I did some testing of BBC Iplayer ages ago I'm sure it was about
400mb an hour download to watch it, based on that if you did 4 hours a day you would be on 1.6GB a day just on video so you would go over the 40GB a month. Without counting any other downloads / gaming.
My parents got a bill for £20 for going over their low allowance due to watching Iplayer !! (10GB Allowance)
Its debatable that you would watch it 4 hours a day, but even so I'd go for a bigger allowance, I can download 40 gb in 5 hours on my 24MB connection. So 40GB in a month sounds low.
Do you download torrents? If you don't then 40GB should be enough, at one point I used to use 40GB for all those things including BBC iplayer and I've never had problems.
Also what ISP is it that's offering you this? Any ISP that does not give you some sort of program to measure your bandwidth (almost all of the ISPs don't) usually allow you to go over your limit (in this case 40gb) but if you do so almost every month then they send you a FUP letter, if you just go over your limit every 2 months or so they won't really say anything to you.
If any ISP does charge you for going over the limit once and if they don't offer a bandwidth measuring device you can very easily protest it and get away with it by simply stating they never gave you anything to measure your bandwidth.

Meaning there is no way of checking how much you have downloaded. So legally they cant give you a limit. i have been downloading loads for years now and have got no letters or anything. They cant do anything legally.

No but Talk Talk suck. They have bad uptime, bad service and bad yield on speeds.

Not that i know of, they have actually been pretty good with uptime and my speed never drops even at peak times.

A friend I know IRL also has the same issues, (the customer service told him to reboot his router 10+ times because it was the wireless' fault. Even though he was working on wired.) I most definitely do not recommend Talk Talk or anything owned by them.

But P2P I assume won't be blocked, given P2P is used for more than just torrents.

Reminds me of sales guy in tesco when shopping asking if i have home internet connection, i went yeah i got virgin 50mbps connection, he then proceeds to ask how much i pay for that an how he could offer me cheaper package. He then says how it's talktalk....i went talktalk? laughed an went no chance mate you'd have pay me to have that crap.
I'm with Talk-Talk and their service is fine. The router they supply is absolute tripe though.

What people dont realise is that if you went with sky you would get the exact same speed. The ISP does not control the speed, its what your line can take. so go with the cheapest and you will get the same

Mine restarted every 2 hours when i got it, now i have a Draytek router and a TP link AP and all is well
I must admit I wouldn't use the Huawei, we're in a poor connection area - I had to get a Netgear with modified firmware for a decent connection on my line.

few things to bare in mind with talktalk firstly make sure your exchange is actually LLU enabled and that there are no capacity issues http://www.talktalkmembers.com/content/view/109/149/ , not llu enabled or no capacity then walk away
I'd also go with the plus package as you don't want to be on the essentials when they do fix the usage monitor which they are currently doing given you will need to switch to plus once it is working or get fined every time you go over 40gb
also remember that going talktalk broadband also means going with talktalk for the line rental and phone package for a minimum of 18 months
oh and there phone support is horrendous and the only place to get anything done is the forums which takes foreverrrrr

Just go with an Enta reseller, £20 gig 30gig peak unlimited off peak. Regularly download 750gig a month with no complaints or service difficulties.
or someone like Eclipse that for a an extra tenner gives you another 70gb peak and unlimited off peak. off-peak with them is 23:00-09:00. You can also get a month to month contract for a tenner setup fee. I've had 0 problems with them so far.

whats the limit with BT unlimited as someone told me it says unlimited but it has a fair usage policy. i haven't got a clue how much this means i can use. we used to get sky unlimited and that was true unlimited, as in no fair usage policy. someone in the house works for bt so we get it free or i would still be with sky.:)
