I've had mine for over a month now, so while the novelty factor has worn off I still love using it.... and I still cant stop playing FF:TA via GameBoid. >.<
I got my nexus in january and the buzz never wears off tbh, im sure your plastic toy phone is just the same as the metal and glass ones us adults use :D
Addicted to my phone lol. And angry birds. Love the google sky maps thing. Really helps find stuff in night sky. Still feel like i have a lot to learn but reading through stuff here has helped. So member 4 then.

Hahaha just because it's in a better casing doesn't make it better. You ever heard the saying "you cant polish a ****" or "dont judge a book by its cover" ;) I think those describe the desire and the galaxy in that order :D
booom
Oi! I was at college on tapatalk and couldnt change sig :(.
Edit: Mods can you put in "Samsung Galaxy S Member 5" In my sig as if I do it says sig is too big??
Haha i think in fairness pullen is 3 so everyone else move up 1 ;)

thats true as i have a Nexus One the phone all other android 2.0 phones are based on including yours. joking aside i like the galaxy id actually reccomended one as the phone to get right now... now all the nexus's are sold out :) my next phone will be a 4.3 inch one.. but probably a motorola OR the new samsung phone
If i didnt have the galaxy and i was ordering after xmas id probably get the Desire HD. But hat would only be because its newer than the galaxy s.
There all top phones in there own right just down to personal preferance which ui you like and which you prefer to hold/use.
Has anybody had this and an iphone? i want an honest opinion on this phone vs the iphone not just an apple bashing post as i i'm due a renewal at the end of the month.
im being 100% honest here I am an android fan but i really think to a lot of people the android is the better option. Its not as stylish and its more techy than an Iphone so if your not a techy person and you can afford to pay a little more for your apps and music then the Iphone is good
But the android system and the galaxy s is the best one available right now is a VERY good phone better than the Iphone but if you have already spent a fortune on iphone apps and Itunes music then you will lose that stuff if you get an android BUT replacing them will be free or at least a lot cheaper. I have 200 apps and only 1 is paid for most apps on android are free.
I have a Desire, and my wife has an iPhone 3GS... several people at work have the iPhone4.
I'd say the iPhone 4 has a very nice screen, and does look good, but functionally speaking there's very little to choose between the 3 of them. The phone is more about what apps it can run, and the apps available for iOS and Android are now so similar there's almost nothing to choose.
What one phone can do, the others can pretty much. So aside from camera pixellage/flash and screen specs, they are all as good as eachother imo.
If you can afford an iPhone4, and have an iPhone currently then I would go for that as you're already familiar with it. If you want to save some pennies, get a Galaxy or Desire HD, or to save even more pennies, get a Desire non-HD.
/my 2p :)

I had a iPhone 3gs and changed to the Galaxy S i prefer the galaxy as i can do more with it and it performs way better imho. I loved my iPhone but it became redundent after getting the Galaxy as a "spare". I would say Galaxy over the iPhone all day but the iPhone has more support for apps and accesories so ty them both and make your own mind up only you can say which you prefer. Me I sold the Iphone and kept the galaxy :)
you have a galaxy?! you should of mentioned it ty :D
I has one! Member 7 here! And I don't care if I skipped some numbers :)

I'll add myself to this distinguished list. Received mine last week, dead impressed with it so far, Android is brilliant, and with so much flexibility. The screen too, the SCREEN! It's beautiful.
What number does that make me now?

Headphones in but when I play music it stutters?
i need some decent headphones/handsfree for mine, the stock ones suck
Having to use the stock ones due to the fact my skull candys dont work properly :(
If you get ones with the mic in make sure the button works fine and isnt reversed. I have to have the button pressed in for the headphones to work ok :(

Mine will be coming tomorrow so i may have to place an application to join this club!
Thats ok although applications will be subject to certain conditions now.
1) Must root phone
2) Must run lag fix
3) Must gloat over the poor desire users with there lower spec phones.
4) Must state how un plasticky the Galaxy feels.
Ok 1,2 & 4 are optional but 3 is a must :)
Have Samsung fixed this Lag Fix yet or are they planning on it?
Supposed to be done with the froyo update which is why it was pulled and is being redone and due for release in a week or two.
Ah, so no official 2.2 for the galaxy yet?
Yes and no, you can download and flash it yourself with the official release which was pulled or wait for the new version.
Do you have a link where i can check ETA of the new version?
I think i may just wait, then i needn't do the Lag Fix.
same as dexta i might just wait
also what does rooting the galaxy s do?
and does anyone know where i can get a decent case for it?
thanks

I think that the first post needs a member list!
whack up the list in a post, and i'll edit first post :)

I've decided to wait myself. The ETA isn't official, but it's thought it should be around by the end of november. I think that was from Samsung's twitter feed...
They're expecting the carriers to have it done by then too, though I can't see Three having it done ever to be honest. They never released an update for my E71 whilst I had it, despite the firmware getting updated incredibly frequently with lots of fixes and even new features. I debranded. I think I might debrand the SGS too and use the forthcoming Samsung generic Froyo release. No word on there being an issued fix for the 3 button problem though, I really need an official fix. There's a chance Froyo may, but flashing at all is a risk without it. I don't want to return the phone now just for that.
to be fair i'm verrrry happy with stock 2.1 galaxy, with 1 click lag fix. So happy indeed I see no reason to update to 2.2 etc etc
Flash video? I think that's only possible on Froyo or am I imagining that? Could be useful if you browse a lot on the phone.
Am i right in thinking that the 3 button download mode issue isn't on all phones, just some?
That's correct. About a third I think.
Right, fingers crossed then! How do you know if you've got a dud?

Pressing power+down (or up)+menu when the phone is off won't boot into download/recovery mode and it will just boot as normal.

and its a great phone so far, sim is taking a while to register so i will have to wait until i can get full use out of it :( 600 minutes unlimited texts & unlimited internet for £35 a month on vodaphone, seems not bad? but im kinda thinking i could have got a better deal elsewhere
^^^^^£35 a month i got the 600 mins 500 texts + unlimited net for £25 (17.50 after redemption)
also that 3 button thing works for me does that mean im safe?

bugger. thats why i felt done out of money although unlimited texts i will probably need but the extra £10 a month doesnt seem worth it :|

should have got the tmob £25 deal, 600 mins, free net (3gb fair use - most networks have 500-1gb fair use), free text or landline.
whats all this 3 button thing and being safe?
callum do you get any redemption with it for £35 a month you could have got an iphone 4
however i compared my galaxy s to my mates iphone and his is heavy and the signal is crap he had 1 bar and i had 3

yeah but its £152 for the phone and i needed a phone now and im skint and probably will be for a while :(
and im not sure sunjoo i'll have to phone Vodaphone tomorrow to get it all registered and stuff because apparently theres problems with vodaphone numbers recently so i'll ask about that too.
if i had the choice of free iphone 4 or samsung galaxy s for £25 a month i'd have still chosen the galaxy.
on 3 you can get the iphone 4 for £99 upfront then £30 a month
but anyways what do you think of the phone?

ach well im more than happy i have actually got a phone again :D have gone without one for nearly a year :| had a crappy Motorola PAYG phone that i never topped up
im very pleased with it :) i originally was set on getting the HTC Desire HD but like nowhere has got it in stock and i really couldnt justify waiting till around christmas until most places were gonna get them in stock so the guy in phones4u said anyway. just cant wait to get my sim working so i can get on the internet and actually use it and update software etc
i chose the Galaxy S over the iphone, HTC HD and HTC Z and i honestly think i have made the right choice :)
Official Froyo now available via Kies for unlocked Handsets
Have you upgraded yet then? Gonna check mine tomorrow see if theres any difference.
I just tried and it updated Kies but said I already had the latest version on my handset.
What version 2.2 u got installed?
Which is the latest version.... Mine is still xxjpm so will update when i get home tomorrow.
I got the FROYO.XXJPO which i have now rooted and lag fixed.
Its a Sim Free phone, so don't know if that make a difference!
I have to say, i thought the Desire was fast, but once the Galaxy S is Lag Fixed its just in a different league!
So member 13 here then!
EDIT: there is no member 3 or 10... should i take one of those?
Was that upgraded through kies? Will have to sort mine tomorrow.
Glad you liking the Galaxy then.
JPO was the slightly older version by about 2 days! That's why I got JPA.
Ok cool. When I get chance to properly play about again ill get it sorted.

haha post edit fail!
so far i'm not convinced, it only seems it gives me flash which i don't use.
Cant understand though why you'd wanna stick with 2.1 though when 2.2 is out.
its like a bios update, until it gives me a worthwhile reason to update with a real benefit - its 10-15 minutes time wasted - of which I could be slaying Darkspawn with my Axe of Destruction!
Apart from flash, and the epeen of saying i have 2.2, give me some real reasons to go 2.2?

Found a fantastic app last night! It's on the market and free and called "White Noise Light". It produces a continuous noise of either:
Airplane (Good sleep inducing)
Beach (makes me want to pee)
Clock (annoying)
Chimes (also annoying)
Crickets (hmm not sure on this one)
Fan (Relaxing)
White Noise (Blocks out other noise and helps sleep)
Extreme rain
Thunder
Train
I slept pretty soundly with Airplane noise. Using inear headphones with memory foam. Quite comfy dont notice them in, I stuck the phone under my pillow.

Thats a great way to expose your brain to EMR for the entire night! :chairfall:
Far better to get a clock radio with CD, and stick in a nature sound cd, i love the sound of crickets, ocean, or rain when trying to sleep :coffee:

What about if the phone is in flight mode?
I have my phone on flight mode about 30cm away from my head whilst I sleep...
Well the headphones produce a small amount but nothing is proven to harm you. Mobiles would not be legal and what abouts those living with a mast on top of them. I think you are safe lol.

In all fairness we are yet to find out the long term affects. Many would argue that we don't know the true cause of many diseases that are on the increase. The amount of radio traffic in the air could be a contributing factor, just like over processed foods and all the other many changes that modern life keeps introducing. Personally though I don't worry about it and my phone is always on and by my side day and night :thumb:
Edit
Whoops, don't know whether a HD2 Android / iPhone user is allowed to comment in your special club :(
I fixed my 3-button problem by flashing the secondary bootloader and then fooled Kies into thinking I had an XEU phone rather than a H3G one, and got it updated to Froyo JPO. Just on stock, the phone feels a lot faster and less buggy, it's brilliant now. I couldn't ask for more. Flash player works great too, especially on iplayer, I was surprised. The screen is sooo nice.

I've got a Trifield Electromagnetic Radiation dectector, and all mobiles pump out a fair amount, particularly when picking up the network.
Even without the network the battery itself pumps out EMR, i'm not bothered by using a phone or putting it to my ear to talk, but sleeping with it next to your brain for the entire night while your body is repairing seems a bad idea LOL
I'll post some pics when I have chance of the meter with a mobile phone
Powerlines are the most extreme end of the EMR scale, but its amazing how much clock radios and mobile phones still put out.

I just got a Galaxy S, can I be member 14?
So what is everyone's current boot time? I was at 564 hours but had to reboot.
battery died last night on the way back from footie so not very long atm :(
Can I join? I wanna be member 15
By all means, just update your sigs!
Had an issue with mine recently, an update on ADW messed it up and hid all my widgets so i had to do a factory reset. When i booted up it had a black screen and force close vibrations. So i had to flash it back to XWJM8 using Odin with repartition and then back to JPO without partition. Was a bleak few hours with much googling happening!
So what is everyone's current boot time? I was at 564 hours but had to reboot.
I reboot mine once a week. If I don't the memory seems to slowly fill up and the device can become a bit unresponsive.
I have about 120mb free at the start of the week, dropping to ~70mb by the end of day 7. One of my apps somewhere was obviously really well written
Big boot times just make the device chug!
My mrs just got this. Anything she needs or should know? Seems to be a popular phone.
Flash it with 2.2.1 firmware and lag fix isn't needed at all. Also adds OTA updates as opposed to using kies :D
Other than that no nothing to know ;)
On the subject of OTA updates, as this in a leaked version, it has been mentioned over on XDA that other firmwares when leaked had this feature, but in the official release it was removed - so here's hoping that Samsung leave it be this time!
Also Tystar, since flashing it - have you checked your product code? It changed mine to KOR which is the Korean code! Had to change it back manually!

looks like it has :( not needed to change before so need to find correct 1 to change back too.
Changed to XEU now. Noticed alot more Samsung apps showing now too.
Since the 2.2.1 upgrade there's no real need to lag fix other than bonus points on quadrant.
Forgot to add, also has kies ota now so no need for the crap software to be installed on the pc as it uses your browser. works so much better too.
Have you tried Vlingo? I don't normally go for the voice activated stuff, but its really good!
Tried it before, not into voice stuff
I flashed 2.2.1 (JPX) last night. Also changed my product code but I changed it back to XEU.
The phone ran it's battery down when not in use really fast overnight, and battery usage seems through the roof for some reason. Haven't found the problem yet, so I'd hold off JPX until I've figured it out. Performance on JPX is amazing though. The thing flies. Also, the stock email client is fixed - it doesn't lag and generally be horrible any more.
I've not noticed any difference on the battery usage on jpx. Certainly better than stock 2.2 :)
I think it might have been to do with changing the product code back from KOR. I flashed the whole set of JPU firmware again and then JPX PDA on top. Seems to work fine, still says XEU, but not sure about the battery. JPO was epic for me (3 days give or take).
I wish I could get 3 days outta my battery, actually I'd love to get 2 Days out of the battery ;)
this^^ a day usage and it's down lol
JPY and possibly even JPZ (by filename) seem to be appearing now. Just building up the courage to flash to JPY.....
can I be added to the club?
Anybody know the settings to use for hotmail? Tried all sorts, trawled the web and for the life of me I cannot get it to work....
Hi Josh,
Are you using the inbuilt email application?
You should be able to simply put in your hotmail address and it should sort it automatically.
Let us know what you're using and I'm sure we can sort it out. Also let us know what firmware you're using. I highly recommend the JPY builds onwards, as the email application has performance and reliability improvements that make it much more usable! If you don't have the courage/know how to get onto a new firmware, either read up or you could try k9 Mail (available on the market) which isn't bad at all :)
Don't like the scratch resistant glass, not very effective, two big gashes in mine :(

Not sure what else to suggest. Mine has always picked up the settings for Hotmail once I put the email address in. It does mention something about needing a special hotmail account that supports POP, maybe you need to enable that in your webmail like you can do with IMAP and gmail? Seems unlikely considering you can't get it to work at all.

Try these if you have no joy then you may need the Hotmail Plus account.
Create a new account using the following settings:

POP port: 995
POP SSL required: yes
POP user name: your complete Windows Live Hotmail address (including "@hotmail.com", "@live.com", etc.)
POP password: your Windows Live Hotmail password
SMTP (outgoing) server: smtp.live.com
SMTP port: 25
If you run into problems sending mail, try "587" for the SMTP port instead.

I cant see that being any better than a normal inexpensive Gel case.

Yes it does, and it's a decent one.

I guess you haven't used one then?, I have a Morpeth Mobiles gel one and a silicon one here, I also have four others i bought of fleabay, which are varying grades of crap. The Morpeth ones are OK, but the Case-Mate is in a league of it's own.
I can do some pics if required.
Only downside really is that the rubberised finish can slide along certain plastic surfaces like an ice cube on glass, you wouldn't really expect it to happen.

I just took the plunge and stuck Darky's ROM 9.2 on mine. Brilliant - fast, no lag (without lagfix) and I can now get 3 days battery from it much more easily.
Check out this guide here (http://darky.ficeto.com/community/index.php?threads/guide-installation-guide-for-first-time-users.315/), should have the phone running super-sweet if you do it.
Just make sure you've read up on using Odin and checked the 3-button fix if yours doesn't work. I have a H3G handset and it didn't.
Once you're on a custom ROM, it's a lot easier to flash to a new/updated one using CWM etc.

Wanted to do this... but The three button recovery mode thing doesn't work :o
Doing the fix atm...
Got the three buttons working now.. Really want to use that Darky's 9.2 ROM tbh but it looks all so confusing. I have no idea where to start???
Some info of my phone if it helps:
GT-I9000 -Obviously.
Firmware 2.2
Baseband I9000NEJP2
Kernel 2.6.32.9 Root@SE-S608 #1
Froyo.nejp5
Check out the official thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814091).
Download the 9.2 ROM as the ROM list provided in the guide I linked above is a little out of date.
Could you tell me which bit you're stuck on? Good work on getting the 3-button mode fixed, that's probably the riskiest and most difficult part, so you should be ok.
Oh, and you need to follow the instructions for Froyo on the guide I linked, as you have Android 2.2 (which is Froyo). You must have one of these firmwares:
Samsung Stock Eclair 2.1
Samsung Stock Froyo 2.2 / 2.2.1
Darky's ROM v6.x or v7.x
Most other Custom ROMs
If you don't have this, for example, if you got your phone on contact and haven't de-branded it yet, then you need to flash to a stock samsung firmware first.
If you're good to go, basically, the list of things to do is like this:
1) fix 3-button recovery - done
2) Flash CF-Root to get root access and recovery 2e bootloader (which allows unsigned zip files to run, 3e (froyo version) does not)
3) Download Odin
4) Make sure USB drivers for phone are installed. Easiest way to do this is install Samsung Kies and make sure it connects to the program ok.
5) Boot into download mode and flash CF-Root with Odin.
6) Reboot, confirm superuser is in apps, and install darky's rom app from the market. (Not essential, but if you want to customise the ROM, do this, otherwise skip)
7) Put the downloaded ROM onto your internal SD card.
8) Download Clockworkmod recovery and also put it onto the internal sd card
9) Shutdown completely (until it vibrates) and reboot into recovery mode
10) Select 'apply sdcard/update.zip, the wipe data/factory reset (this will wipe the phone, so make sure you have already backed up)
11) Select 'install zip from sd card' and choose the downloaded ROM (Darky's 9.2...zip etc)
12) It can take a while for the first boot, but now you should be done.
I've missed a lot of details, so I really recommend you use this guide (http://darky.ficeto.com/community/index.php?threads/guide-installation-guide-for-first-time-users.315/), as before, but my steps are just an outline of that. There's a whole lot more you can do once the ROM is on there.

How do I go about flashing to Stock firmware mate?
I'm useless with phones lol.

Use odin to flash the roms, some roms arent great so when loading it just vibrates, no worries - just reflash a different rom.
This is so frustrating lol.
Alright, you need a stock ROM first then.
Take a look here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846913). Download links (I recommend flashing to JPY as it's safe and stable, as well as officially official! Choose XEU too) and a quick guide.
Don't forget to back up your EFS folder first!
I recommend you sign up to XDA Forums and do some reading/searching to get a feel for what you need to do first. Only flash when you're confident.

About to try it out. :thumb:
Gingerbread now out in Beta on samfirmware. I may give this one a bash tomorrow and see what it's like.
Yep, great to hear they're working on it. I was following the thread on XDA pretty closely and have decided to wait for an official release before I try it out. Very happy with Darky's 9.2 atm.

Pretty close to selling my SGS atm. It seems to have followed the exact same pattern as my original G1.
-Buy phone. OMGAWESOME!
-Get some updates, moar awesome!
-6 months of ownership. Weird crap starts happening...
Seriously, there's been a few times this week i've had to physically restrain myself from throwing the bastard thing against the wall. Since updating to Froyo it just seems to be testing my patience CONSTANTLY (just like my G1 did after updating to Donut). Hard locks, applications crashes, camera freezing, CONSTANT GOD DAMN LAG, memory card issues, doesn't ever want to save a ringtone for more than a day, absolutely laughable GPS accuracy, dropping calls, auto-rotation going crazy half the time, battery life being completely inconstant. Honestly it just goes on and on.
It cant be a hardware issue, it's never been dropped, got wet or been anywhere overly warm. If it is software I know I can probably solve all these issues by rooting and what not but I can neither be arsed and shouldn't have to.
If it carries on taking me for a mug it's getting a factory reset and appearing in the classifieds. Just a heads up.
anyone getting the sgs 2?

Now it's giving me the option to connect the USB mass storage WHILE IT'S PLUGGED INTO THE MAINS CHARGER.
DO YOU WANT TO DIE PHONE? DO YOU WANT ME TO TEAR YOU TO BITS?!!!
anyone getting the sgs 2?
Have considered it when my upgrade is due in august, will see what the top smart phones are at the time and go from there.

Just saw this post. My phone appears to be doing the same... This is why I'm contemplating selling it. I'm going to attempt to put a ROM on it though and see if that sorts it as the phone itself is excellent.. when it works :D

Yay, mine seemed to die COMPLETELY on the way home from work Friday. Was browsing these very forums when the screen suddenly goes blank, being a lefty I just assumed I hit the lock/power button but no, it was stone dead.
Removed battery a couple of times, left it out for a few minutes, held the power button for 20-30 seconds, nothing was bringing it back to life. Once I got home I plugged it into the mains charger and it springs back into life, albeit with a reset clock and date (1:15am on 21 December 2005 to be specific).
God I hate this phone now...
Do you have the 3-button recovery mode? What firmware are you running? There are a lot of reasons for weird behaviour on android, it'd be worth checking out the software ones first. If you're not on a newish 2.2.1 firmware I'd strongly recommend flashing the whole lot (and maybe the bootloader too) to get the whole device on a fresh new base. Then if you still have issues it's back to the shop.
It's an absolutely cracking phone when it works properly, but because of the very complex nature of todays smartphones (particularly android), troubleshooting them can be a pain in the proverbials.
EDIT: Did you factory reset after upgrading any firmware? Sometimes files from old versions play havoc and cause force closes etc all the time.
my 3g data has gone phoned up o2 they say take it back to the shop wifi works fine on it... annoying!

Have you checked your APN settings? Sometimes they are lost with firmware upgrade or even with some widgets I have experienced that! If you're on Three UK I have the correct APN settings here.

I'd wait for the SGSii I think the optimus 2x only has 512mb of ram(?). It might just be me, but one of the main benefits behind dual core should be multitasking, right...so why not extra RAM to help out?
Plus the SGSii has an amazing screen! SAMOLED+ Or something ridiculous, apparently uses 70% less battery than SAMOLED? (don't quote me on any of this, it's just from reading around. Until the phone is actually extensively tested no-one can know for sure.)
Looks like those on 3 will be getting gingerbread in the next couple of weeks:

I'm also on Three but I won't be flashing their version of Gingerbread. The good news is this must mean there's a stable version out and about that they are able to work on. We could probably expect the official Samsung version to show up pretty soon.

My phone is begging for gingerbread, especially the lock animation.
Download 'screen off and lock' from the market.
Go to the configuration app in the drawer and select 'delay device locking', then from the drop-down underneath select 'old TV style'.
If using a custom launcher, such as launcherpro, you can assign a swipe of the dock icons (I choose the app drawer icon) to launch an app. Choose the Screen off and lock app. You could also add a shortcut to the homescreen.
Now, if you swipe the app drawer button or press the shortcut, you'll get the Gingerbread lock animation. It won't work with the power button lock, but I was not using that before I noticed this new effect as I don't want to wear out the power button since the phone has to last me another 18 months.
Enjoy!

I'm on Darky's 9.5 and it has the gingerbread 3D launcher, which is the only launcher that I've seen work without any lag at all.
The community has done a great job in making JVK a passable firmware, but I can't help but think it'll be replaced by a stable version soon anyway.
The glitches I was getting was due to the way I flashed the rom. I have tried the correct method, wiping all data, before and after flash and it's rock solid with my addons. Instal CWM and you can then easily push the animations without playing with Deodexed roms and such.
Are there loads of roms for the Galaxy phones? im thinking of getting a SII and i will only get it if its really hackable. My desire has about 3245346537456958

Three are aledging there will be a new rom out in the next couple of weeks. They are releasing Gingerbread, since last month, so I do expect there will be more.
Hang on, are they the official ones or the custom ones?
They're all the official ROMs.
Look here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=665) for custom ROMs.
The Galaxy SII will ship with Gingerbread as standard, and since it'll be the best phone out by a long way, there should be plenty of development on it. The SGS has a lot nowadays too.
I still have a year or more on my contract, I shall be getting the S2 for sure though.

Same, im thinking about selling my Desire and just buying the SII
Snake have u rooted & lagfixed Gingerbread? Seems a little slower to me
I have rooted it, no lag fix. It's pretty smooth for me although I only get a score of 984 on quadrant, it feels nice and quick. I have replaced a few files too. When you flashed, did you do a factory wipe before and after? I did this on my most recent flash and found it seemed to make everything a little nicer.
Factory reset, and full format would deffo smooth things up before upgrade.
Yeah done all that. Works fine just seems not as zippy as before but certainly smoother if that makes sense.
So what do i do when my phone comes?
Whats best to put on it?

Depends. If you want it to function properly and all the time you obviously need to faff around with ROM's, rooters, lag fixes and loaders and the like.... I genuinely cannot be arsed with that so instead I just shout at mine alot till it does work.

No faffing required. Stick the latest Samsung stock ROM on there and you're off.
Simply download it from samfirmware and flash onto the phone with odin or hemidall.
No lag fix needed on the latest ROMs, they're fast!

Go here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=656). Read, absorb information, flash your phone and enjoy.
Or, just leave it as you get it from the shop. Your call.
I suggest you obtain all three versions of Angry Birds, get Titainium backup and investigate on how to Root your Firmware. If you are happy with the Stock firmware I would stick with it for now. You will find that Rooting and applying the Lag fix can make a great difference.
I should make a thread where people can post idiots guides for me to follow.
Click this do that kind of thing, have no clue with phones at all.
Why should i root it? what does that do?
Rooting it gives "Root" access for certain applications. Such as Titianium backup and many others. Without rooting, you are limiting what you can do with the phone. There is a sticky all about this I think in this section.
Which version of Firmware are you running?

Whatever you go with make sure you also change your product code back as they usually default to KOR when you do a firmware change.
I usually go with XEU
Just flashed 2 SGS with a custom ROM cooked in Doc's kitchen. Really very fast, no bugs found, stable so far, seems solid. I highly recommend trying it out, I think they're better than Darky's. I used the Speedmod kernel which is excellent so far.
Look here (http://romkitchen.org/sgs/?s=home) and go to generator tab to get started.
Flash with CWM as usual.
Phone came around 6pm.
Just put some music and seasons of south park on to watch on the bus.
Awesome, awesome phone.
Running 2.2.1 and it seems very fast, installed iplayer in less than 10 seconds, does everything first time i touch it and very responsive.
Awesome, just awesome.
Glad you like it. Didn't think you were getting one though. My Wifi on the phone seems to have failed. :/
Well i wasn't going to but with Vodafones shoddy service and lies i managed to cancel my contract with them for nothing and got these instead.
It would appear that i am now back in the club lol.
After buying an Orange San Francisco which didn't seem to want me to put a custom rom on it, i came across a great deal on a brand new SGS.
Running the leaked 2.3.3 with CF root Kernel and ext4 conversion.

And i'm out. Piece of shoot thing finally properly died today. After 4-5 days of suffering chronic bad battery life (literally minimal use and whinging out being on it's last legs by 1-1:30pm every day) it's now refusing to come back to life at all.
Where do I stand now? Surely as it has no physical damage it should be covered under warranty?
Yeah, contact your provider. Probably needs a firmware flash.
My friend got a 3000 battery on ebay for £12 as opposed to the 1500 it comes with.
Samsung branded as well.

What's worrying is that while powering up/battery charging issues seem to be quite common everything i've seen still shows other people being able to boot into recovery mode or get the charging graphic come up when plugged into the mains. I get NOTHING, absolutely nothing like there isn't even a battery in the bastard thing.
Snakedoc, it was after using kies late last week to upgrade the firmware (in the hope of curing some of the problems I was having previously...) that the battery life dropped like a stone. :/
I'll be trading this for a HTC and avoiding Samsung in the future from now though, thats for sure.
Use Odin and pop on Gingerbread. It's got a massively improved battery life. I just got two days out of mine without a charge and normal use.

Can I use Odin with a phone that doesn't turn on or charge?
Try the three button download mode. That's volume down, Home and Power.

Nope, dont get that. As I said it's as if there isn't even a battery in the phone. No charging icon when plugged into mains or USB, no recovery mode, no looping startup graphic. Nada.
Ah not good at all. Defo needs to go back, sounds like you have had bad luck with yours. Mine has been pretty perfect since I took delivery.

I had no problems at all way back when it was still on Éclair, it's ever since I got the OTA update for Froyo that things started going wonky. :/
It's a pain in the **** to happen today though, I wont be home in time to get in store tomorrow, I cant order a new battery to see if it's just that as with the bank holidays it wont get here till well into next week.... what do you think the chances are of the Vodafone shop being open on good friday?
I suspect they will be open.

Wow, thats... strange.
Cheers for the confirmation though Jenny. ;)
OK, here's a strange/interesting one for you guys:
After flashing every modem, fw and kernal version I had completely given up on my galaxy s GPS. It had to be a hardware fault.
Back when I first got it, it was OK but a few months later became useless. This fix is hardware related and takes only minutes to diagnose and fix.
It's also probably more useful for pre-October models (i9000 international) which had this fault.
I do not take credit for finding out the fix. Credit for that goes to member 'allottios' for bringing it to my attention on another forum topic.
The fix is simple. Remove the back cover and to the right of the speaker is the GPS antenna. It is covered in what looks like some sort of soft plastic tape.
Now open a GPS test app and then apply pressure to the very top of the antenna with your finger. NOT the middle or bottom - that makes it worse.
If, like me your GPS shows instant improvement then you have just worked out your problem.
Simply attach a small piece of double sided tape or similar to the top of the antenna so that when you put the back cover on again their is pressure on that spot.
Will attach some pics later.
Hope you get the same results I did.

I tried it very quickly but it made no difference. I'd like to see if anything comes of it though, a scientific explanation would be great!
Im on darkys 9.5 based off of 2.2.1, going to stay on this until official gingerbread, which is coming very soon!
Erm Gingerbread is official now. Also running Darky's rom on Gingerbread. Very nice and fast.
where do i update to gingerbread then please??
Can do it through Kies if you are on JPY but it may be dependant on your provider.
Have a look here:

Darkys is still a beta for gingerbread, makes me anxious to update to it.
Darkys is still a beta for gingerbread, makes me anxious to update to it.
im on darkys 9.5 and get around 25-28 hours out of it and 3/4 time im listening to music via power amp
i,ve seen people report around 10 hours on the darkys v10
depend if battery is a major issue
Ive done far better on darkys for battery than stock three firmware. I think everyone should wipe battery stats, theres 20%+ extra battery life to be had!
Darky's seems to be a dead end now, development has stopped for the foreseeable future. I get better performance with ROMs from the Romkitchen than I did with Darky's 9.5 (same base). More customisation options as well, so that's what I'd recommend at the moment. Gingerbread still isn't as perfect as the late 2.2.1 ROMs. I'm using JS8 and it's pretty much perfect.
My darky's gingerbread rom isnt great, no Backlight notification, no voodoo sound... I am going to wait till official gingerbread then put on a decent kernel eg speedmod.

Got mine back from Vodafone today, came back with the following:
Firmware version: 2.2.1
Baseband Version: I9000BUJS1
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9
Build Number: FROYO.BUJS3
Is this the latest build of Froyo peeps? Does anyone know when Vodafone are going to release Gingerbread OTA?
Well I have a deodexed Gingerbread Rom with Touchwiz 4 and it's lovely! I also have the S2 live wallpapers.
I decided to go onto Cyanogenmod 7 and it's very, very good, but there are a few shortfalls that mean it's not for everyday use. However, it has heaps more potential than anything else out there right now. If you're happy being a bit of a beta tester, try it out.

whats the battery life like i heard it lasts like 7 hours
whats the battery life like i heard it lasts like 7 hours
I can get 2 days out of it with my normal usage. I usually get 3-4 days on the most battery efficient ROMs (e.g. ROM Kitchen cooked JS8).
They've recently made a lot of improvements so that it's almost ready to be a release imo. You can use it as a daily ROM, it's extremely fast and has lots of nice options, but the battery life is only OK (much better than it was) and the camera is OK (720p recording now working, if a little patchy) as well as no FM Radio (soon to be fixed) and a few other little niggles. Sometimes scrolling isn't that smooth, probably a result of drivers. It's getting better all the time, but it is still an experimental ROM, so keep that in mind and you're set.
Gingerbread is nice though. CM7 uses 2.3.4 as has the overscroll glow, crt lock animation etc, as well as new 2.3.4 features like video calling (still a bit hit and miss) with google talk.
Just updated my phone to Gingerbread as the official one is now ready on most networks. Thought I bricked it at first and Snakey helped me sort it. It was because my phone was previously lagfixed. Honestly love my phone now it's 100 times better :D.

How did yours die? Mine bit the dust a few weeks back, came back from Vodafone claiming it to have been a software problem (the whole phone was taken apart though, there was no building site dust inside it anymore) and touch wood been fine since...
Still no idea when Vodafone are going to roll out Gingerbread.

Got trapped in a car door :(
Gonna try claim through insurance but have no proof or purchase...
Worst comes to worst I'll sell it as spare - these recycling companies are offering around £90 for faulty ones :)
Just popped on 2.3.4. Seems nice, will report quadrant once my restore completes.

Well i'm finally on Gingerbread...
After the whole phone dying debacle I never bothered with kies again. Went to put some music on it but pressed Kies instead of mass storage and it said there was an update available.
I'm only sitting here as i'm waiting for Oblivion to finish downloading (again) so I thought "why not". Fortunately the whole process went smooth as this time.
I'm only what, a year? behind the rest of the world?
Mines still on stock Samsung firmware, but lagfixed, apart from flash support why do I need gingerbread? convince me :D

Mines also stock and NO lagfix as it works fine IMO.
Had it freeze all of twice in 3 months.
I'll wait until official Gingerbread update for Talk Mobile
