Hi guys

I have a PC the Windows disk wont boot on, It will boot a Linux disc - though only with noapci and acpi=off.

Is there any way I can make the windows disc behave similarly ?

Thanks

Is it a genuine disk or a copy? Should just boot as long as it's XP or greater.

Whats the spec of the PC?

Preferably the HDD and motherboard.

Is it a DVD drive?

Removed competitors link

Its that PC

Its a Copied version - But is real - Obtained though microsoft M something (forgot the abbreviation).

The Hard drive mounts in Linux no probs and i was able to back everything up.

This is what happens

Put CD in - Boot from it

Press any key to boot from DVD/CD

Loading (with the white bar)

Loading with the green bar

Freeze.

On linux Without the two commands i mentioned in the first post it freezes at after it extracts the kernel.

memtest86+ confirms memory is OK - No errors.
Cleared CMOS and set optimised - Same
Set fail-safe - get the same

Any more ideas ?

I suggest you obtain genuine media or burn the ISO again.

CD loads on Other PC's no prob.
CD compares against the ISO with no errors.

Its genuine as far as the username / password i get is from the MS servers, and they Email me the product key.

Found the name now.

There is a factory loaded Vista on the PC at the moment, Which also fails to boot. On normal or any of the options given when pressing F8

Might be a faulty hard drive, try check disk

I had a similar issue a while ago with my old XP disk when I upgraded my machine to Win7 and installed XP on a different machine. Turns out my disk was damaged - a new DVD drive could read it, but an older one wouldn't play ball...changed the drive and I was good

got 60GB off the drive, And as far as im aware its not even looked at in that early stage of a boot ?
I mean you can boot from a CD without a hard Drive

Thought it may be a dodgey DVD drive, So i started booting the ISO from USB sticks.

Identical behaviour.

My guess is that its the HDD. Thing is a dodgy HDD usually stops a lot of linux cd's booting, except for openSUSE.

Not sure i understand completely but ill tell you from experience if your using a copy that's had drivers added and updates added then it can cause problems.
Another thing are you loading the ahci drivers? try turning off ahci in the bios and then boot the xp disk.

They boot.

The only one that boots without any kernel parameters is DSL. (runs a 2.4 kernel - all others i tested was 2.6)

All the rest need noapic acpi=off

Once running they all run fine. The hard drive dumped 60GB without any errors and a good read rate.

Ok i will try that now, Its a Vanilla copy though, Nothing added.

If this works your going to need to download the RAID driver for the mobo , change the setting back to ahci boot the xp cd and when it asks you load 3rd party drivers press the key its askes for ( i forget) then load the driver you downloaded and you will be able to install xp.
If you keep the bios set to IDE you can load xp but you will loose some functions of the HDD and you can just change the bios back to AHCI xp will blue screen.

If it wont boot the xp disk in IDE mode set in the bios then im not sure how else to advice as you seem to have done most other things.

Well it sees the disk - says Press any key to boot. Does the initial loading, then fails at the second set of loading - First set seems to load the GUI ?

With linux booting, is there anything i can add to the boot.ini file to make windows boot ? as a reformat was just a last option really.

Have you reset the cmos? try unplugging the power and pulling the small battery out of the mobo for 10 seconds place it back after you have done that power up the pc go to the bios and load default settings.
Now you will be on the defult bios settings you will need to select the boot order so you can boot the xp cd if you still cant load the xp cd and enter the setup to see the HDD for formatting your looking at a hardware problem like maybe the dvd drive is faulty or dirty maybe the xp disk is faulty.

Got to go now good luck i think you should try another xp CD can you borrow one? or download an iso to burn from another source just for a test.
Burning ISO on the slowest speed will make for a better copy did you burn your copy fast? try to burn in again at x2 or if you can wait x1.

Tried an old XP OEM CD. Didnt boot either.

Im sure its either ACPI or APIC just dont know which one atm, And im not sure how that will affect windows booting.

Just installed Ubuntu on there - on shutdown it pauses at "system halted" it just wont shut down. Strange....

CMOS has been reset.

Both the jumper and the battery way.

From testing - APIC seems to be broken - any way to boot windows without ?#

Well either broken or firing off interrupts faster than the CPU can handle them ?
