Creative SoundBlaster AWE32 - it has had the extra memory fitted, which, with the built-in WaveTable made it the first consumer sound card to really break into Sampling and Sequencing.

They were cool 'coz I had one, and the EDO RAM cost a small fortune (More than the card)

[COLOR=Black]"Sound Blaster AWE32 is an ISA sound card from Creative Technology. It is an add-on board for PCs. The AWE32, introduced in March 1994, was a nearly full-length ISA card, measuring 14 inches (356 mm) in length. It needed to be this large due to the number of features included -- the most available at the time -- manufacturing technology did not allow for a cost feasible implementation integrating all of the functions into a smaller number of chips."

Thanks Wiki.... cough.

It's a Creative SoundBlaster AWE32 - it has RAM-based wavetables that could be used to sample and playback as a new instrument. It used standard SIMMs and, in this photo, has had them filled/upgraded, and finally features the waveblaster daughterboard connector! Retro but cool photo :thumb:

thats an AWE32 PnP CT3990 with ASP chip and what was really cool about it was it had the EM-8000 chip which was the fore runner for EAX which all modern sound cards have today.

the fact is was huge was quite cool too :D

Its the Soundblaster AWE32! It has the Waveffect music synthesizer chip on it. It has all the normal / standard sb16 stuff and also has the Emu800 which offers high quality music synthesis using the waveffects technology.

I believe it can accommodate 28mb of ram in the 2 slots.

It was a high tech card of it day!

Creative Lab's Soundblaster AWE32 with built in WavEffect synth chip (which made it differ from the SB16) and extra RAM added in.

It was cool at the time because it had the most features built in of all the cards available.

Again, Soundblaster AWE32. It was cool because it had the Wavetable Synthesis stuff, ram upgrades, and it also had the WaveBlaster daughterboard available too .

And also because I had one :D

The Sound Blaster AWE32 (March 1994) introduced the EMU8000 processor which supported 30-channel wavetable synthesis,512 KB built-in memory, and two 30-pin SIMM slots (with their own memory controller) for adding sample memory. The AWE32 supported up to 16 MB of additional SIMM memory.

And the best thing about it was the support of E-Mu's SoundFont standard, which allowed users to build custom sound sets using their own samples.

It is a plastic board, and the thing that is so great about it is the lumps of silicon as well as the copper connections that are enbeded into the plastic that allow the silicon to be connected to each other. The lumps of silicon are called microchips and they enable millions if not trillions of calculations to be made every second, they really have changed the world we live in.

This is you see a printed circuit board and without them we wouldn't have computers, TV's mobile phone and many other things we take for granted these days.

ISA AWE32 with added Wavetable and 16Mb SIMM.

It was cool 'cos it had features never before seen on a soundcard, cemented Creatives' place in the PC sound world and you could beat people to death with it.

It appears to be a SoundBlaster Awe32 ISA sound card. At first glance I thought it had some kind of funky ribbon cable coming out of it, but on closer inspection it would seem that it's a RAM module. I really need new eyes. Wearing my glasses doesn't really help much, and when sat in front of the computer, they actually make things worse, much worse.

It was cool at the time because it offered a large range of integrated features, meaning that external wavetable synthesisers were not needed. It was also very long, nearly the length of a full ISA card.

I've never seen one before - no one has - but I'm guessing it's a white hole. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. A black hole sucks time and matter out of the universe; a white hole returns it. That's why we're experiencing these curious time phenomena on the board.

That photo is of a Sound Blaster Awe32 ISA Sound Card kitted out with the maximum Ram upgrade for extra storage for soundfonts.

It was so cool for a few reasons:

1. It was a massive card to aspire too, back then a good soundcard was a must for serious PC gamers, more so than graphics even.

2. It was one of the first cards that could class itself as a pro-sumer PC product. It's advanced wavetable and MIDI capabilities making it just the ticket for budding musicians, but still having a full Soundblaster 16 onboard for maximum compatibility and performance in Windows 3.1 and DOS games.

3. It was through soundcards like this that CD-ROM drives used to connect to your PC. Without the progress from the likes of Creative games like Day Of the Tentacle would never have had real speech.

that is a sound blaster AWE32, a ISA sound card made by creative tech.

it has added ram increasing its memory total to 28mb

its cool because it paved the way for digital music age, with out it electronic synthesised music would never have been able to take form on cd's. for this reason i respect this 14" beast.

This is a member of the SoundBlaster Awe32 range of sound cards with an old ISA interface from Creative. The acronym AWE stood for Advanced Wav Effects. The Awe32 could be upgraded to 28MB of RAM for it's SoundBanks patches. Added to this card are 2 x 30 pin SIMM's, these were only available in sizes of 256KB, 1MB, 4MB or 16MB. Given the cost at the time it's unlikely to be 4MB or 16MB installed so most likely these are 2 x 256KB or 2 x 1MB. Of course whoever owned it may have had money to burn so it could always be the larger sizes.

Sound blaster Awe32 card - has two sets of 30pin simms added on which allowed an additional 28mb!

Why was it so cool? Well the pic of your one is so cool is because it doesn't have a single 'Creative' logo on it greatly increasing the value. ;)

...but at the time it was the first professional sound card with Advanced WavEffects Synthesis.
