View Full Version : Virgin Media 50Mb...is it worth it?

Hey guys.

I just decided(actually it happened at the beginning) to cancel my sky subscription, as the speed was ru***sh.
So, me and my wife decided to go for VM 50mb + Tv XL + basic landline and 2 V+ HD boxes.

My question is about the internet....is it worth it over the 20mb one?
I know that the 20mb is throttled during peak hours( i had VM for 3 years before this endless year with sky), but still.....

I would say so, no throttling would be nice.

Then again, the fastest broadband I've had is mine at 6Mb.

I dont find my my 20mb is throttled at anytime unless i hit the Traffic management limits. If you dont download vast quantities or need to upload lots of stuff i would just go for 20mb

its never just me laggy in games, by this i mean if the server is good, my connection is always good

VM pride themselves on delivering as close to 50mbps as possible which finds over 60% of customers achieving 45mbps+

Is it worth the money = yes, could you use those speeds without being reckless = yes, should you look into buying it = yes :D

Thanks a lot guys.

I`m not an avid downloader (actually not much at all), but I do play loads of games and we do have most of our work done online(research, documents, uploads), . So we could really use this.
But the most important factor that lead me to try and go for 50Mb, was the fact that I never achieved bandwidth higher than 5Mb with Sky, although I`m paying for 20Mb.
Now, I know is "up to", whereas the years before, with 20Mb from VM I was hitting 19Mb most of the time.
It is very frustrating when you have a deadline and have to upload and download in the same time, big pdfs, powerpoints, pictures, clips, etc and your internet connection feels like stone age.....:censored:

So I should really go for it?

50Mbit has NO throttling and NO download limit, we have it at work.

Yup the 50mb is not included in the traffic management. download as much as you want when you want same goes for uploads.

20Mb is ok if you only download of a night as there are limits for day times

10am - 3pm 7000MB ...4pm - 9pm 3500MB reach these limits and you speed of your line is limited for 5 hours by 75%.

if your going to join you would want to haggle hehe but personally i think virgins 50MB is about the best you can get but i think skys tv package have more HD to offer

We really don`t have much free time for TV anymore. I`ve choose the XL package for the documentary channels more than anything and V+ box for the ability to record. (I can`t be bothered to set up my pc next to the tv again). I know, I`m lazy.:P

Anyway, I really really thank you guys, you helped me making my mind up.

Me too.


Mate of mine has 50mb and he gets 6000KB/s+ consistant download any time of day. For the extra few £ a month it costs its well worth it, apparently. Also i believe the contention ratio is half that of all the other options.

+1, i'd definatly recommend the 50mbit. check out my thread on 10mbit speed problems. i'm actually on 20mbit atm.

We currently have Virgin Media 50mb, the bandwidth is immense. I'd say it's worth it.

Unless you download more than 2Gb between 8 in the morning and 10 at night, then you may as well stick with the 10 meg service and save some money. I have the 10 meg service and its fine

I went from the 20mb to the 50mb and the difference gaming is noticeably better.

well worth it if you use it.

I went 50Mb from 20Mb and when the contract ended i choose to down back to 20Mb. I rarely go over the limit, and if i do its probably from downloading a game or something from steam, in which case im occupied with the game and not worrying about the internet.

20Mb does me fine, all depends on how much you download really. Although i will probably try and get 50Mb on a rolling contract for the winter when i download more, then go back to 20 during the summer.

Peaktimes i get anywhere from 18+ down and 600+ up. Offpeak i usually get a guaranteed 19, sometimes even topping just over the 20Mb/s mark. Upload on offpeak goes anywhere from 600-700Kb/s.

I did notice that you're connecting to two different servers there though, that could explain the anomoly

We have a load of consoles & PC's all on ours & the 50MB service is brilliant at handling it......mind you the router the give you is pap.

50Mb service is spot on constant 50Mb for me, and the lines are good for over a 100Mb

Actually the lines can do GBps :D, but your sharing with TV service which eats large chunk of the available bandwidth :p

yeah that was my point I know the lines are good for well over what they're currently used for and the optic part of the network (upto the CAB) is using optic fiber and is good for stupid speeds

but am not sure what the line into the house is good for with it being
coaxial I know its 200mb upwards for sure
