View Full Version : Sata Power Splitter
My PSU (Corsair 520HX) only has 4 SATA connectors. I currently use 2 for HDDs and 2 for ODDs. I am adding an SSD (my Vertex 2E arrived today) and in the past when I have needed a 5th SATA power connector I have used a molex to Sata convertor, however I am now thinking of using a Sata Y cable - so I can plug one Sata power connector into it and get two connectors from the one. I would then connect these to my ODDs and the other (now spare) one to my SSD.
Has anyone used these before and would they be okay or should I stick with the molex to sata cable?

You could always make your own. They're easy enough to make although you'd have to wait for delivery and depending on how you do it, you could also void your warranty with Corsair.

It costs like £2.50 - Id rather not risk making my own.

It's easy enough mate. Fair enough though.
I think the Molex to SATA is fine. The only thing it doesn't have is the 5th, orange cable which isn't required.
odd will probably not use 3.3V (orange)
grab a molex to 2* sata power and just run a a molex to the drives.

The reason I want to use a sata power splitter is that I have a small case and where the current 2 sata cable runs to will be having the third device put, so it makes sense to just branch off at this last point rather than trying to run a different modular cable there as well.
just picked up a molex to 2 * sata... and noticed they do a single molex to 4 * sata too for about £7 or £8. This was at a well known chain of electrical parts outlets.

My LSI RAiD cards have 1 plug for each set of 4 plugs/drives there is no problem as long as you have a good PSU that can power them
...and you have, mine are on HX620's.
Cant VOID warrenty by modding the modular cables, they dont want them when you RMA

Well if you check the Corsair forums from about 4/5 years back you will see me asking about such and being told that it does and will void the warranty.
Why bother ?

Maybe 4/5 years ago, but not now. I just got a free modular sata cable from them the other week just for asking for one.
I'd just stick with the Molex splitter if I were you, cheap and cheerful and it does the trick.
Or ask corsair for some more connectors for it. they did for me at no charge (Took them 3 weeks though)

LOL I forgot I actually asked them about a year ago for for an extra SATA connector and they sent me a 4 way one (this was when I had my CM690), unfortunately it was slightly defective (not very safe looking) and so I didnt use it. Took about 3 weeks then as well if I remember rightly.
The splitter I got works out perfect actually because the SSD and ODDs are going to be on opposite sides of the case and so the 15cm length actually makes it perfect for my needs.
Should be doing the rebuild over the weekend as my heatsink is being delivered tomorrow.
