TMA-1 (Tycho Magnetic Anomaly 1) which turns out to be one of the enigmatic monoliths placed in the solar system by an alien civilization. In the story, Dr. Heywood Floyd travels from Clavius (http://www.daviddarling.info/encyclopedia/C/Clavius_crater.html) Base to see the artifact. Tycho also serves as the location of a 24th century community called Tycho City in the film Star Trek: First Contact.

Strictly speaking nothing. However if you are talking about the film 2001 then it was the Monolith, the Magnetic Anomaly which sent out a peircing RF signal when dug up and exposed to sunlight. This communicated with the Monolith in orbit of Jupitor, or Saturn, depending if you were reading the book or watching the film.
