Upgrading my current system. Keeping my Ferrari case, pioneer DVD burner and my floppy + card reader.

Old system is geforce 6600
Abit KV7-V
Athalon
1 gig ram
Maxtor 120 gig hard drive.

Was looking at a

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 processor
AS rock ConRoe1333-DVI/H R2.0
GeForce 8500GT 512MB Graphics Card
2 gig ram
500GB Seagate Barracuda SATA2 16MB

My friend said I should look at an AMD2 64 bit Dual core.

Bit confused - will the intel boards be upgradable in the future?
Friend says AMD upgradable because of the AMD2 slot, but I have just seen a AM2+ board so is this the way AMD are going.

Also lost on the graphics card, I play EQ2 but I guess that's the most graphics intensive game at the moment but may get Never winter nights 2 + a couple of others.

Don't envisage upgrading to vista in the foreseeable future, so don't need DX 10.

Is there another budget card in the geforce 7 series or even an ATI card?

i personally dont like AMD. Everyone think AMD is the best but id say Intel are. So id stick to an Intel CPU.

Personally, i am a fan of amd, but intel will upgrade much more and are better performance, dont think about amd atm, phenom isnt going to be upto much and c2d is amazing still.

Intel is way up in front of AMD now, stick with Intel.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 processor (Good)

AS rock ConRoe1333-DVI/H R2.0 (i'd recommend getting a board based on the nforce 650 chipset, when they are back in stock)
27306

GeForce 8500GT 512MB Graphics Card (yep, should do fine)

2 gig ram (you need to be specific, try this RAM 24327, should be back in stock soon)

500GB Seagate Barracuda SATA2 16MB (these are ok :))

Also your going to need a nice PSU for this setup

I've always wondered about peoples views on this subject.

I have to go with Mickey on this one and say Intel because I too have never liked AMD processors. Like a few people have mentioned in other threads the new Intel stuff is coming out after Christmas (correct me if I'm wrong) so i'd wait for that

If your not wanting DX10, and an 8500 would be useless for DX10 anyway, get an Ati 1950pro.

Been looking on Ebay for second hand Gforce 7800. Think I may have overstreched my budget looking at your suggestions. What about if I get a lesser chip ie a Core 2 Duo 4300.
And on videocard there's a Jetway GeForce 7600 GT 256MB DDR3 PCI-E, which looks good value

becarefull with eBay when looking for second hand computer components. People dont tend to say if theres anythign wrong with the item ie my mate bought a graphics card the description said the graphics card works, when he got it yes it worked but the fan cooler didnt, just be carefull.

Yeah you might want to check the prices too, some of the stuff on there can be within a few ££ of buying new stuff, which of course comes with guarentees etc.

In the past I've been an AMD fan but I think for performance right now it has to be intel...

I always have use AMD for my personal computers. Some builds for other people I use Intel but mostly use the AMD range. In my opinion you get more bang for your buck, or did anyway. With all this new Intel stuff up in coming I can see a change being made I.E Me changing to Intel in order to get the best for my money. Intel have far superior CPU;s out at present. The Intel Extreme Chip QX6700 is dear but is far superior to AMD's quad core CPU's. I would gladly have an Intel chip in my PC now.

The Q6600 is cheap and still superior to AMD's top chip :)
