Hi folks, my PC isn't running as fast as it used to.
Could you recommend some user friendly software for cleaning up my HD, registry etc.

That wont speed up your PC really, You should use MSCONFIG to stop random things from starting, uninstall anything you dont use and maybe a small RAM upgrade. A Almost failsafe way of gaining speed is Reinstalling your OS, the chances are you have not done it in a while/Ever

Thanks joker + broadsword, is it easy to use, as I'm not very pc savvy

Thanks Seanbond, but is there anyway short of reinstalling OS to speed it up?

CCleaner is the mutts :thumb:

It's not ~very~ easy to use, you need to have a rough idea of what everything is that it scans for, but there is a brief description and stuff is mostly self-explanatory :)

If in doubt, ask ;) Run it once on stuff you're comfortable with, ask about the stuff you're not, then run it again - takes seconds :)

Registry cleaners can help an awful lot, I use Glarysoft Registry Cleaner - It has worked wonders in the past.

Random thought... Your profile says Vista... I use a program called TweakXP which did get quite technical but had some wonderful tweaks :thumb: - they also seem to do a TweakVista available here http://www.tweakvista.com/tweakvistautility/download.aspx Always worth a try, but prepare to be blinded by techno-babble :D

Always worth uninstalling stuff you no longer need and ~then~ defragging the hard disk... it won't help a lot, but every little helps ;)

CCleaner gets my vote..

Whenever I clean up a PC, I use/do these (normally in this order):

CCleaner
a good purge of startup items using MSCONFIG,
set the page file to a set size to stop it changing size and massively fragmenting your drive
a decent defragmentation program to put relevant files together, and move the page file to the fastest part of the drive..
Then CCleaner again
Then a final defrag.

That normally gives some good results and noticably speeds up the computer :)

My procedure:

CCleaner, run cleaner
CCleaner clean up startup items
CCleaner find and fix registry issues, until there are none left.
Remove un needed programs
Defraggler.

I use Ashampoo WinOptimizer as it has (amongst a few other things):
Drive cleaner
Registry optimizer
Internet Cleaner
Defrag 3
Service manager
Start-up Tuner
Internet Tuner
Process Manager
Uninstall manager
Antispy
File Associator
Disk Doctor
Diskspace Explorer
System Benchmark
FileWiper
Undeleter
File Encryption
File Splitter

Its "one click" feature sorts out the drive, internet & registry in around 20-30 seconds :)

Back up docs and such. Format c: and then Setup windows.exe are good!

Reg cleaners I find are a bit like snake oil. Disabling in msconfig, un-needed stuff is one wasy like Sean said but be careful not to prevent essential services from running.

Sometimes creating a new windows user profile to login to can speed things up.
