View Full Version : A few Windows 7 problems
I've done nearly 30 builds over the past few months, all of which are running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 and 64-bit versions. Most are fine, but there are a couple of recurring problems which I can't seem to get to the bottom of.
First, on some of them when they're running Excel 2007 and the user clicks on a file or the shortcut to a file the app opens but the file doesn't, and the user gets the message "There was a problem sending the command to the program". Clicking again loads the file without any problems. I've googled this extensively, and tried all the fixes, but none of them work. This seems to be quite a common Vista/W7 problem, and I'm seeing it on probably 20% of the installations I've done.
Secondly, sometimes clicking the mouse on any open app or website or document causes the screen to flicker momentarily, sometimes it takes 2 or 3 clicks before the action is recognised. Again, this seems to be a peculiar Windows 7 problem, googling it isn't much help as it's fairly common but none of the fixes I've tried seem to work. I'm wondering if certain chipsets don't work too well with Windows 7/AMD processors (although I've also had it on one build with an Intel dual-core processor)
Any advice welcomed.
Sorry I have not experienced any of those issues in many many installs.

my initial instinct was the program wasnt installed properly but after hearing that this is common to you id wonder about your hardware. Ive never had anything like that and i beta test the office products. ID think about hardware or your copy of windows 7 is damaged but im pretty sure thats not an office problem..

hmm these two things are related IMO and id say there is a hardware fault or if your lucky just a driver or bios issue. look at which motherboard it is what CPU and see if there is a pattern... are these business machines? Ive installed a LOT of w7 builds and not had any of these issues so it must be something specific to your set ups.
its a wierd problem but its solvable..
Thanks for the replies. May well be a specific problem, most of my builds are for office workstations, and I tend to use AMD processors. The "there was a problem sending the command to the program" is a pretty common one, just googling it gives thousands of hits, hasn't been solved for ;ots of people.
I've been building PC's commercially for around 9 years now, probably done in excess of 300 workstations, but I've only had these problems with Windows 7 Ultimate and with Office 2007/2010 beta.
TBH both Win 7 and Office 2010 are quite video GPU intensive or "pretty" as my son says... This obviously puts quite a strain on the GPU and may be causing the GPU to glitch.
Possible solution is to check/update graphics drivers etc.
ive had the one where you have to click a few time to get something to respond happens for me right after start up
thankfully it dosent seem to have come back as i reinstalled fresh last week
Yes, I'm beginning to think a reinstall may be necessary.
I have seen that same problem with Excel on on my office machine running XP and Office 2010 Technical Preview so I would think it's more of a problem with Excel and less of a Windows 7 problem. As for the flickering screen etc, I would try updating your display driver but also update your usb controller driver if possible. I found that, for most machines, the built in driver in windows 7 is fine but occasionally I got a better response from the motherboard manufacturer's driver.
