Hi,
Please can you help an old man out,got a new 500gb Seagate Barracuda IDE I6 from Aria,

In the Bios it shows 500GB,but when I put WinXP Pro, on it only shows 127 GB

My MB is a Abit TH7 2 Raid

CPU is 1.9 GHz INTEL

1.0 GB of Ram

What do you think I've done.

Many thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum, you must have a really old MotherBoard as i dont see anyone selling this and Abit dont even have the specs on the site. What CPU do you have? i know its an Intel but an Intel what?

Also go to Start, My Computer, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Managment, Expand Storage and click Disk Managment and look at the C drive and tell me what it says the Capacity is.

Abit do list it Micky, http://www.abit.com.tw/page/uk/motherboard/motherboard_detail.php?pMODEL_NAME=TH7II-RAID&fMTYPE=Socket+478

Just it's in the archives as it's 5years old

Have you used the same slot as the old one was in, same cable, and is the old one still in?

Hmmm when you installed XP and it asked you to create a partition did you change the value of the hard drive of how much space to use?

If i was you i would install XP again. Also have you tried the hard drive in any other computers that already have XP on? if not, stick it in a pc as a slave and see what size it shows, if it shows 160Gb or around 130GB then maybe aria have sent you the wrong one and instead sent you (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Hard+Drives/IDE/160GB+Seagate+Barracuda+IDE+8MB+?productId=26083)

If it shows 500GB (average 490GB) then it means you must have done somthing while installing XP to make it only use 130GB.

I am fairly certain older versions of xp, pre SP2 maybe, can't see hard drives over a certain size. Is your XP disk an older version perchance?

Or did i dream it??

So it was the older xp disks not seeing the full size of the drive and now it is with the newer one then, great stuff. :D

Feel free to join in with the banter, theres no need to be shy.

If you are happy updating your BIOS, that seems to be the likely fix.

Here is a link to the Abit bios page for that motherboard:
http://www2.abit.com.tw/page/uk/motherboard/motherboard_detail.php?pMODEL_NAME=TH7II-RAID&fMTYPE=Socket%20478&pPRODINFO=BIOS

In the details of the second newest bios update (dated 2003/04/11), it lists the following details:

The default year sets up to 2003.
Update HPT370 BIOS version v2.34 to support Hard Drive larger than 136GB.The RAID function is for TH7II-RAID only. This BIOS version is also for non RAID boards and HPT BIOS will be automatically disabled while RAID controller chip not detected.I believe that should fix your problem, but it'd be good to get a 2nd opinion before you do it, just to be doubley sure! :)

Just wondered if you had any luck with this? :)
