I bought 2GB of RAM to add to the existing 2GB - same specs and all and rebooted. The result was that apps would now freeze, SiSoft Sandra reckons I've only got 2.6 gig RAM when it should be 4 gigs and I haven't got a clue as to what the problem is.

Can anyone help?

The MB is an ASUS P5N32-SLI Premium, with a Core2DUo E6600 processor.

What OS are you running? You will need a 64bit OS to use all 4Gb Ram. I believe non 64bit versions of windows will only see 3Gb, even if you have 4gb in there. Which, if Sandra is doing some funky rounding of numbers, could be why its only seeing 2.6Gb?

it could be the 64bit problem

I think you've probably hit the nail on the head - I wasn't aware of that fact! Guess I'll have to get a copy of XP 64-bit or move down to Vista.

Thanks for your help guys - that makes perfect sense.

there is no point in buying 4gb of ram unless you have a 64 bit os and even then ive heard alot of bad reviews about 64bit os due to all the software compatibility issues etc. ps when you put 4gb of ram on a 32bit system it will only recognise 2-3gb and the rest will be used for system tasks or sumthing like that, it could also be ur motherboard!

Not really true that it isn't worth upgrading to 4gb on a 32bit os, i got a big benefit from upping my memory to 4gb in my gaming pc i couldn't alt tab out before where as now i can, games tend to load faster, less drive thrashing all in all a much nicer experience, granted it doesn't use the full amount but was still worth the upgrade.

Also with 32bit OS its 3GB total memory that can be addressed, so if you have a Graphics card with 512MB for example thats gonna be deducted for your 3GB.

From memory (could be wrong) a 32bit OS should see 3GB, and anything over 3GB is addressed to other hardware, such as the Graphics card etc.

i have 4gb in winxp/vista32 ( dual boot ) both o/s report 3.50 gig ram , my gfx card has 512mb .

I think your new ram is not capable of the speed of the older ram . what spec is the old ram / new ram ?
