most on here being 30(ish) but hey i am young at heart and making up for lost time.
When im not stuck in front of my pc visiting the 2 or 3 forums i regulalry use or playing games i am usually watching dvds (horror, thrillers and sci fi are usually the films of choice) watching sport on tv footy or cricket depending on the time of year or occasionally watching \"normal\" tv progs Lost being the favourite atm. Weekends i am usually out with a few mates playing pool or watching local bands stuff like that.
With regard to pc's well i am no expert by any stretch of the imagination but i have built various pcs for myself and quite a few for friends / family / work collegues. The only real thing that stumps me is networking i can usually muddle my way through pretty much everything else eventually. In my spare time (usually sundays and the occasional week day evening) i review pc hardware as a \"hobby\" which i enjoy as quite often i get to try out new hardware before it hits the streets or very soon after. :D
To pay for this i work as an electronics enginner for acompany that makes equipment for radio stations / tv recording studios and any other application that needs audio distribution equipment.
Anyway thats a brief history of me :P
Well everyone, my name is Alex and im 18 Years Old. Im from Ipswich.
I work for a small company in Felixstowe called, MLITC. Been working here now for around 20months, and i love it.

I was addicted to a game called Ishar.

My fave Films are Halloween Trilogy, Warriors, DodgeBall 8)
My fave TV Shows are Bottom, Men Behaving Badly, Orrible, Young Ones
My claim to fame is meeting David Beckham and Victoria Beckham, when i was working as a Kitchen Porter at Portman Road (Ipswich Town Football Club Stadium)
I was a right Terror at school
Also currently trying to quit smoking, as my girlfriend bought me an Inhaltor, Pills, Patches and Gum. So fingers crossed!!

Ive done a few things in life, as far as education, employment go, from working in an old folks home, Building work, sales, painting and decorating, real estate, eventually got fed up and got my a.s.s in college, did graphic design, art and design, degree in fine art, teaching qualification, absolutely despised technology at that point but spent a large portion of my last years student loan on a pc then got into computers as a means of scanning photo's of my art work for gallery catologues, then found music composition and all the knob twiddling soft synths, rebirth etc spent a couple of years knocking a few albums up, sending em to loads of labels under the Band name Mighty Jah Freakshow, didnt do much, claim to fame was an entry on a chillout compilation album and a couple of white labeLs, Ill stick some tracks up later so you can have a laugh.
Mighty's Music >> http://www.esnips.com/web/Mightys-Music
Ended up where I am now, work for UK Online (yep Tony Blairs outfit), wev'e now ditched the concept and gone our seperate ways,(We knew learn direct would fail big time), now Im an IT manager, network admin, and teach ECDL, Digital imaging and multimedia, Ive got a cracking job,I pretty much decide whats gonna happen, spend loads of the bosses cash, but get results and hopfully people get jobs in the it industry as a bonus.
I do a normal 9-5...erm and then its me other job, evenings and weekends yep like a few on here I buy sell and repair PC's for people, bit of web design, often thought of aquiring premises, but then thought nah...to many pc shops round here, Incuding the big bullies of the pc market, so I just stick to my business card and poster approach, I cant grumble, as Im often inundated with clients,as Im cheaper than all the big boys(take that as you want to).
Super Mighty in freefall, in a whacky attempt to save the planet..
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j302/Mightyjah/MightyJump.jpg
I consider myself to be quite sociable, and always seem to be the culprit of any wise cracking, I love a good chuckle, with friends, drink smoke and swear like a trooper(not proud)dont watch much telly, like the odd film, Massive LFC Fan, like gaming, graphics n techy stuff, I have a very full life what with my main 2 jobs, the missus and kids, dogs n guineas, so I also like to play hard, with the lads, love music, going to gigs, pubs, larkin around with me mates etc, like many people in the IT industry, from Monday to friday + evenings Ive got my head on all things techy and exams, teaching etc, then have a good blow out, saturday night.
Known to give trees hugs, which makes perfect sense to me, having had a tft in my face, most of the week.
Thats all from me...!....for now...lol.
Greets and nice knowin ya...Mighty...

My name is Jon, I could be amongst the older people here (33) I'm from Salford which isn't a million miles away from Aria  and I'm a Man City fan (waits for the abuse) I'm a qualified electrician
My first computer (if it can be called that lol) was a good old Spectrum 48k which got upgraded to a Spectrum 128 (without the tape deck on the side) that lasted a while..(up until about 3 years ago). First PC was a P75 with 8meg memory and 1gig drive, which I thought was good until i found out Quake wouldn't run because it needed 8 meg minimum to run (didn't know I had on board graphics card which used 1meg) so had to go and buy another 8meg stick which cost about £60 at the time..ever since then I have just upgraded parts all the way upto the *current* setup
P4 2.8 (Northwood) @ 3.6 (air-cooled)
160gig WD Caviar SE 8meg cache
2 gig Hynix pc3200
6600 GT Vid card

as well as usual burners and fans :)
Most of my time online is either shopping here..Ebay..or playing America's Army, BF2, Toca 3 or Live For Speed online

my names David, friends all call me Dai and im too damn lazy to write anything, so in brief:
studying software engineering at uni
currently workin on an assembly line (for £400 a week mind)
dont find time 2 drink (irregular 12 hour shifts)
find plenty of time 2 smoke (no weed thanks, been there)
My Names Matt Jones, im 18 and enjoy pretty much all things computers. I am currently studying Comptia A+ at college, just my software exam to complete and then i need to find a proper job. I currently work at currys, its ok, would prefer a better job, something a bit more challenging with alot more potential, rather than just being sales staff. I enjoy modding my new case is rather nice, clear side panel 3X blue LED fans, Red sound activated tube light, red lazer LED and 2x blue bubble tubes on the front of my case. i love lights! (and magnets, it is the best way to hold anything above the ground, probably not something to expensive like an antique vase or a Ferrari, hmm, needs more planning, think properly matt!) As you can probably tell i am very random, but down to earth at the same time. I love a laugh and a joke and have a very sarcastic manner. Am rather flamboyant, to a certain degree. I have a g/f of 3 years who \"loves\" my geeky ways, well, ya know. Her idea of a good time isnt walking round a computer fair, but she still is enthusiastic about it! :)
I would love to be a computer technician ( welcome to job offers, :), he he)
anyhoo thats about me!

I've got one. Not sure whether to give the link though... I mean, it's pretty boring.
So pleased to know I'm not the only 30 yr old on here, trying to keep up with you youngin's... married with kid takes the spare time away, and I've been threatened with the 'you're not building another pc for anyone!' line already!
Aria customer for I suppose 7yrs, and this forum is a great addition, always valued the responses on the product comments section, but this is better!
Ex-primary teacher, grew up in Lowestoft, but escaped as soon as possible to the midlands. Not much to say really, above mentioned child and wife means the days of cinema, pub, exercise, PC gaming has seriously gone down hill (be warned!!!)
Good thread, nice to read about you all,
John (if you hadn't guessed already!)
Well here we go :)
My names Chris 8) currently 19 years old :P but turning 20 on 21st august

Go to gym monday-thursday at 8.45pm till 10.30pm with a friend who is dedicated so keeps me going aswell :) otherwise would stay in house with 8 cans of fosters :D

Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen...
Ok, I'm Barry, aged 25 from Aberdeen, Scotland.
I studied Computing-Internet and Multimedia at uni, and now work for the NHS, dealing with Network issues and in particular Video conferencing and VOIP technologies.
Sounds very exciting doesn't it!!! In my spare time I am inundated with technical problems from people, and I make a few quid every month advising and buying for people. I live above a pub, where my dad has been drinking for the last 30 years...and i'm constantly getting a phonecall from my dad saying someone is 'thinking of buying a new computer' or 'their mail isn't working properly'...
My wireless connection works in the pub too, so I nip down occasionally and have to give demonstrations!!!
Luckily I have no children as of yet, so can still afford to buy decent PC parts, but the girlfriend is moving in with me next month, so it wont be long before i'm relegated to the spare room with my monitor under one arm and pc under the other...
She will change her mind when I stop getting torrents for her though
I'm so glad of Aria because the local Tech shops all compete with the big chains, and nobody bothers to try and sell at a cheaper price... for example, an Athlon 64 X2 4200 is £329ish in Aberdeen, almost £200 more expensive than Aria!!!
It's one of those markets no-one questions up here, they just pay the price (quite literally!) I wouldn't like to go in to sales though, although it's quite obvious I don't shut up and would be good at it
I think my post seems to be lacking in smileys, so here's a few to get me back up there...
  :!:
Oh, and Lucy, if you just read my previous post, I will easily dump my girlfriend for you...

I'm not being all that serious ;)
Perhaps I said too much :P

:D
how is the Lite-on, did you manage to get it back after your Parents knicked it ?
I never managed to get it back, but they did take me out for a meal at the weekend. But now all I get is...'with that divvy thingy (DivX) you can fit five films on a dvd right?'....then I get 'right, the first five films we want are...'
It's going to be constant asking now! And I noticed a few of my blank DVD's were being looked at the other day with ...'are these the ones we should use in our DVD player..?'
My father, being the type that reads every instruction book cover to cover then proclaims to be an expert, knows very well that 'those' are the disks he requires. So I point him in the direction of where to get them
Hey!
I'm Michelle you can call me Shelly :P
I'm 15 and today my science, maths and r.e grades came out but i'm not gunna get them, who wants to spoil the summer! when i go back in 2 weeks :(
I'll be in year 11, Yay!
I'm from Waterloo in Liverpool so it's a preety small town and has a wide range of chavs avalible for poking.
I think i'm like marmite you either love me or hate but or put up with becuase i won't stop talking to you :P
I'm a total sims addict and a download junkie, but hey i've made loads of friends of it!
I love going to gigs and i adore Panic! at the disco [if ya ever heard them] I like indie, rock and a bit of punk music but i'll also go for dance too :P
Umm yer, i'm me and just me so Heylo!! :D
*Don't be scared i only poke*

Just finished a HNC in Computing and currently workin towards my MCSE!
Been into computers for a good few years now, really got into the server side of things in the past 18 months - Active Directory, Exchange etc...

Hello....
Seeing as ive started to post here a bit now I thought I had better say my piece and get it out the way!
Im Mark, 23 from the \"bleak south London suburb\" of Croydon - Born here and lived here the majority of my life (except a brief adjournment to Lincoln for University)
At the moment, im General Manager at an Alcohol Wholesale business, not too bad and I spose it does have its plus points ;) Up until I started working full time after Uni, I was a nightclub DJ for a number of years (started playing in clubs at 17) and was lucky enough to travel round the country and play in some big clubs. Also used to host a radio show up in Lincoln when I was up there!
I also produce some music, its not very good but I enjoy doing it when I have some spare time. I have been into computers ever since my mum and dad bought a tulip computer for their home office - It had one floppy to read data and one floppy to store data - no hard drive! Got addicted to PGA golf on that and the rest, as they say, is history.
I actually studied 'Games Computing' at university, and left after 2 years with a diploma in it. Was a good course if not a bit too specialised for me, my programming was never that good - I just wanted to play the games! ;)
Before this gets too long ill just say i like football, going to the gym, swimming, scuba diving, going out and having a good laugh with mates (involving drinking preferably!) and such nonsense.
And now I think ive bored myself :)
Hi, my real name is Brian (dont ask where the user name came along, its been there since the early days of the net) I am 21 years old, I live in Basingstoke and work in Leatherhead, technical support.
I love anything technical (as well as my girlfriend, even though she doesnt have any wires or chips or anything that!) and I love modding/overclocking etc and more or less any kind of projects on computers, especially ones that are different!

You never know until you try...
Well seeing as all you 'locals' are banging on so much about getting
to know the newbies I thought I'd better say my bit.
Actually I'm looking for the 'oldest newbie of 2006' award - at 53 do
I stand a chance??
I live in \"God's waiting room\" - Sussex by the Sea where the average
age must be over 80 so even I can feel young.
Have worked with computers since the late 1970's and still do, currently
on military training systems and flight simulators.
Mainly contract work so have been around a few places, spent a number of
years in the working US as well.
I build & upgrade my own systems - that's why I'm here.
That's all there is time for as lunch is over now and it's time to get back on my head.....

I run 2 mail order businesses, one selling rubber ducks (yes - you read it right!!!!) and the other selling all manner of stuff to metalheads, goths etc. I also run a heavy metal/hard rock webzine and forum: www.HeadBang.co.uk
Heavy metal's my big passion and you'll find me on a number of different metal forums (under several different names!!!). I do lots of gigs and festivals and I'm actively involved in arranging live gigs.
I'm not into gaming as such but I fly all kinds of vintage virtual aircraft about, in FS Professional.

Live in Bristol, UK. Work in Bath.
I'm an IT Business Analyst.
I'm also a professional pyrotechnician - I fit work around my day job, but get to have lots of fun blowing stuff up.
Have been a computer user since I was six (Acorn Electron).
My first laptop was 1993, my last was 1996 when I decided they just weren't rugged enough, although I'm now tempted back by Panasonic's Toughbook range - armour plated laptops that will withstand a near miss from a mortar.
(Lucy - any chance of getting some of those in?)
Everything I use in the field must be really tough, so for now, I rely on my amd dual core desktop, a Palm TX in an armour case and a ruggedised mobile phone, along with one of the coolest pieces of kit ever made - a traser (the watch they give the SAS and SBS, contains tritium).
I drive a Toyota Corolla, which no matter how hard I try (it's been through rivers and down mountains) I just can't break. Next car probably won't be a Corolla but will certainly be Toyota, which I love. Might go for a Taliwagon next although without the .50Cal bipod mounted machine gun!
mr-tom
Hi peeps, I'm Scott, 34, introduced to my first computer (a Vic-20) when I was 8 and haven't looked back since :)
I'm in sunny Coventry (lol) and have been for like, ever. I have a dog and a cat and a long-suffering partner, bless her :D I'm just about to start a Degree in Information Technology and Computing, would have done it years ago but back when I was at school it was crap and therefore I didn't really bother with it (wish I did now of course). So I'm playing catchup while doing my regular job :)
When not programming I like to experiment with my other passion, photography. My other half kindly got me a much needed tripod for my new camera for my birthday this week and I've been out giving it a whirl - I'm like a kid in a candy shop ;)
I Admin a forum dealing with quite a variety of topics in my other spare time, often testing out my programming there.
Hopefully I'll get to know you guys and girls better in the coming months! :)
Cheers, Robin - appreciated. :)
