Recently I've been receiving complaints from my parents about the speed of their internet browsing. My brother has been having trouble keeping a decent ping whilst playing WoW (World of Warcraft). However I felt unaffected by any problems until I ran a speedtest to check my possible connections speeds. According to various speedtests I'm receiving roughly 6000kbps download and 600kbps upload, this is on a supposedly 11mbit connection.

I have just recently come off the phone with Sky customer services and a lady informed me that I should purchase new line filters and always have the router plugged in at the master socket. Would I stand to gain anything from buying new line filters? I cannot move the router to the master socket however as my desktop is in my room and out of reach without wireless capabilities.

Is there any advice you guys can impart as I'm a bit stuck for another solution and I cannot see the aforementioned problems being that much of a deal. I've had the router in my room for some time now without previous difficulties.

Also, sorry for the essay :)

Forgot to mention my router is a Netgear DG834GT.

hello naz i think the speed you get depends how close you are to the hub. I also wouldnt pay any extra for anything if you are having faults its their job to fix it ,if they dont tell them you are going to leave and they will soon sort it out. i used to use a program called tcp optimizer you should chek it out and give it a blast . hope this helps

Thanks, do you mean the hub as in the router? Or would it be the hub as in their telecom centre?

talking about your telephone exchange distance, sam knows can tell you roughly where your dsl exchange is.

Just so you know if your sync is 11mbps - you should expect to see a maximum throughput of about 10mbps. If running a speedtest gives you "only" 6000kbps (ie 6mbps) then this will usually not been seen as a fault by the ISP, as generally a speed fault will only be that if you are getting less than about 10% of your projected speed (definitely the case on IPStream products, not 100% sure on LLU, but I do know we only guarantee 10% throughput on our LLU products and a 5% guaranteed throughput on IPStream products).

Also a 6mbps speedtest result would not (usually) result in slow web browsing results - as it is hugely more than enough to load the vast majority of webpages quickly (500kbps would be).

I would guess that your parents are having slow web browsing experiences because your brother is playing WOW online at the same time, which is using the bandwidth up.

Also the ISP will insist the router is tested at the master socket before reporting a fault on it as otherwise there is always the possibility your internal wiring is causing the slowdown, this is the same with the filters (although I personally have never seen a microfilter cause slow speeds, only disconnections).
