Just a stupid question,

Recieved some new parts today installed etc and when i fire up the the computer the fans come on etc but no output to the monitor it doesnt even reach the bios. Im using an AM2 dual core processor,

The motherboard has a 12v socket apparently for the AM2 processor, My current psu doesnt have a cable for it, Could this be why the system doesnt reach the bios or am i all wrong and it isnt needed.

Appreciate any help.

If you have 24 pins on the mobo and your only connecting 20 that will be a problem. Also there may be another 4 pin connector on the mobo which needs connecting and in some cases a four pin molex connector too.

I thought that the 4 pin 12v was only used for intel processors, I didnt realise the AM2 needed it aswell. Should have realised cause if it wasnt needed they wouldnt put it on a socket AM2 board haha.

Help much appreciated, cheers :)

No it wont, not in my experience anyway. I have ran a mobo with a 24 way power connector from a psu with a 20 pin connector ok.

Very true, the square 4 pin connector needs fitting too as would any other power connector on there, rule of thumb it there is a power connector on the mobo plug the corresponding connector from the psu into it.

Reason I suggested this ive head a few boards when I ran only 20pin power in 24 pin slot gave me BSOD every 10 mins, connected all 24pins and problem went :)

Maybe yours was a higher spec than the pc i did it with. I wouldn't swear to it but i THINK the extra connections provide more power to the cpu, or was it pcie connection, whatever it was the pc i ran like it was fairly low spec anyway. Single core A64 onboard gfx etc etc.

Anyway it never stopped yours posting did it ;)

I think the 24-pin connector must be connected and the 4-pin connector is recommended but optional and the molex connectors are usually for PCI-E and stuff

This is for CPU, Needs to be connected else you wont be going anywhere. Most PSU's you get these days will have one however you might want to spend > £30 to get a good quality one.

Not sure where the talk about the other 24/20 pin connector came from but yeah check that you have got all the pins plugged on that ;)
