anyone like a nice game of chess?

1. WOPR would be found in NORAD base I think
2. David does, with a backdoor password that was the creators sons name, that the computer assumes as his name later on.
3. Cool because it had very anti nuclear undertones, with the WINNER: NONE when the computer plays noughts and crosses against itself :)

In the film Wargames

Matthew Broderick played David Lightman

He used a IMSAI 8080.

It was cool as it pretty much opened up the world of hacking, also when he uses a ring pull to obtain free ohone calls it was proven to actually work.

2. David Lightman (Matthew Broderick), and he did it with an IMSAI 8080 microcomputer (and proper old school phone modem - awesome).

3. Sod the anti nuclear arms messages - the obvious cool thing was that it showed that hackers can have cred and a genuine shot at Ally Sheedy :D

This is perhaps the film of my childhood!

WOPR was the supercomputer in the 1983 film WarGames, found within N.O.R.A.D located at Peterson Air Force Base in the Cheyenne Mountains. It was hacked by Matthew Broderick/David Lightman on an old IMSAI 8080 as he wanted to find out more about the 'Global Thermonuclear War' simulation program.

Why was it cool? Two reasons:

1) Because it gave us Ferris Bueller
2) WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY A GAME?

Its the mainframe at NORAD in film Wargames
David Lightman on a IMSAI 8080
Showed that the enlightened mind understands the futility of war. Also brought AI into the mainstream consciousness and the dangers therein of utilising it.

1.WOPR from the film "Wargames"
2. Mattew Brodericks character David Lightman hacked it using an Imsai 8080

Wargames Rules:

David Lightman (Broderick) used a IMSAI 8080 to hack into WOPR @ NORAD (Cheyenne mountain).

They battled it out with tic tac toe, which in my opinion should be used to resolve all political issues between countries :)

It was cool because it made it chic to be geek

1) War Operation Plan Response was housed at NORAD
2) Matthew Broderick playing David Lightman hacked into it using a IMSAI Micro Computer and pulse dialling modem (anyone else remember those ?) using the password "Joshua"
3) It was cool because it demonstrated that so long as you could hack computers you could flunk school and still get good grades :D

Excellent Question and I only watched this a couple of weeks ago :)

The WOPR (War Operation Plan Response) was a "supercomputer" based at Norad (Cheyenne Mountain) in the film Wargames (I loved the fact it showed it was doing calculations by changing which of its lights were lit :))

David Lightman played by Matthew Broderick hacked into it using an IMSAI 8080 connected to an IMSAI 212A modem via an acoustic coupler.

This movie was cool because it had a remote control Terradactyl in it :)

1. Where would you find the WOPR?
2. Who hacked into it and with what computer?
3. The tie breaker.. Why was this film cool? :D

1. in the film wargames, in norad the military super computer nuclear base
2.david lightman (matthew broderick) hacked into it using an ISAI 8080 microcomputer from the 80s
3. it was great because it latched onto the fact that hacking had become something that was cool and before that it had never really been heard of. this was a time when a crude form of the internet was just being used and haden't been around long and it showed what could be done with it, be it good and bad. obviously they hadn't really devoloped security enough because hacking wasn't a common thing and gave you something to think about, if a hacker could have really done that it would have been scary. it was also cool because when i watched it i was just a kid and computers were just starting to impliment games, people started buying systems just for the games and computers like the atari, commodore and spectrum started coming out basically to run games on. where would we be today without those things happening. anyway it was a great film about computers and what they can do at a time when people didn't know much about them.:)

1. Where would you find the WOPR?

In the film WarGames (and the sequel) at NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) in the Cheyenne Mountain. It stood for War Operation Plan Response and was an AI that could calculate the best response strategy to an attack on the US.

2. Who hacked into it and with what computer?

David Lightman (played by Matthew Broderick) accidentally hacks into the computer on a quest to find the latest games before they are released in the shops. He correctly guesses the password as the author's dead son's name (with help from some other people) and proceeds to play the 'games'.
He did all this using a IMSAI 8080 and a modem set to dial every phone number in the area to find games.

3. The tie breaker.. Why was this film cool? :D

The film was cool because it had a young lad hacking into one of the USA's top secret facilities by accident with fairly normal computer gear and causing the government loads of hassle. That added to the fact that it showed that the result of a nuclear war would provide no winners and was released around when there were high tensions with regards to nuclear wars.
It was also cool as it made all young people interested in computers think that they too could be a world class hacker.

WOPR - Norad Cheyenne mountain
David Lightman (mathew Broderick in the movie wargames)
film was cool for many reasons:

brought hacking into the mainstream (not 'hackers' as most ppl say that was 12 years later)

the ringpull free phone calls - think this was proved afterwards too.

in 2008 the giant that is google held a 25th anniversiary screening. gotta love it when

2.David Lightman (acted by matthew broderick) using his imsai microcomputer.

2. David Lightman (Broderick) used IMSAI 8080 to hack into WOPR

3. WarGames was cool because it was probably the first film to feature a geek who saved the day. and also, the list of games displayed when it had been hacked were really funny (Chess, etc, then Thermal Nuclear War, if i remembered correctly) very well disguised.

1. The WOPR supercomputer is based in NORAD at Cheyenne Mountain.

2. Wargames main charachter David Lightman hacked into it using an IMSAI Microcomputer

3. It was cool for numerous reasons, first popular hacking movie, awesome wall of monitors at NORAD, mega Noughts and Crosses, etc. My fave though is that WOPR is like a short version of whopper, and the super computer was both massive and a bit of a tool (whopper is slang for chaz muppet round my way).

a) The "Whopper" :) is the made-up computer in WarGames, located in NORAD at Cheyenne Mountain, USA.
b) David Lightman (played by Matthew Broderick) hacked into the supercomputer using a IMSAI 8080
c) It was cool because it showed that computers could be something interesting, apart from probably gestating a full generation of hackers! My parents also bought me my first computer after we watched it, a Philips 8086 with 768KB of Ram, so I have really good memories of it.

In the film Wargames

Matthew Broderick playing "David Lightman"

He used a IMSAI 8080, which had less cpu horsepower than a Furby.

Why was it cool?? maybe I am the only person here old enough to remember, but the film proved very prophetic. Not long after it's release the US "lost" a multi million $ spy satellite.
When they "found" it, it was many miles off course and being used by 2 teenage kids for free phone calls from Europe (where the one lived), to the US (where the other lived).
And they did it all with a cheap and nasty Tandy TRS computer with a measly few kB of RAM.

2. Mathew Broderick who played David Lightman in the movie WarGames used a IMSAI computer to hack into it
3. This film showed a generation of kids that computers were cool.
Even today the USA still can't stop someone hacking into their top security systems.
It shows that no matter how sophisticated the software is, there is always a loophole in the program.
I would just like to make it clear that I am NOT, NOR have I ever been a hacker :ninja:

3. The tie breaker.. Why was this film cool? :D
For a start it had a giant computer built by NORAD themselves, yet it managed to fool all of them into thinking that there really was a Global Thermonuclear War. Not to mention it made "hacking" as a concept a lot more mainstream and opened the way for other cult classics like "Hackers" itself.
