View Full Version : Will this work? (Kiera Knightly inside!)
Ok, so current setup is as follows: I've got my PS3 and my PC in my room. Router is currently in the living room. Both the PC and PS3 are connected wirelessly to the router. This makes me a sad panda, as the signal is pretty poor.
I have an idea in mind as to how to solve this, I just need confirmation that it'll work ;)

I'd like to be possibly to stream movies from my PC to my PS3 for laziness using this setup too, I asssume that'll work alright?
If there's a cheaper, less complicated way please let me know :p
i cant see anything apart from Kiera... just some fuzzy lines..

Well that depends on the inputs and outputs of Keira ;)
I dont see why not. Need to ensure the power is on the same curcuit at both locations though.
Most homeplugs have more than 1 network port so the switch could well be redundant - check the homeplug's manual :p
Otherwise I can't see any issue with that :thumb:

Not necessarily true... homeplugs ~can~ work across circuits - entirely depends on how it's wired though.

It all goes through the same fuse in the circuit breaker, if that helps.
WHOA WHOA WHOA mate!
Bit of tin foil around your router like a satalite shape and aim it towards you room.
Streaming help:
To stream content just turn on the media server option on the ps3 and follow a YT guide on how to configure WMP...
OR
Use this open source content from google that can stream all types of video rather than what the ps3 supports and it converts the format real time - you can often get away with streaming bluray with this too:
PS3 MS 1.1 (http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/downloads/detail?name=pms-setup-windows-1.10.51.exe&can=2&q=)
PS3 MS 1.2 (Beta) (http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/downloads/detail?name=pms-setup-windows-1.20.412.exe&can=2&q=)

Have you tried streaming 1080p movie files over 54g wireless? :(
I was going to say you'll need 200mb ones to stream 1080p movies..
yeah, stutters like a :censored: as it tries to send 10mbps+ !
however keep hold of that programme as it works wonders, or just Eyefinity your PC to your TV like it do and move WMP across, maximize that badboy then go lay down.

I will? I assumed that because the PS3 and PC will be connected to the switch, the movie data won't have to go through the homeplugs. Only internet traffic.

It's already connected to my PC, I just want to be really lazy sometimes and control playback remotely from my bed using the PS3 pad :p

Spot on with your assumption :thumb:
Although the switch may not even be needed if the homeplug has more than 1 port - depends on the homeplug you'll be using.

Your assumption was correct. I am getting a switch soon as I currently have a rubbish hub so everything goes to the router and back. :(
Cool, thanks guys. Just need to see if I can justify dropping £50 on my own laziness/slightly more stable connection :p

we all know the answer to that... :thumb:

Ah ok yeah... I was thinking the internet gateway thing was your main router device and didnt properly register that there was a switch in there too....
Might have to wait until next month, Fallout: New Vegas is out soon ;)

so is MoH & B.Ops....
ergh! and heres me thinking i was gonna buy xmas presents this month...
You will have no problem with that set up Gav. I have mine running on two different circuits in a similar setup, but with a xbox instead of a ps3. The whole same circuit thing is a myth in my view as Its working fine for me.
Edit: Fallout pre order! it can't come fast enough!
How about a long ethernet cable, some cable pins and a drill?

Rented accommodation :p
Polyfilla and paint it up when you move out !
A wire is cheaper and faster its a win win
I cant see why you wouldn't be able to stream 1080p via the internet with a wireless connection.
Unless you have 50mb internet, It woulnt be a bottle neck.
Rented accommodation :p
To be fair, Peter, lewees and myself all have 10m/15m Cat5e/Cat6 cables running from the router in our lounge to each of our rooms, just stuck down to the carpet/round a couple of the bannisters on the stairs with some ultra-wide masking tape so we don't trip over it (we're renting too as uni students).
Really cheap, can run our refurbished £35 Netgear gigabit router network easily and no dropped packets at all. (We also have 802.11n on that router too though for when we're in the lounge with our laptops...) Landlords don't mind... so job done all in for under £50 :knock:

i cant see the picture as its filtered at work :(
But cant you upstairs in your room add a switch box in for about a tenner, hook up the ps3 and pc to it then use sharing from pc to ps3 through that instead of doing it over wifi? would be a lot better for you
i use tversity its very good and free, http://tversity.com/
If you want better internet upstairs you could (if can be bothered) just hook an ethernet from the router upstairs to the switch box.
I did this and have the cable hidden under the floor boards just takes some effort but can always do it with trunking instead, cheap and cheerfull.
hope this helps

The problem with that is, the PS3 is stupid, and only has one MAC address assigned to both it's network adaptors, so you can't have ethernet and wireless active at the same time.
Ideally I'd have my movies streamed via ethernet, and my online PSN access via wireless, but it can't be done.
I tried just using a crossover cable to connect the PC to the PS3, but if I do that and use internet connection sharing I get NAT level 3, which stops me playing games online anyway :p
I'll just go with the switch/homeplug method at the end of the month I think.

If there is only 1 mac address for the ps3 couldnt you do what i said intially with the switch box but then disable the wireless on the ps3 and have its connection shared from the pc via the switch and the pc wireless from downstairs?
Easy to setup internet connection sharing and that way you could stream movies from pc to ps3 through ethernet and still have net access, only bummer is you need to have the pc turned on for the ps3 to go online with :(
just an idea

My PCs on 24/7 anyway so that's not an issue. The issue is when I use ICS for some reason I get a restricted NAT level, which stops me playing a lot of people online using the PSN. Doesn't happen when I connect the PS3 directly to the router though.
I've tried forwarding ports and everything but it just won't work :p
ICS is a failorama. Just get all your devices wired to a switch and let the router do NAT/DHCP for you, should work. Dunno about the homeplug stuff, never played with that.

Windows 7. Just using the standard Windows firewall, which I've tried disabling. No dice.

sounds stupid but have you port forwarded the router for the PC for the ps3 ports needed?

just reading and doing ics you can only get moderate nat at best so open plug will be easiest way for you dude
