Seeing as this subforum is pretty dead, I thought I should post this, my UbuntuStudio setup with 'new' and shiny Compiz/Beryl features. :D Sorry about the huge pics. :o

Not really, nowhere near the required power needed for Vista's Flip 3D and its other effects.

The above is running pretty smoothly on a Sempron 3000 (Skt754 version) with 512MB DDR400 RAM and a nVidia 6200. :D

hmm, looks nice and swish, but but that distro have a root user, i've used Ubuntu before and there isn't one.

I'm going to install Suse when i get home. I'm getting a little tired of Fedora 7, my uni uses it and it is pretty much a pile of old cods wallop :).

There is a root account but you're not logged into it by default for security reasons. Every time you want to install something or make a major change to the system, you log in as root.

Im just downloading version 7.10, i have had beryl working before though, major work, gonna get compiz working builtin i hope, need to make sure there are drivers for my X1950... newer cards suffer from not being supported well.

as someone said - there is a root user but you can't log directly into it for security reasons. However, if using 'sudo' drives you mad - just open a terminal window and run 'sudo bash'. Then everything you run from the terminal will be run as the root user :)

Or sudo su....

i use su for mine, But for some things you jsut need to login onto an X session using root, as bringing up loads of superuser consoles can be annoying, even multithreading them can be a pain when you accidentally close it and everything goes *BINK* gone.

These have actually been merged now, and have created a project known as "Compiz Fusion" which is maintained by both and is super cool. With regards to the amount of memory it requires -- it is significantly less than you would think as it's a compositing layer of X.org and not actually some kind of spiffy 3D effect like on windows which uses comparably more memory due to it running in the application layer, rather than with the graphics when they are rendered.

Again, gutsy now has these things in it along with the dual monitor conf (sweet) and AppArmor which is just great!

alt F2 does the same.

kdesu kate is your friend ( even on Gnome machines although you will have to install kate first).

btw.. I've not managed to get any effects working on my Ubuntu 7:10 with an X700 ati card installed. ( Restricted drivers are being used)

I'm not a fan of the cube, it just seems to start spinning wildly out of control.

I like scrolling a little transparency onto a window at will though.
