Hi All

Been a while since i created a thread so thought id get back in to it.

Has anybody ever used blender at all?
http://www.blender.org/

I have slowly been playing with it at work and trying to get to grips with it but have just not had much time with it. Now i am making an effort to learn it a bit better.

What do you peeps think of it? I cant get my head around the control type yet, i have played with maya and cinema 3d and the layouts are very similar but blender seems quite different. I will get there i supose but just taking some time.

A short film was released under creative commerce license and it was all created with blender
http://www.sintel.org/

only about 15 mins long but looks great.

Anyway, anybody ever used blender?

It's something I would love to get into, I had a go maybe 3 years ago, maybe even longer. I remember struggling through some tutorial creating a dolphin. However, because I couldn't master it in a day I chucked it in !

Will have another go though when I get time, just for fun really. Hopefully someone here has some good advice.

Programs like this start off very difficult to understand. I started off using Maya and still prefer Maya to Blender personally. Blender is free but not all that intuitive in my opinion, so I haven't used it all that much. Keep pushing yourself to learn it, because it's only difficult for a short while, then suddenly the learning curve levels out.

Still prefer Maya though. :)

I know what you mean, i tried a while ago at work but other projects have gotten in the way, i really would like to get quite competent at it tho, just watching some tutorials and the guy is rapid with his shortcut keys ect, im like "hold on what was that?"

I have played about with blender but couldn't do much with it. I'll get back into it when I have time.

I introduced my sister to it and she's starting to get quite good.

I have seen sintel and think it looks fantastic. They should upload a HD version.

I do too, just seems easier to use to me, i have a free copy of maya for 12 months but want to learn a bit of blender too (as its free)

I use to study Blender Open Source in School - I managed to achieve many great things with it - i'll try dig some of it up & Post what i managed to create :)

Also have 3DS Max & Maya however the UI seems far more complex - so will require some time xD

Saw this linked to a few days ago, should probably give it a watch... i did 'try out' Blender a while back but couldn't do much due to some dependency problems. Should be able to get your head round it if you want to, it's just not that intuitive. Definitely not impossible to use however.

This is the very first model I ever made, purely to learn the most basic of modelling techniques and an introduction to the Hypershade. I had never heard of Mental Ray when I made this, and only knew how to extrude, scale, move and rotate objects. Also revolving curves for the legs and a boolean difference to make the pockets.
