I've heard about the internet company 'Be'

Has anyone had experience with them? or has anyone heard about what they are like?

I have Be at my house, we get about 10/11 meg, and have a static IP, it is fantastic adsl2! i would recommend it only if you are within 2km of your exchange. The Be Boxes are also VERY good boxes, if you know how to configure them via telnet.

My student house downloads around 15-30 gig of data a day and BE have no complaints, there are no port restrictions either. And gaming is great :D definately worth the money! Plus you get a text when they are about to bill you :P

God knows whats their 'fare usage policy is'

I have 20Meg cable from VM and have never seen the speed below 18mbps except when I downloaded heavy in peak time and got a temporary speed limit. Ususually its reaching close to 20mbps probably on the line if you include overheads.

I know most ppl hate the speed limiting during peak hours but I would much rather have that than be limited permanently after a few months like some ISPs can do. Anyway you get like 3GB between 4pm and 12pm before you are speed limited. Even then its still 5mbps.

One thing I hate about UK home bband is the upload speed always sucks. Even on 20meg its like 758kbps or 96KB/s (90 is realistic)

Wasn't upload from dialup and download was from the satellite?

I thought it wasn't even 8Mbps...

BE seem seriously well priced - I'll be dumping Virgin Media and moving to BE - Virgin just rape you in terms of price...

I live less than 1KM away from our exchange - one of my neighbours has BE and regularly downloads from Usenet at 23.4Mbps

My 20Mb cable gets about 18.7Mbps and cost twice as much...

thats the thing u can live next to the exchange but that doesn't mean your cable hasn't took the scenic route, also you could have really poor cabling so living near the exchange isn't the main factor (though it's one of them)
