View Full Version : Linux live recovery?
So ive just been given a laptop HDD to recover some files from.
Ive banged it into my old laptop and it doesnt even post with it in!:surprised:
I dont really have any other way of connecting this HDD apart from the laptop so need a linux live CD to boot from to see if i can get anything from it.
What one you you suggest and is easy to use?
Cheers
Mat

They are all as good as each other really.
I would recommend the ubuntu live cd.
Will support more hardware than a lot of other live distros.
If it doesn't POST with the hard drive in, how are you planning on booting into Linux?
Ok It does post now, Just didnt when i first tried it for some reason!
After the post there is just a flashing underscore...
Try Puppy linux.
It even has a special version for older PCs
I multiboot a CD with Puppy, Hiren (now has a xp pe as well) and loads of portable apps.
Ok i got ubuntu, Put it in and it was loading and the HDD started to make a bad noise!
Kinda like an electronic hum but much louder. Sounded like the disk was touching the platter!
It it toast?

I would guess so. If the ubuntu live cd won't load up, try an OpenSUSE live disk. Sometimes they boot with dying HDD's as they don't query the disk as they boot.
