Is there any way i can inscrease my speed? e.g. a better modem/ cable?
Or should i ring up and threaten to leave, and they increse for free?
Whatever modem you have even the ancient ones do upto 2mb, when i went to 20meg, they gave us a new modem that increased our speed to 11meg during quieter times, never reach peak.
I'm on 4 meg and have my original modem, do you think I shouuld give them a bell?!
Yeh, you should say that you dont believe your modem is giving you the full speed. BEWARE you have to call premimum rate numbers to activate the new modem/order one.
I got my dad to phone them up on friday. Managed a great deal on 20mb:mrgreen:
Still using origional modem from them though. Had it years now:S
Wish they would bring cable around here, fed up of 1mb.

I dont think they will upgrade you for free, however make sure your getting the latest price...That can help a lot. You may find you can actually afford the 4 or 20 meg then.
If its just the modem they are not very quick to dish you out another. However if you do upgrade to a faster package then they might be persuaded.
I have 20meg and usually get a good 2480KB/s if the server can go some...Of course that leaves 80KB/s for overhead so I think its pretty damn close to the mark.
What speed are you actually getting from the 2meg ?

Around 1.5
You will never get your actual speed, at 4meg i got 3.7, and 2meg we got 1.8 so you shouldnt worry.
im supposed to get 8mb. And my line syncs at 8128Kbps :)

A damn site better than 64k which is what i was on for quite some time till the specs changed for adsl.
Living in the sticks has its downsides sometimes unfortunately.
Virgin medi ha i have swaped to virgin fo a supposed 6 to 8 mb connection had NO conection for two weeks despite them saying my line was active.
BT came round said i have been at the exchange there was no physical connection that way you had no broadband, er yes i know I have been telling virgin this for two weeks.
they are chraging me incorrectly, their throttling policysorry traffice management means to get 974kb of emails it takes me 2 hours to down load it, speed tests have show conection speeds of from 25k to 164k, & they say my speed is within normal operating!!!
I have spent up to 2 1/2 hours on the phone at anyone time.
I am just gong to have to leave absolutly outrageous service "or lack of it" when i asked fro a MAC code, theres no point giving you one sir as it is not compatable with any other ISP, next person says no thats not true, andoh by the way sire are you sure you are a customer, i have no detals of you!!!, well i wont be a customer much longer!!
i am sure there are satified customers somewhere, but I am not one, do visit my virgin hell
regards brian
im guessing you have Virgins ADSL, if i was you id never go ADSL because of problems with speed and so on, if you can get it in your area stick to Cable with Virgin.
you never get the actual speed. my provider gives me 1 million billion meg but i only get 1
am I being had?
NTL's / Virgin's customer support has, in my experience, been the worst i've ever come across (except perhaps for dialaphone). If you need a technical answer just keep pushing to speak to a level 2 / 3 engineer. The people who answer the phones just have a script to read from which consists mostly of "have you rebooted your pc? do you have the latest drivers?".
If you get through to a call centre thats blatantly reading from a script, hang up and keep ringing back till you get the Newcastle call centre. Give them your MAC address from under the modem and ask THEM to tell you what speed this MAC address is getting.
My 20mb package which was on every system correct, still didn't realise my MAC address was only getting fed 4 mb by the server. Got it upped correctly and they came out on Saturday and gave me a new modem (old one 3 years old and didn't top 5mb).
They rung me over 4 times to see if I was home for an earlier appointment.
I'm impressed with Virgin.
Oh and £23.50 for 20mb is a cracking price!
