View Full Version : PhysX
Hi Guys,
since i've mainly used ati cards in the past today i noticed somebody talking about PhysX so i google it and it looks pretty cool ;)
im going to be buying a gtx 460 very soon and was wondering does it work with one nvidia gpu.. do you need two? does it use all the resources of the 2nd graphics card? etc?
wondered if anybody could fill me in :)
Thanks!!
I'm sure it works with one card m8.
Yea, physx does work with one card, but you would see a massive increase if you had a separate card for it. :).
ah nice to know :D is that increase in fps or quality etc?

Well it would be fps. I believe I remember somebody with a 460 (might of been 2 of them in SLI) and had physx on high on mafia 2, the fps avg was lower then 10 :/. It requires tons of calculations to run which is why it makes such a difference to fps, however it depends on the game ofc as I don't believe batman's physx was that demanding :).
You don't really need physx tbh, few games have them.
Say if i have a GTX460 and that gets me 40 fps with no physx.
Then i set physx to medium and get 30 fps, then to high and get 20 fps but the shiny shiny is improved.
Mafia II physx makes a massive difference to the overall feeling of the game, but comes at too much of a price.
i see so leave off until i get 2 x 460s for sli ;)

in mafia with everything (including physx) set to high i get 37fps average and the benchmark says this is not optimal enough and advises me against it. i still run it at that but get the odd stutter. without phsx i get another 50+ and more fps but i don't get all the bling so i stick to 37fps as its just better i think.
i was thinking about getting another card to dedicate to physx but due to me having a wireless card and not enough room i need a single slot card with enough power to run high end games in physx and there hard to come by. i found a 9800gt single slot but i don't know if there are any other higher single slot cards than that, probably are but i don't know the performance on physx cards too well.
i heard that if i run one of my 2 460's as a dedicated physx card i'd get more than 37fps but i haven't tried it yet as when i just tried dedicating it in the nvidia control panel without taking the sli bridge off it didn't work.:)

mafia II i get around 45-50 average FPS everything on high with my 5850 and GT 220 as a PhysX card

i've mentioned it before on here i think because it just seems low doesn't it. then again its a new game and maybe its just not optimaliy configured yet.
try some benchmarks then post them up and see if anybody has some to compare it to? 3dmark or something?

its ok on other things and mafia 2 has a benchmark on it and i get 37 fps everything high (physx high). i noticed your getting a 460 (and planning sli) on another thread so i'll do a unigine one with my i7 860@3.7 and put it up so it'll give you an idea.
Just ran it again.
Maxed out @ 1920 x 1080 NO PHYSX
i7 920 @3.6Ghz GTX460 @ 845/2003 42.3fps
Same but with MEDIUM PHYSX 20.6fps. Unplayable really.
thanks El Wayneo nice to know! :)
I have a similar question, I have a nvidia sli motherboard with a ATI 4890, can i use my 8600GT for physx?
Yes but I really think it's a waste of money, time, power and effort. It gives almost nothing to the game and as Pullen said, not many games support it.
yes you could BUT.
1. you have to hack it to work
2. 8600gt is underpowered.
3. no real need for it.
4. just too much effort for little gain in 1 or 2 games.
hmm i see, i guess i'll leave it then, Thanks :thumb:
