View Full Version : New Phone
The nice Indian man at 3 is sending me a new phone on the 21st. It's an HTC Wildfire. I had a look around and it seems OK. Are they any good?
Only heard good things about it :) Not a top of the line model, but perfectly capable phone.
they aint bad, its a small one but you will get the right os and great after sales support from htc :thumb:
Seems like they really wanted me to stay, got a much, much cheaper contract (half price). It's my third phone with them. Perhaps I got a loyalty discount.
Mine is up with 3 soon I hope I get a good deal aswell, let me know how it goes mate and I might have to try one.
Why not get the GT-I 9000? bigger, better screen, fastest smartphone in the world!
Why not get the GT-I 9000?
That sounds like a chavved up Saab.. ;)
I'll be interested what you think of the Wildfire, SD - I'm also looking at it for my upgrade too :)
Hmm they dont seem to have, maybe they do. I am happy tbh with this one I think lol.
Ill let you know how it goes!

the ones i played with in best buy were a little slow on the swiping actions (a bit laggy, not too smooth) but that will probably improve with fro-yo (android 2.2) so as long as you're fine with 320x240 on an android phone (i find it a little limiting on my e71...) then it's getting great reviews and i'm sure you won't be disapointed.
24 months tho right?
They wanted to move me on to a 24 month as they've totally dropped 18 months now :( I told them where they could stick a 24 month contract and they put me on a 1 month rolling, £10 loads of mins/texts/data.
just have to get droid now...

shoulda begged a little..
i phoned to see what they had, they tried to persuade me to take a wildfire, i said no.
then he tried to get me to take a wildfire with a ridiculously improved contract, but no extra money. i said no.
then i asked if i could get the awesome contract deal with a free iPhone... (i was half kidding tbh), he tapped at his keyboard for a minute, sighed deeply (really, he did) and said yes!
i've been a loyal customer for quite a few years, but really i'm not sure how much of a difference that makes these days. i reckon a lot of it is pure & simple luck-of-the-draw tbh
still, i dont care, i got iPhone and great contract :D

Well I am pretty underwhelmed by it so far. It's really annoying and fiddly to use. IIRC I am always like this with a new phone lol. They annoy me until I get the hang and can use without thinking about it. Just setting my daughter's image for her contact which was imported from my sim did not work. I had to manually create the contact again. Finding stuff is pretty counter intuative as well. I have three annoying icons which tell me I have downloaded three app from the Android store but can I work out how to remove them? Nope.
Would not sync at first with PC and had to set debug mode, another annoyance. Music player is pretty crap compared to Sony's as is sound quality. I may have a better review in a few days once I have had time and can be bothered to play with it.
I'll say one thing though. DPD performed delivery and even gave me a time for delivery within an hour! Awesome sevice I would defo recommend them as Aria new Currier.

I downloaded an app called "uninstaller" which is really easy to use and does what it says on the tin ;) Otherwise I think you have to go to the market, find the app, and uninstall from there which is a real pain in the bum
Hope you get the hang of it soon :)

Music player is pretty crap
I haven't heard of anyone keeping the default player. have a look on lifehacker for their android pack
Still using the defaul player on the desire - does everything I need it to except a graphic equaliser. I'll update it at some point when there's a clear "winner" ;)
Mr. Grapes

well check this out for timely...

I'm looking for a new phone, want one free with the contract though. HTC seems top so, gogo specmeupbros.
Well not found a free music player yet which has a Graphic equaliser. Tried a few but they only seem to give the lyrics and then incorrectly! What is important is sound quality not rubbish like album art or lyrics.
Other than that, starting to get the hang of it now. At first it was painful to use but now I am getting used to the touchpad.
Have you had a touch screen phone before?
I'm looking for a new phone, want one free with the contract though. HTC seems top so, gogo specmeupbros.
nexus one on vodafone/.. http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/shop/mobile-phone/google-nexus-one/
the only pure google android handset, made from a solid piece of aluminium and glass not plastic like the samsung phones!
Have you had a touch screen phone before?
No, it's my first. Takes some getting used to.
Yeah - I just wondered if it was that, or if it was genuinely just a difficult phone to use..
As is would you recommend it?, as my girlfriend wants to upgrade our LG Cookies to these in 2 weeks as they are free on our call plan.
As is would you recommend it?, as my girlfriend wants to upgrade our LG Cookies to these in 2 weeks as they are free on our call plan.
Thats what we were looking at doing too, hence all the questions
wayneo get an android or an IPhone,.. and dont get a 24 month contract or an 18 month if you can
Well we only have £15 a month call plans so no Iphone or Galaxy S.
And the Wildfire is free.
Plus its only ever a 12 month contract.
Well yes I think I would. Saving me money and I am enjoying playing.
Yeah, exactly the same here... My girlfriend is on a £13/month contract.. I'm on a £19/month contract. I don't want to pay any more than that, which means ~£150 for the phone costs for a desire or galaxy. Which I'm also not going to do.
But I would quite like an android phone..
the wildfire is an excellent phone..
Yeah i thought it was just a cut down Desire.
I don't think it's cut down as such. Lower res screen is all AFAIK.
I meant a bit smaller in size, hence the smaller screen.
Slower & Older CPU and less ram as far as I know too..
I don't think it's cut down as such. Lower res screen is all AFAIK.
and the cpu is at 528 instead of 1ghz which is worrying when you think how much the sense UI slows the desire down...
but the camera is 5mp and its very small and light
http://www.htc.com/uk/product/wildfire/specification.html
the original 2.0 and above phones were very lavishly built my nexus is hand milled from a block of aluminium into a one piece chassis of glass and aluminium and has external mics that reduce background noise but in effect do nothing all of this isnt needed in a phone so the wildfire is all the lavishness taken out.
although the small screen would bother me!

contract string or just pay as you sew aka cotton LOL
Pay as you sew.
Hahahahahahahahah
Bull by the horns day today I feel. Not overly happy with the Wildfire. Small screen limits which application can run on it. I am also having problems using it with fat fingers. Texting is a slow painful nightmare.
I phoned 3 and they are swapping it tomorrow for a Samsung Galaxy S i9000. These any good?
Mr. Grapes

1/4 of the forum is on one (it seems). they are of the 2 best droids out there right now, the other being the desire.
(looks like just under half of all android users are on the Galaxy S.
my personal opinion is that they are too big (just) and feel cheap - which they are not
apart from that, they are top drawer
Hmm good then lol. I made the right choice for once today.
Why not get the GT-I 9000? bigger, better screen, fastest smartphone in the world!
i did tell you
Nothing compares.
the closest to it is iphone 4, which feels heavy and cumbersome, even though smaller dimensions it feels like a brick in pocket. - suffers poor reception and the screen just feels small once youve used the galaxy for a day.
Just run Quadrant standard after the lag fix and the galaxy is way ahead of its competition. Add to that gingerbread compatible and its a no brainer!
The superamo LED is a thing of raw beauty!
Indeed lol I should have cancelled then really. I thought it would be OK and I could not be bothered lol. It's your fault anyway. You and that bloody Angry Birds game lol.

haha hows that? does it not work good on the HTC?
Does not work at all! It says no found and I discovered it was due to the screen size being too small. About half the apps I wanted would not work due to this.
I'm gonna have to start asking for commission from Samsung at this rate ;) lol
Anyway for those that missed my previous post somewhere about a good site for all things Galaxy sign up here as this is where I get all my info from.

Glad to see you joining the masses SD ;)
Edit:

At least you wont have that issue on the Galaxy :D
i actually look at the galaxy on a regular basis and think what a damn fine piece of engineering! it truly impresses me everyday.
LOL
So you enjoying it then ;)
So what does Tappa Talk actually do and how would it benefit me may I ask?

I dont think tapatalk does anything! in the stock android browser i just hove no trouble with forums at all. all tapatalk does is pester your forums users to buy it, then seemingly nothing else as all its tech is already built into chrome mobile... maybe you guys use opera or something..
I only use the standard browser as I dont like opera.
Tapatalk makes using the forum so much easier to use and to reply too on the move, much more easier than the browser.
try the free version to browse and see what you think honestly it's the most used app I have other than FB ;) lol
been there done it bought it and uninstalled it what a con of a program!
ther is no problem using a forum with my phone i dont need an app for that..
hows it a con though? if it makes it easier to browse and reply LOL
I had a look but haven't played with tapa... because I have no problem at all using the default (or 3rd party) browser to view forums :)
I was finding it hell with the Wildfire, better than the C905 with Opera though. Very very slow to type stuff.
Instead of trying to zoom in to read the forums properly or trying to press the right bit of screen to quote etc which if i must admit can be a faff and a half when on the move I just open up tapa and it's simple clicks to do what i want and it's easier to read a thread without going into it if i dont want too because it has a preview already there.
Seriously Senty have we got outta bed the wrong side today as a couple of your posts seem to be argumentative :D

i think the problem with the small android phones (like the wildfire and x-10 mini) is the screen is too small to use as a keyboard. this is where the x-10 mini pro comes in as it has a physical keyboard, about the same size as my e71, and you can type pretty quickly on those...

If due a upgrade soon, that will be the phone to get. :thumb:
yeah its a great phone its called the EVO in america and its an awesome phone but its not new its only new to the UK. HTC brilliant build quality and updated specs from the snapdragon CPU based generations (nexus, desire etc..) IM already looking at when my contract runs out and what i want next its either another HTC or ill import a motorola depending on whats new out at the time.
We really need to sort our mobile companies out as we are at least a year behind on android handsets, no motorolas, old HTC's and only one samsumg galaxy s when the USA has all those and much more... and they have a much older tech network to run them on..
If due a upgrade soon, that will be the phone to get. :thumb:
EH didnt you get your galaxy last month?
about 2months now.
And happy as anything with it too. :D

is there any difference in specs between the desire HD and the current desire? apart from the screen size?
AFAICT the resolution is the same WVGA 480x800, just physically bigger, and the CPU is the same 1GHz. or am i missing something?
Is it a better camera too?

Arguably the best android phone out there, miles ahead of the wildfire! :D
Free upgrade?
8MP camera is def better, HD video should be better (although I heard that 2.2 brings HD vid to the current desire - still waiting on Orange for my update  )
Slightly bigger screen, otherwise much the same.

CPU is different, snapdragon in the desire and scorpion in the HD which has a graphics core that performs much better, the DPI on the screen is a huge increase but the power it draws is less, camera much better more internal storage.. its hard to remember off the top of my head but it is a lot more phone ..
From the looks then pretty much on a par then with the galaxy but larger screen led flash and the better build materials then.

5mp is more than ample for majority.

I totally agree! there are some new 14mp LG phones but time has proved that cameras are not good or bad by the amount of pixels in the picture, did anyone see the gadget show when they took picture with all phones and then got pro judges from photography companies to judge them and the winner was a 3.2 mp sony w750i or something and today its generally accepted that the Iphone 4 is the best camera phone despite it being 5mp which is brilliant for apple to join the rest of us at 5mp but i cant see the need for more than that.. MP if after all the size of the picture not the quality
Camera phones are for taking photos on the move, or impromptu photos.
For "proper" photos, or photos where you're really worried about quality, use a "camera" ;)
imo ;)
don't get me wrong, I love having a camera on my phone, because it means I've always got it with me :thumb:
Mr. Grapes
30-09-10, 17:18
what happens with cam phone pics... they all get resized down to 'web' size anyway.
high MP on tiny sensors just makes more noise, and use more storage space per pic. phone cams, aren't for photography, but for snaps. anyone who 'needs' more than 5MP on a camera phone is just doing it for e-peen.
what are you going to do with your 14MP cam phone image? print it out at A0 size? I doubt it... it'll still look awful due to the sensor noise...
[/soapbox]
How does the HTC HD processor etc compare to galaxy S?
as on Quadrant benchmark the HTC desire scores terribly VS the lagfixed Galaxy.
well i dont shrink anything nobody mms's anymore! but i agree about cameras above 10mp's just sucking..
actually now ive thought about it i do a few a month when i wanna send a pic to someone not on facebook DOH!.. but i dont shrink it i think a phone i had in the past shrunk it that bad that ive always just turned it off..

i couldn't get it either so i looked around:

interestingly on the paid for apps, my app store has some apps which have $ sign and some which have £ sign. i guess I have the "international" app store somehow LOL

Well SD has this turned up today and if so what do you think?
Of course it did. City link had nothing to do with it! Love it. Cant put it down.
Lol
You'll end up with it permanently on charge if you dont put it down.. Like i do lol
You rooted it yet? Appliex lagfix or flashed it too froyo ;)
At the mo thats greek to me. No doubt i will read up and do it.
my new phone turned up today as well, also from three and DPD courier was bang on the money with the texted hourly time slot. Nokia E63 so not quite the same, but £13 a month and does all I need - see the Spotify thread, the E63 has a 3.5mm headphone jack :D
Gadget city this week for me :)
DT.
Dpd ftw. Same here. Brilliant service.
Just got my Galaxy after have a HTC Wildfire for a week or so and hated it. I love this phone! Quite simply the best "phone" I have ever owned! The built in media player and supplied headphones produce a brilliant sound unlike the Wildfire. All the functions are smooth and snappy to use. One major problem I had with the Wildfire was screen size. Fatish finger pressing wrong keys all the time. Texting was painful to say the least. Not so with the full screen of the Galaxy. Can't praise it enough and am listening to music on it now as I can't stop playing lol.
good stuff glad your happy.
Mine was due on Friday, but orange decided it was out of stock on Thurs and then on Friday said it was out for testing? :| So I'm going to have a moan on the phone after dinner, as they said they'd call over the weekend and they still haven't

yeah, i've been playing non stop with my new droid. in under a week i've unlocked it, rooted it and flashed it to a new (clean) ROM.
It'll definitely tide me over til the next gen
So I do get a bit of a delay sometimes. What's this I hear about a lag fix?

Awesome thank you sire,
says I need to access recovery console or something. The lag fix is unavailible.
Hang on.. so 3 upgraded your from a wildfire (cheapest droid phone we do at work) to the Galaxy S (dearest phone bar a blackberry torch and the iphones) and didnt charge you anything?
How much is your contract and length? a tenner a month and a 24 month contract doesnt cover the handset costs alone...
They did indeed upgrade me and I am paying less than I was with my c905. £30 pm. 500 texts and mins and 512 of data. Trouble is my ex likes to talk a lot on the phone to me and uses up my credit!
Love the weather thingy. It just started raining here and i refreshed the weather and it reflected it! So much better with the lag fix!

my Mum has ordered a Galaxy she's that impressed with mine!
She's got some old samsung that lags like a 56k dialup when browsing through pics.
Orange did her a retention deal when she quoted my tmob deal,
for £22 a month, 1300 x net mins, free landline, 1000 text, unlimited internet (500gb cap, low but enough for her) free phone, but out of stock till later this week.
