My brother is thinking of getting a new graphics card and has up to £275 to spend.

I being an ATI man have said to go 5850 but he seems to want a EVGA GTX 470 so what is it to be ?

He will not be doing SLI or Crossfire.
Oh and the PSU is not an issue !

Thanks everyone for your kind help :)

5850 is fine if he knows how to overclock can be clocked to 5870 speeds obviously lacking some rops and what not though.

if he wants evga tell him to get a 460 1gb

speaking of which has anyone seen the new GTX460 by ECS? It is nearly as good as the MSI hawk and cheaper to boot!

EDIT lads have a butchers at this link

I am shocked that ECS have done this, but as I have said before something needs to fill the void left by DFI and Abit. Ill speak to Jimmy Su at dfi if he comes on msn (should be within the next 2 hours) I still have this nasty suspicion that some ex-dfi employees may have gone over to ECS.

470 is quicker than 5850 but slower than a 5870 marginely the main issue is they are very hot and have very large power consumption, 5870 all the way

gilgamesh them 460's look pretty snazzy!
2 x 460's is my next upgrade, after my bank account has stabalized from my very recent i7 purchase haha

gilgamesh

they certainly do!

my current choice for motherboard 2 on my system build are

either an MSI hawk or two of these babies.......the zotac ones look good also

only thing is if you buy the ones with different heatsink cooling and later you want to add a water block... you cant:(

KickButt
23-09-10, 01:07
you cant just strip it to the pcb? which ones are you talking about? the msi, or the zotac or the ECS one?

gilgamesh
23-09-10, 01:09
yes you can strip then to the pcb
but when you buy a water block (third party) such as XSPC, they tend to only fit the reference boards only! When they add t heir own cooling method they change the board layout slightly.

edit

if you buy a gpu card with non reference cooling MAKE sure that you want to air cool it forever otherwise a full cover wc block is impossible to get to fit (unless you are lucky enough to have one custom made)

KickButt
23-09-10, 01:11
ah so the blocks are designed to be fitted easier but in doing so if the reference design is slightly different they won't fit.. bummer! will take this into consideration when buying my graphics cards as plan to build a W/C loop at some point when i have got all my hardware

gilgamesh
23-09-10, 01:13
let me know when u build a wc loop mate

KickButt
23-09-10, 01:21
will do! :D thanks! always handy to have a pro on the other end ;)
i actually have some wc bits already i picked up from a scrapped build the other day.. let me just go check what it is.. will post up some pics of them 2moro if i remember to
