Does anyone know if the price cut will take effect on Aria on the 24th? Or is it going to be a gradual drop to that price over a number of weeks?

Are we talking an Athlon 3800 for £70? Athlon X2 3800 for £130?

I've heard the prices are going to have an instant drop.

Time for me to get an X2 8)

That's too much of a bargain. RIGHT when I want to order too. I can't not get an X2 or at least a top end single core. Frustration...

OK I've been doing some calculations:

Athlon X2 Socket 939 at 30% cut (inc 1MB cache models) - (We should at least see these reductions)

X2 3800 - £132 - £56 cut
X2 4200 - £166 - £71 cut
X2 4400 - £210 - £90 cut
X2 4600 - £254 - £109 cut
X2 4800 - £284 - £122 cut

Athlon X2 Socket 939 at 35% cut (inc 1MB cache models) -

X2 3800 - £122 - £60 cut
X2 4200 - £154 - £83 cut
X2 4400 - £195 - £105 cut
X2 4600 - £236 - £127 cut
X2 4800 - £264 - £142 cut

Athlon X2 Socket 939 at 40% cut (inc 1MB cache models) -

X2 3800 - £113 - £75 cut
X2 4200 - £142 - £95 cut
X2 4400 - £180 - £120 cut
X2 4600 - £218 - £145 cut
X2 4800 - £243 - £163 cut

Apparently the highest priced processors will have the largest reductions. If so, you could expect to see:

X2 3800 - £132 - £56 cut
X2 4200 - £160 - £77 cut at 32.5%
X2 4400 - £195 - £105 cut
X2 4600 - £227 - £136 cut at 37.5%
X2 4800 - £243 - £163 cut

With non-1MB cache models and a scalable reduction as above:

X2 3800 - £132 - £56 cut
X2 4200 - £154 - £83 cut
X2 4600 - £218 - £145 cut

I've included prices for the 1MB cache models because there is conflicting information about whether or not the 1MB cache processors are going to be included in the price drop. As far as I'm aware, processors are no longer having a 50% max. price drop, but are now having a max. drop of 40%. As for Athlon 64's, I'm not sure but people are mainly going to be interested in the X2's, especially at such competetive prices.

*Note: If AMD do include the 1MB cache processors in the reduction then the Athlon X2 4800 has the potential to drop to around the same price as a current X2 4200!

Well Well... You guys are on the ball!!

It's true - there will be some substantial price slashing on 24th!

So far I can't prize any definate drops from the Purchasers, all they will tell me is that there is one definate huge drop...

I'll keep working on them though and see what i can find out :D

Well that's how it's always going to be. But there are certain points in the roadmap like these where it really is just right to upgrade your system. The only thing is I want my system within 2 weeks so really Dual-Core is still a no go. I guess you could say we don't need it just yet, but at the end of the year and definitely leading into next year, it would be wise to invest in that technology or you could upgrade to a high spec single core now and go quad-core later next year. I myself, should be building using single core tech for the moment.

Currently an Athlon 3800 is £95. I was planning on getting an Athlon 3500. The choice now for me is whether to get the 3800 which most probably will drop nearer to the current 3500 price, or still get a 3500 and save the extra. In my situation, every £ counts and for the next year or so I don't doubt that a 3200 would be sufficient! Decisions, decisions. Monday can't come quick enough, so that I can make my bloody mind up.

can you have the FX 60 for £10??

or is that asking too much

Mikey_s2003

yes it was just read the article

\"*The Athlon 64 FX model line will not receive any price reduction*\"
damm

although an X2 4800 does look tempting if it's included in the price slash

Gregoroth - Your estimates are good but not all that accurate, at least that's what the Purchasers are telling me!! :D

Nothing better than seeing AMD lower their prices. I wouldn't touch Intel with a barge pole, so works out nicely for me! :D

For now you might not, but when Conroe is in full swing you will.

Still, Intels chips are going to be top price for a long time. AMD will still retain their market. Yes, it looks like it will drop, but AMD have quad-core's on the roadmap for next year don't they? Either way, you end up getting the great tech, then every so often the other company takes the lead and it just cycles round. That's natural progression. As of now, only the enthusiasts will take to Conroe until that then drops in price. You're always going to have the sub sectors of gamers, budgeters etc.

Many people forget, that it is a very small percentage of the population that have real high end spec gear but you always feel under pressure that you're completely behind and wasting your money going the 'budget' route because most of the gamers and the like go onto to forums on the net boasting about the ridiculously expensive pc's they've just got (probably on credit lol). You think most people have high end rigs and your trailing but in reality it's the complete opposite. I bet the majority of users have pc's around the 2Ghz bracket and will continue to do so for a while to come.

I've heard of people doing that, but you can't honestly say that's a substantial portion of the cpu market. The overclocking scene is getting more popular, especially with AMD, but I really doubt that is more than 5-10% of people who own a computer. I briefly read a guide to overclocking and I thought f*ck it, I haven't got the time, nor the money to risk doing that. I assume the majority of people would think the same. As far as I'm concerned, overclocking is an enthusiasts hobby. If I buy a processor, I expect it to work how it was intended to from the box. I reckon you've got a few thousand people worldwide who would have an overclocked Opteron. That's not many people.

Doesn't the FX series have extra extensions? Or a different architecture? There's a reason that they cost over £500. In my opinion, it is a complete waste of money. Currently, an athlon 3000 and an X1800XL+ graphics card can play 'next gen' games at high settings. That's £250 right there. Sure you will need a newer processor at the end of this year, leading into next year to play them at highest settings (demanding physics) but that's not much extra. The high end gaming market, playing games at absolutely full out brutal frame rates, isn't as big as you think.
