View Full Version : MSI P35 NEO2-FR boot problem
Hi all,
I have :
MSI P35 NEO2-FR
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz 95W G0 Stepping
Patriot 2GB PC2-6400 C4 Extreme Performance (2x1GB)
OCZ 600W StealthXStream PSU
My problem is that when I power on the power comes on for about 5 seconds with lights, fans, drives whirring and spinning etc.
Then the power dies for 3 seconds as if its shut off.
Then it all powers up on its own ok and runs fine.
Although I could probably live with this I dont think my hard drive will last long.
I have tried a 800w psu and swapped the graphics card but I still get the same problem.
Anyone had simular problem or got any ideas?
Thanks
Seems more and more people seem to get this problem.
Best bet is to try a diffrent PSU. If you have a spare one hanging around connect it up and take the other one out and see what happens.
This problem can be to do with a load of reasons to be honest with you. Its like a game of cat and mouse, you have to keep eliminating possible causes IE take one stick of memory out, if it still doesnt work put that back in and take the other out etc...

Might be nothing to worry about, my gaming rig does that if i remove the power completely as its overclocked quite heavily, leave the mains in and the psu switched on and it powers up fine. Are you overclocked at all? If so does it do it at stock? Latest bios etc?
Welcome to the forum too btw. :D
Thanks for the replies.
Ive tried a 800w psu and that gives the exact same issue.
The only thing I got left to try is the RAM.
Il give that a go tomorrow and update you.
Thanks for the welcome :)
MSI have shafted me this week with rubbish parts they use on there MB.
Go and buy an Asus and be problem free:twisted:
Same board, same problem. I have tried 3 different power supplies and they all exhibit the same behavior. I am still putting the system together so everything is stock speeds, no overclocking. Found this on google groups about this problem:
"MSI tech support said via email this is Windows ACPI something or other. However, this happens with no drives attached. I am trying to call them now"
and:
"I contacted their technical support and they said that this is normal. Still it seems strange to me."
If MSI is saying this is normal and/or blaming windows ACPI they are full of ****. I don't even have any drives installed and this is happening. This is NOT normal. They need to come up with a better answer than that :/
This is usually caused by having incorrect FSB and Multiplier in the Bios. Use the correct setting as per you CPU and it should stop happening. :)
Thanks
I accept Paypal.
I had a similar problem with my board... Now it won't post at all. The LEDs are telling me that there is a problem with the RAM. Basically when I turn it on all LEDs light up red (which means problem with the CPU) it hangs up and restarts, then gets stuck (ie. fans going etc but no post) with green, green, red, green LEDs showing (prob with RAM). V. annoying! I did get it to post once and changed the CPU frequency to 210mhz rather than 200mhz, which boosted the Ram to 840mhz (this was the systems setting as the RAM freqency was set to auto). I have a feeling somethings fried on the board as I've tried other RAM to no avail (also PC 6400). Any ideas? I'm fairly new to this so probably shouldn't have been messing with the CPU freq...
if you have fried your motherboard then you have VOID the warrenty and wont be able to get your money back or a replacment.
I'm aware of that Micky, I was asking the question whether or not that is the likely problem and whether there is a solution. I've reset the CMOS, changed the ram and I know the cpu and graphics card work so I am guessing it's the mobo but everything looks fine and nothing has overheated.
Maybe the ram isnt getting enough voltage, so wont work?
Try booting without the memory fitted, it should beep / show a different error on the display. If it does show a memory error the mobo could very well be ok.
What memory is this second set you are trying?
Hi there! one of my first posts here! Hi im Umar nice to meet you all!
I built this exact rig a month and a bit ago for myself, and its a very simple fix!
It is simply the RAM. It is on high performance Ram which the mobo is not set to and so cannot boot with! The way i fixed it is by getting a stick of ddr2-667 and booting with that! It booted up fine! The original settings were 5-5-5-15@1.8v which i changed to 4-4-4-12 @2.1v. Put the original ram in and it boots up fine! :)
The thing with the powering off, thats normal for the MSI Neo2FR. It has some sort of dual booting system. It only does this however after it has been unplugged from the mains. So on first boot up after being plugged in it will do it, but after that it should not!
Thanks
Umar!
Also, i think the led error you are getting is GREEN GREEN RED GREEN correct? ( i remembered this off the top of my head so appologies if ive got this wrong!) ANd in the manual it says this is a RAM error. :) See above :) As for starting of as all red, that is normal too, it does not mean your cpu is fried! its simply the mobo starting up and ticking off all the parts as it checks them :)

This issue is fixed on the later bios, 1.5 and above doesn't have this issue.
ALL STOP PANICKING - its normal. all the p35 and x38 boards (of which i have one) do it. they power up, do a self test and if they need to they shut down and do more tests. they all do it.
The system needs to restart first in order to initialize the current CPU and memory clock, which explains why it reboots after power on. I have the same board and the problem was fixed with the 1.8 BIOS.
