Right then boys and gals it seems a long long time since I have had to write a build log, almost difficult to remember what to do!
HayleyWOW a lass on the 3dforums came to me a little while back about building her a main rig which you will all be seeing very soon, but while her case is at the bodyshop I bring you what is actually the second rig I will be building her WOW-Storage.
Basically Hayley wanted a storage server similar to mine but also something that was pleasing to the eye rather than something thats just plain and boring.
So heres the spec list:
Fractal R3 Arctic white
Asus P7H57D-V Evo
Intel i3 530
Gskill Eco 1600mhz 4GB
5x 2TB WD Green's
64GB Kingston V+ SSD
Big thanks also go out too:
NZXT for the HALE90 650w PSU
Noctua for the NH-C12P SE14 and the 4x NF-P12 case fans
Enough of the text lets look at the pictures and the first video

Very nice Tom! Completely overspecced but as you say, it has the potential for an upgrade and is well future proofed if she wishes to turn it into a bigger server or even a gaming rig.
I too shall be keeping an eye out for more videos. :D

The i3 is perfect for a hame server tbh as is cool and very power efficient yet still has the balls to rar ect with plenty of speed. And I think she just wanted the same core componants as my server!
A bit off topic (kinda i guess)
I was thinking of making a home server. But whats the fastest way to link them? Gigabit lan is the fastest?
Fibre optic but thats expensive. :D
Gigabit lan is the obvious answer
Gonna be a sweet rig that! I do LOVE a nice bit of overkill :thumb: :D
Aye, gigabit LAN is the only way :)

its going to be a beast haha
I used a sempron in mine and unlocked a locked core I ended up with a Athlon
x2 energy efficient @2.8GHZ (i think) but idle it clocks itself down to 800Mhz
I have to get one of them cases you have :clap

That's one good looking case right there!
I'm looking to build something similar, but on the cheap lol

personally I wouldn't have used the P12 fans as case fans I would only use them for
CPU cooling
NF-S12B would have been a more silent choice IMHO

Right time for a little update, hard drives are in along with the PSU and new Noctua fans. The Motherboard is all built up ready to drop in aswell.
Ive let Hayley have the very first of the new OC3D Fan/Case badges, be more info on this for everyone else pretty soon if you all behave :p

would it not be worth moving the top 2TB drives so they are being cooled by the top fan?
tinytomlogan

They wont get that hot anyways dude tbh, Ive kept them in the bottom so the airflow isnt obstucted on the top fan.
wonderlust
16-10-10, 17:33
Well at least you can move them later on if you find a need!
How much does the door restrict air flow?
I like the internal design of the fractal cases but I would prefer not to have the door.
My Media server is currently 5 x 1TB and I have had to add a 5.25-3.25 bay (Ex and antec 1200) to fit all the drives in.
tinytomlogan
16-10-10, 17:42
Ive not had a change to test it yet. The air is designed to come in the sides so it should be fine tbh.
In my own server Ive got backplanes. I do have a small hoard of HDD and 120mm fan mounts for optical bay mounts though, I even got them all powdercoated but never used them!

Wont be selling them dude, just deciding what we are getting done and how many, this was just a tester batch. I expect Ill come up with some weird way for everyone to get hold of them ;)
Next time we need a close-up of that tattoo mate :thumb:

If you have 5 2TB drives will that only be 5TB of storage if you run them in RAID1 that i assume you will be doing for security?

Most likely Raid-5 = 8TB storage
Raid-1 would only be 4TB with a spare disk ;)
realllt smexy
ever thing just goes 2gether so well

Does raid 5 offer any data security?
RAID 5 is basically RAID 0 and RAID 1 together ... so it features the speed of MIRRORED, together with the expanse of space of CLUSTERED.
A quick and simple way of working out amount of storage is to use amount of storage on total drives - 1 drive ...
HOWEVER - I wonder what OS he's gonna use here, as in my experience when using NTFS you can only use 2TB drives as a max ... 8TB ain't gonna work ... But we'll see.
He appears to be intending to use Windows Server 2008 R2 for the build anyway, which would be my OS of choice for something like this.

RAID5 uses data striping and parity (with the parity data spread over the discs) so you do indeed get redundancy (any 1 disc can go down and have its data reconstituted) and some speed benefit.

Spo on there fella

You can do the run round and tot it all up dude, Hayley wanted something like my server but that also looked real nice. Other than a raid card she wasnt overly worried about cash.

Are these things for storing your data or are they used for data on websites etc?
To me one of these things seems to be a bit like overkill, or are they good for storing data?

You missed it about 10 times! Windows Server 2008 R2
nice video logs.
i thought about building one myself, but too much effort, case too big and too much power. so bought myself a Synology Ds410j, 8TB of hard disk in there, RAID 5 for 6GB total storage space :D
what's the performance of it like? interested in file transfer rates to and from the file server.
tinytomlogan
17-10-10, 20:11
Its not built yet but speed wont be an issue, the gigabit connection will be the limiting factor. (130MB/s ish max)
My personal system maxes my line out about 6times over :D
figure that's the case, since i only saw 1 gigabit port there.
my Ds410j can only do max of 40MB/s of read :( RAID 5 is really CPU intensive.

After a quick Wiki...
RAID5 (block-level striping with distributed parity) distributes parity along with the data and requires all drives but one to be present to operate; drive failure requires replacement, but the array is not destroyed by a single drive failure. Upon drive failure, any subsequent reads can be calculated from the distributed parity such that the drive failure is masked from the end user. The array will have data loss in the event of a second drive failure and is vulnerable until the data that was on the failed drive is rebuilt onto a replacement drive. A single drive failure in the set will result in reduced performance of the entire set until the failed drive has been replaced and rebuilt.
Sounds about right:thumb:

looks great will keep looking out for more
windows 7 can read a raid 5 but it has to change the drive type from gdp or something like that :S
You can "software" RAID most versions of windows from 2003 onwards ... BUT it's a bit of a risky (and not particularly fast) process.
I did RAID-5 with XP (reg hack to enable the 2k3 server code)... slower than a slow thing but it did work :D
Personally, if I had 5 x 2TB hard disks and was only gonna be using about 75% of it, I'd do it in JBOD, and do backups to one or two of them. This is the least risky setup, and especially remember 1 thing RAID is NOT a substitute for a backup!
JBOD has very little advantage over raid if all of the drives are the same size.
From a RISK point of view it means that all of the drives are individually available on another computer, rather than RAID 5 you need the same controller if it all goes TU ...
how does JBOD work i always wondered.
does it:
a. make disks into single large volume?
b. spread file across disks?
c. fill up disks sequentially? (what happens if a large file is in between disks)
d. you choose which disk to save? (how? and how's that any different from single volumes)

a. nope
b. nope
c. nope
d. TBH, that's why I choose it, the clue's in the name "Just a Bunch of Disks" :)
As I said, I tend to use it for large volumes as this because, if you imagine you've got 8TB of data on a RAID 5 and your controller goes up the spout ... unless you get pretty much an exact match you've lost the lot ...
Very nice build, love the white theme, looks excellent!

im sorry, still not sure i understand. what's the advantage of JBOD over each disk as a volume of its own?
eg, what if you want to save 3TB worth of data into 1 folder? how do you do that with JBSD?
I think jbromley is getting JBOD confused.
JBOD is when all of the drives are put together to create one logical volume.
EDIT: After a very quick scout, We are both correct but I fail to see the logic in jbromleys use of JBOD
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-RAID_drive_architectures#JBOD
I would normally associate the term JBOD with Concatenation... a single volume where you start filling data at disk1 and when that fills it starts saving data to disk2. Different to a stripe where data is written to all disks simultaneously.
Adv with concat is generally they're a lot easier to resize by adding more disks on the end.
wow what a coincidence! I was watching your video of the gameplay for Crysis for the GTX 460 from Gigabyte..seriously want that card now..
Anyways, this was runnig ing the background! Now i can see what a beast it is! that is one sexy motherboard...

changed my case to the R3 after seeing this thread :) ages ago
belter of a case for a server
got a £27 sempron and unlocked it to dual core
2GB ram
6TB HDD (for now)
windows home server ( like the drive extender and the fact I can duplicate only folders I need duplicated)
this is the Ghetto version on Tom logans one LOL
http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo97/sniperdude_2008/DSCF6583.jpg
Very similar looking to my home server set up Sniperdude :)
Case:............... Define R2
Cooling:............ 6 x Fractal Design 1500 RPM silent fans
Fan Controller:... Nesteq MaxZero Fan Controller (controls all 8 fans in the case)
PSU:................ Coolermaster Silent Pro M700W Modular Power Supply (might change this for a Corsair)
Motherboard:..... MSI P45 Neo3-FR
CPU:................ Q8400 Core2Quad
CPU Cooler:....... Thermalright Venomous X with 2 x Noctua NF-P12's
RAM:................ 4GB 1066 MHz Crucial Balistix
Boot drive:........ 1 x 1.5 TB Samsung F2
Storage Drives:.. 5 x 2 TB Samsung F3's
OS:.................. Windows Home Server
Above specs are overkill for a Home Server, but it does all sorts including hosting a few VM's, Video Ripping & Encoding, and serving HD media to 3 rooms in the house.
