View Full Version : motherboard on, nothing else happens!
Hi All,
Know my way around the PC, adding hard disks/ replace power supply etc but this is my first time building a system from scratch.
Bought a motherboard , AMD processor with heat sink, new 600W power supply. connected all up inside a new CoolMaster case, which looks great i might add. switched it on. I got a green light on my motherboard to say it's got power but then, Nothing. noticed the power lights on the front panel didnt come on. OK, after some reading, the cable may be faulty, or the front panel itself.
So much against my better judgement I touched the two pins for the PWR on the motherboard together using a slim screw driver. I did NOT touch any other pins here. I left the plugs on so as to insure I didn't get a short. and up she comes! Fans start up, including processor fan. hear hard disk go. All looking good, looks like i just need to send back my front panel / get a new cable rather than start rebuild from scratch.
Then just as quickly as it powered up, it switched off. green light stays on but fans all drop out. I'm wondering whether this is in effect like holding the power button down for too long which the system takes as a power down?
Still OK, try again. but this time nothing! So I'm currently fearing the worst here. I've blown my motherboard! Like a fool i should never have touched those pins ( after watching tutorial on Techmec.com by the way, not just going mad with a screw driver! ) Still, my green LED is on, so the power is still there so...?
Anyone help at all? Like i say first time i've built from scratch so it really could be he stupidest of probelms i'm overlooking here.
Thanks in advance.

take everthing out and reseat them
infact, just take the motherboard out of the case and put it on the anti static bag it came in and do it from there
First of all, disconnect everything that you don't need for the computer to work, i.e. cd-rom, hard drives etc, Try booting the PC with just the motherboard, cpu, RAM, and graphics cards plugged in. Reseat everything though, including the processor.
Also make sure that the front switched are connected properly to the motherboard, i always get these the wrong way round :P
full specs? and what psu?
Thanks for major fast response, at this rate might have her up by tea time!
Right.. the connectors are def the right way round.
I tried with the screw driver again and... Up we came! moved the screw driver off the two pins and it stayed up! so turned her off after about 15 seconds and tried again. Nothing!
so reset.. I have nothing connected apart from the CPU fan ( don't really wanna disconnect that plus if she starts up i can tell by this) and the power supply. read in the manual theres a jumper on this board to rest BIOS, is that it? not sure, i'll keep reading but..?
the model of the board is a ASUS MSN32 SLI Deluxe, the PSU is a turbo coll 510, 650W peak it says on the packet..
I assume thats a Turbo Cool 510 psu? http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Power+Supplies/500w++/PC+Power+&+Cooling+TURBO-COOL+510+SLI+?productId=27380
Any beeps from the mobo at all? shorting the pins out on the power connections shouldn't be a problem, assuming you didn't touch any others at the same time.
And yes to reset the bios either change the jumper over for a few seconds or remove the onboard battery with the pc powered down in both cases and mains cable removed from the psu.
Yep, thats the PSU one. I've followed your instructions. No bleeps, nothing. Just my green light still every time i reconnect and power on the PSU ( mains power switch on PSU )
No sound from anything. is there anything else i can try?
right, like you say cleggy, just tried a new power supply riped from my old dell box. green led again but nothing when i touch the two pins together..
sounds like you have a duff motherboard me thinks, which LED lights up? There may be more than one. Could you post a picture?
I will do ASAP. can't jsut drag drop here though can i? any quick photodrop like pastebin? it's the green LED between the standard PCI slots.
A faulty motherboard would also explain why the lights on the front panel dont come on I would assume. if that whole little pin array is faulty i wouldn't see the LED's on the front panel at all, which i don't.

If it is a duff motherboard, can i return it to Aria or is it manufacturer only? only got it Friday.
you need to host the piccys at somewhere like photobucket.com
if you need to return it you can request an RMA number here.

OK, added a couple of pictures. not sure it'll help much? green light on between the 2 PCI slots.

Edited by mac to include pics
I would assume built in then?
yeah, sorry no graphics card. it's on the motherboard. will get one if it works! was going to use it as a home studio PC. any new thoughts about my problem before I try to send back the motherboard?
Is there a jumper to enable onboard gfx?
I wonder if you should have held the screwdriver in place to keep the power on?
Have you reset the cmos jumper then tried again?
can't see it very well but am I right in thinking that the memories are in slots next to each other?
they should be 'staggered' to take advantage of dual channel, not sure if this would prevent POST tho
also have you connected all the extra motherboard power connectors? there may be a 4/8 pin connector and a molex harddrive type connector?
Hi, sorry long getting back. answer to questions :
Yep, I've reset the CMOS using the jumper. I think i mentioned removing battery too in previous post, but I've also done that, seen on picture just south of main power supply ( blue jumper )
No, there is no jumper for on board graphics according the the motherboard manual but not sure that sould stop the motherboard booting, especially sa i have had it up twice now
Memory, I hear what your saying but this is apprently the default configuration mentioned in the manual. Again as it's started up twice, don't think it can be memory positioning, but thanks if I get it working I'll certainly try your setup, didn't know you could do that, thought you had to pair, it's been a while since i tinkered :)
And power. There are two power leads onto the motherboard, a 4 pin one, which in the pictures is plugged in just above the blue PCI Ex slot to the left, and the main one, plugged in on the right hand side of the processor. from what i've read ( been thought the manual countless times you might tell! ) thats the lot?
Power on has worked twice using screw driver method. this is why i'm concerned its a faulty motherboard. also NONE of the lights on the front panel have ever lit up, so I'm wondering whether its a faulty connection onto those pins. ( seen bottom right on pictures) There was a spacer thingy i orignally plugged the front panel onto, then that spacer onto the motherboard. I removed this too and put the connectors directly onto the motherboard to make sure it wasn't that.
I'm thinking its a return job, unless no one else has anything else i can try??
I would try it with only one stick of memory as a final trial.
If no joy I reckon the mobo has been shorted and possibly blown up by the screwdriver method!
I've stabbed screwdrivers into motherboards for yonks and I've never killed one.
The first symptom indicated PSU - but it's possible it's the MoBo.
I'd take it out of the case anb set it up on the MoBo box and see if it powers up - if so then you've probably got a case standoff in the wrong place...
OK, i'll try out of the case and take out one of the memory sticks and try that.
yeah, everyone else I've spoken to has said nothing wrong with the screwdriver method. I've been very careful with not to cross any other pins with it anyway, just the power button.
Also I've tried a different power supply with exactly the same results, nothing.
Thanks
Good idea ive seen quite a few mobos not work due to incorrectly placed gold standoff! (seen some blown up by it too)

Motherboard are pretty robust to being short circuited - even if you went wild shorting out anything and everything you could find, the worst you would do is trip the PSU - we used to just run a screwdriver along the front panel connector on MoBos - only ASUS boards emitted sparks, but they never died...
Nope, still nothing gutted. looks like i'll be buying a new motherboard then :-(
Tried to put everything in to load it?
Sorry should have said what i've tried.
I've taken the moBo out, put it on the box. removed one of the memory sticks. plugged in. green LED as before. Still nothing on the front panel on my case ( when plugged onto motherboard) tried with screwdriver again between the two pins and still nothing.
Also tried the memory in a different slot.
