OK i built a new system to eventually become a full HTPC, the system components are:

AMD Athlon X2 4600
Asus M2A-VM HDMI (currently using the onboard graphics)
4 sitcks of Corsair XMS2 1Gb 800mhz ddr2 memory
Samsung 500Gb SATA 2 Spinpoint HDD
Xilence Semi fanless 460w PSU
Vista Home premium

ok, so built it all up, installed vista, and got it running on friday night, went to bed feeling pleased with myself at yet another problem free build.

used it saturday, for a while, installed a few essentials, got vista's updates all up to speed, still no problems.

today (sunday) my son was playing a game (purble palace) on it, and it froze completely, no mouse, no blue screen of death, nothing, just frozen solidly.

after trying the usual stuff trying to get in to task manager, no joy, still frozen leaving it to see if it would come good, nothing, i used my last resort, and pressed reset (I know you shouldn't reset windows, but after 30 mins frozen solid, i felt the time had come)

screen goes blank, and then i get one long beep, two short, repeated over and over, which i now understand to be video problems.

So i set about disconecting everything off the mobo, the sata cables, excess USB headers, basicly just the fans, start & reset buttons, my keyboard, power connectors and VGA out. Still I'm getting one long beep, two short

Popped the battery out, did the jumper and re-set the bios, still one long beep, two short

so i removed all but one memory sticks, still one long beep, two short, then i removed the last memory stick, still one long beep, two short.

I took my cpu cooler off, and checked that my cpu was mounted properly, it was, stuck the cooler back on, still one long beep, two short

I tried a different power supply, still the same one long beep, two short.

I tried installing a known good graphics card, still one long beep, two short

So whats next? is my mobo knackered, or is there any thing i may have overlooked?

Seems like you have done everything, what does the manual say the beep means?

err the manual's a bit free from any form of info when it comes to problems, but from the net if its one long, two short, then its problems with the video adaptor

problem is that like i say i put a good graphics card in and thats not made things any better.

Download memtest x086 make a bootable cd/floppy and boot it and run the tests.

First step for any random crashes in my opinion

The thing wont even get as far as displaying anything, its as soon as the on button gets pressed.

just the beeps, no bios messages or options to press delete and enter the bios, no hdd trying to boot, nothing.

Otherwise I'd try running a live cd to see whats wrong.

the only thing i know for sure to be working are the case fans!

like i said, its dead as a computer.
