Hey!

I cant decide whether its worth spending an extra £40-£50 on a 22" monitor, if i baught the 19" i would be able to buy slightly better components for my box and the 22" is stretching my budget massively!

Dimensions (roughly viewable display)

19" - 25cm Height, 41cm Width
22" - 30cm Height, 47cm Width

is it worth the extra?

Callum

How much are they and which ones? and what components are you buying so we can recommend buying a cheaper monitor and a better cpu or something...

im looking at the 19" Hanton H310 LCD Monitor - Black - #28993 £103
and the cibox 22" monitor £150

Parts List:

Intel Pentium Dual Core E2140 1.6GHz (Retail 775) (to be OC'd)
Thermaltake Soprano - Black, Window Side Panel
LG GSA-H66NBAL 20x DVDRW/RAM Black - SATA
OCZ Vanquisher CPU Cooler
nVidia GeForce 8400GS 256MB PCI-E
250Gb Western Digital Caviar SE SATA 8MB
Patriot 2GB PC2-5300 Extreme Performance (2x1GB)
Asus P5ND2-SE Intel LGA 775 nForce 570
TP-Link 108M Wireless PCI Adaptor
Logitech Cordless Desktop EX 110
OCZ 500W StealthXstream Power Supply

Those parts come to £325

and i didnt really want to go above £450 including a monitor

It's only £25 over, and you'll see a good imporovement, i take it you will be gaming?

Bare in mind that when you use a 22" monitor you will need to change the resolution in your games, make sure that your games can run smoothly at that resolution.

no i dont game that much but i will be using the monitor to watch dvd's etc from 7feet away

PeterStoba

22" then, if you can afford, it has a better response time

indeed, 22" > 19"

But please dont get the cibox one!

get this one

or

These ASUS monitors are a little more expensive, but they have a 2ms response rate and are basically...

whats wrong with the cibox?

mac124
09-12-07, 12:02
If you aren't gaming then i would suggest the bigger monitor, i would also suggest the patriot 6400 memory, £5 more but will increase performance and will be better for overclocking (which you say you want to do).

If you want to save a few pounds go for the Akasa Zen case, not quite as "pretty" as the Soprano but still a very very good case for the price.

cleggypdc
09-12-07, 12:41
theres nothing 'wrong' with the cibox, i'm just recommending better monitors for gaming

Micky007
09-12-07, 12:47
22" all the way

CallumRogan
09-12-07, 13:50
Im gna go for 22" monitor

and ive decided to save myself £10 and go for a 160GB HD, as im not going to fill that much in a long time anyway, ill get a bigger one, when needs be! As its much cheaper to upgrade HD than monitor.

Amie
09-12-07, 13:53
Ahh! confuzzlement, i read that wrong, cheaper to upgrade HD (as in HDTV) than monitor lol, i'm used to HDD :P

CallumRogan
09-12-07, 14:37
ha sorry :P i always you HD because hard disk drive always sounds wierd to me :P!

just to check, the mobo i have chosen is good for OC'ing that processor right? as ive never OC'd before im not definately sure!

mac124
09-12-07, 16:10
Hmm i have just checked and that mobo doesn't seem to be C2D compatible....:(

I'll have look see whats what with another, hopefully similarly priced mobo.

Well i think you are going to have to up the price on the mobo a tad, the XFX is about the cheapest i can recommend that offers decent overclocking capabilities. It works out about £15 more than the one you chose so its not a buget busting change.

XFX MB-N650-IUL9 NF650i http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Motherboards/Socket+775+%28Intel%29/XFX+MB-N650-IUL9+NF650i+Ultra+Socket+775+Motherboard+?productI d=28093

CallumRogan
09-12-07, 16:45
that mobo is c2d compatible it says so on the asus and another retailers website that it is compatible, is it not a good OCing bored then or did you was your previous post based on that it wouldnt be compatible with my processor?

mac124
09-12-07, 17:09
I think you may have been looking at the wrong mobo, do a search for the EXACT mobo on asus's website and it says its only compatible with

- Socket 775 for Intel Pentium D / Pentium 4 / Celeron (same as is listed on Arias website too)

http://www.asus.com/search.aspx?searchitem=1&searchkey=p5nd2+se << check here.

CallumRogan
09-12-07, 17:12
yes it does then below it says

LGA775 Intel Core™2 Processor Ready
This motherboard supports the latest Intel® Core™2 processors in LGA775 package. With new Intel® Core™ microarchitecture technology and 1066 / 800 MHz FSB, Intel® Core™2 processor is one of the most powerful and energy efficient CPU in the world.

mac124

Have you got a link? Because nowhere under the specs on Asus's website can i see anything along those lines.

CallumRogan
09-12-07, 17:21
http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=479&l4=0&model=1497&modelmenu=1

it says there, also if it turns out this isnt a good choice, how about this one

Asus P5KPL-VM, iG31 LGA775 Core2 Quad / Extreme / Core2 Duo (https://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Motherboards/Socket+775+(Intel)/Asus+P5KPL-VM%2C+iG31+LGA775+Core2+Quad+%2F+Extreme+%2F+Core2 +Duo+?productId=28610)

PeterStoba
09-12-07, 17:28
I have the P5KPL-VM, looks good, supports quad and core 2 duo, and the new Penryn range, PCI-e x16, SATA, i'd go with that

mac124
09-12-07, 17:28
The p5k would certainly be more future proof than the p5nd as it supports 1333 cpu's. Still not 100% sure if the original mobo supports c2d, one page says it does another doesn't list C"D???

The XFX would still be better than the p5k though for overclocking as micro axt mobo's aren't usually that good where overclocking is concerned.

CallumRogan
09-12-07, 17:33
hmm, so the the i cant really spend any more than £45 on the mobo, as long as it supports the items that are in post #2 and i can OC (id like to get the e2140 to around 2.4Ghz?) on it, i dnt really care how future proof it is, so any ideas

PeterStoba
09-12-07, 17:33
P5KPL-VM

CallumRogan
09-12-07, 17:37
Peter, mac said it woudnt be good for OCing

PeterStoba
09-12-07, 17:46
Nobody mentioned that to me when i asked for advice :|

CallumRogan
09-12-07, 17:48
well have you tried OC'ing on it?

PeterStoba
09-12-07, 17:52
Not built the system yet, but i can't see how the mobo wouldn't allow you to overclock, all you need to do it edit FSB and voltages?

CallumRogan
09-12-07, 17:54
Well ive never OC'd before so i dont actually know what to do, im just going on what people have told me

mac124
09-12-07, 19:28
The micro atx boards tend to be poorer overclockers than their full size counter parts there are 1 or 2 that are almost as good BUT they are way out of your price range.

I have had a look around and i can't find a decent review of the Asus P5KPL-VM anywhere as it is still a relatively new board.

The XFX is only a few pounds more i would SERIOUSLY consider that if i were you as i KNOW it is a decent overclocker. http://www.bjorn3d.com/read.php?cID=1106 review here.

PeterStoba
09-12-07, 19:55
Does that fit in a standard case, mac?

mac124
09-12-07, 20:02
The XFX? yes its a standard ATX size. So if your case takes ATX mobo's it will fit perfectly.

Callum if your not gaming there really is no point OC'ing. The spec your looking at will more than easily play a DVD and browse net, photo editing etc at stock speeds. 8)
