View Full Version : Im starting an android app today!
Im spending my free time building an android app from today. I love android and im full of ideas and enthusiasm about building an app.
im literally at step one
ive had the tools for a while but only used them to root phones and stuff ive never coded before except databases oh and ms access tools..
I dont even know what app im going to make.. the obvious one for me would be a game like angry birds or plants vrs zombies.. but im half in the mind to make a business orientated app.
has anyone made an android app before?
anyone fancy a go too ?
does aria have an android app ?? do you want one :P ??
ill see how it goes, wish me luck..
Best of luck Senty - I love android apps, and I admire you for giving it a go - keep us updated as to how it progresses
thanks dood its going to be a rough road :) but i just had some inspiration for an idea for the app but ill keep it a secret for now.. but its an APP not a game. so that's the first big decision made the game or app decision.. my life long best m8 is a video games design teacher so that probably helped me decide away from his skillset..
basically all the tools are free to develop for android
and are here http://developer.android.com/index.html
plan for today is watch the developer video http://developer.android.com/videos/index.html
and just makes notes on my app and the ideas i have for features etc.. spam the aria forum etc..
i want to cram my brain with lots of learning today but not too much the basic plan is to learn as i go..
making an android app is free and costs you only time..

I can't decide between doing an android app, WP7 or even iPhone (most likely to actually make some money out of it)
WP7 is silverlight and C# which i sort of already know,
android is Java/C++, C++ i know and java i don't but is similar
iPhone is Objective-C which I'm getting to know...
If you want to do a game, check out http://replicaisland.blogspot.com/ replica island is open source and made by someone at google, and there are loads of other games that are based on the source of replica island. but beware, if you haven't done any app coding before, a game is a BIG BIG task. not only does the code have to be robust, but the graphics and sound need to be good too. there are resources for free to use graphics and sound/music, but they are few and far between.
check out http://stackoverflow.com for programming help and http://gamedev.stackexchange.com for game specific help (also the classic http://www.gamedev.net

thanks for the good advice i no doubt will need help although my first app will be simple the next one will be deeper :)
have you though about using XNA?
Subscribed to this thread too - keen to see how it progresses Senty!
How about an app/widget which updates live on screen how many coffee shops are in a 5 mile radius? and then sat navs you to your preferred choice?
google made "places directory"- brilliant app if i made anything half as good as google places directory id be amazed.. it does petrol stations too. hmm but a widget that is on the desktop that just point to the nearest coffee
i wonder if i can make a widget from an existing app that isnt mine! there is a chance...
make one for my ipod touch where when i shake it girls boobs jiggle?
not a bad idea actually im making an android app wouldnt touch apple but shaking boobs would be easy and id get rich quick!
make one for my ipod anyway.
I got my 32GB free of my lil sis, its actually quite good, i'm using it lots.
ok found some more tutorials infact a whole site full of them called
http://www.helloandroid.com/tutorials also got loads of videos from google from io speeches etc.. to catch up so ill spend a lot of today just learning the basics i need to get started :) and trying to to watch the f1...

have you though about using XNA?
if doing WP7 games the only option is XNA (which is just DirectX in C# for XBLA, zune and now WP7) and all normal app stuff in WP7 is silverlight, so again, C#

As Senty is is doing android, I'll do the iOS app you request :)
but i won't be able to put it in the app store (probably) so either you'll have to jailbreak, or you'll have to be one of my official beta testers ;)
how about an app to show all bluetooth devices within range, and an instant messanging option.
Call it "BlueChat"

I want to use google app inventor but its a closed beta at the moment! ive applied and im an experienced beta tester so there is a good chance but im stook now. i can carry on learnign but i dont want to start until ive got a copy of app inventor..
ive got a torrent of it for umbuntu but i want windows 7 LOL
oh happy days
but how easy is that app inventor program! and in the video he says you get a reply and access in less than a week!
this hak5 episodes shows it best
http://revision3.com/hak5/hak5-802
and here is a playlist of videos on learning to use app inventor http://www.youtube.com/user/timlaytonsr#grid/user/6657BF118614C3A2
Good luck fella, if you want someone to test anything I have a rooted Desire HD Android running on a WinMo 6.5 HTC HD2 and a Jailbroken 3G Iphone.
haha thats a great set of phones! thanks fo rthe offer but ot only have i got the Nexus One from google you get an emulator in the SDK for each version of android! I can write the app and it appears on my phone in the dock as i write it and i can test it whenever.. well im still on the hello world one but its a start and i can learn the eclipse tools thingy whilst waiting for the access to the google app inventor beta that i want to use..
im fed up of watching tutorial videos already and ive spent all morning installing and watching and these tools are not east to install you would thin app developer making tool developers could manage an installer!
when i get that for though ill send you the apk for your desire but all the important parts are identicle to the nexus there is little point :)

actually it's just a barrier to entry... keep the stupidheads out ;)
i plan on this aswell.. :D
we've just started Java programming at school in AS Computing, so i guess this can be my little side project to help me learn more :)
WOOHOO progress
ill show you in a bit but i got started today
gtg bbl
OK google finally approved my application for the appinventor beta today so ive had a blast at making an easy app. its basically shows graphics and plays sounds when you press a button its for in the pub when i cant shout... its for communicating in a noisey pub AND it also gives girls marks out of ten as they walk past :)
anyway here are the pictures to show you how easy it is ...
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/6348/androidblockter.jpg
this is the block editor. its really easy even for a noob like me to make the buttons do the things you want i did all this in 3 hours from getting it.
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/2293/appinventor.jpg
this is the actual app inventor its use for the layout and graphics and buttons its not that brilliant tbh its pretty hard to get the buttons where you want, it like wrapping is on and cant be turned off and you have to mess about a lot but thats probably me being a noob.
http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/1372/androidemulator.jpg
finally this is the emulator that shows the app in real time as you build it this is pretty cool tbh! It emulates any android device and version but its the realtime editing that is so cool
the second you change something in your app its changed on this and you can test it. you can send it to your actual phone too but ill wait till its nearly finished before that..
anyway7 thats how far i got in 3 hours
and i didnt type a single line of code nor could I.
google has made is so easy to make android apps its so easy

good stuff!
I've downloaded the sdk, jdk and eclipse. if i do anything with it, it will be the hard way ;)
I did all that and you only need the SDK and apply for app inventor
I think eclipse is when you know what your doing :) so ill use that for the second app
but its dead easy, ive never done any coding i can potter with html and im mean at access databases but its all gui based like this
give it a go! the worst that can happen is you just make yourself some apps.

How long ago did you apply?
Iv been waiting about 4 months.. ;(
3 weeks :) i was told it took 2 weeks and was a bit nervous..
im a proper google fanboy though i have beta tested everything they made and bought the phone and the t-shirt, maybe you bought some apple products or something..
try applying again or check your spam box for an email from noreplyappinventor@google.com
Im going through the tutorials on the app inventor site they are brilliant.
http://appinventor.googlelabs.com/learn/tutorials/ << find them here
Ive made a wack-a-mole game and changed it so its gets faster when your score gets higher..
now im on to the advanced im building a quiz machine app, it takes no time at all with the tutorials telling you how to do each step..
if you want a money making app the make an avi/mpeg player like vlc there isnt one at the moe most of them are just remote players
I wouldnt want to get in to all teh copyright tbh and ther is arcmedia player http://www.appbrain.com/app/arcmedia/sns.arcMedia.playerInterface.arm6 which is good
but the browser plays those files doesnt it ? or the youtube app ? and best tube which i use daily, im not 100% but i think the default apps do it already and thats why there are no big company players... I could of sworn there was vlc .. im losing it!

I will never buy a Apple product ;P Well that iPod didn't count <Got eat buy dog! > HAHAHA
Keep strong jackster ! it only takes one moment of weakness :)
Looking good, i may apply for the App Inventor and have a tinker!
