Hi,

So one of my girlfiends teacher friends is splitting up with her husband as it turns out he's been doing the dirty on her for a while.

So she's moving out and has 2 kids each of which need a laptop.

She has a budget of £550 for TWO laptops.

All they need to do is play DVDs and browse the web, maybe a Flash based game or two, so nothing fancy.

Ideally they need to be new, but an "open box" with 12 months warranty is okay.

I understand that sub £300 is unlikely but i thought i'd ask.

Many thanks.

Aria do a £299.99 laptop (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Laptops/Laptops/Acer+EM440+15.6%22+Laptop+(LX.NAA02.001)+?productI d=41389) - but it doesnt say anything about an OS. The competitor beginning with an e also does a (fairly decent spec for the money) £299 laptop but again no OS.

does it have to be a laptop could you not get away with a netbook and external drive?

I asked and she would rather have a laptop.

You could easily get two half decent ones for £300 if you go 2nd hand / refurb. Personally I would probably do this for kids laptops and claim on the home insurance if there was a problem.

Well I have two that you could have for around that. Otherwise we are into competitor territory or Ebay so I wouldn't want to go into too much detail. Likes of BigPockets has ones for that sort of level quite often for instance.

Sorry bud, missed your reply yesterday. They are at home but I will do my best to reel off the specs. The better one was my laptop before I moved to a Ion based Netbook for the HDMI connection:

Spec is as per the review other than I have upgraded the RAM to 2GB. The general condition is very good other than the usual minor scratching to the outside from coming in and out of a carry case.

The other is my dad's last laptop, replaced by a netbook as he decided he wanted something smaller to take on holiday with him (he spends a lot of time on holiday these day)

Apologies in advance if I get any of these wrong, but to my recollection it comes with a single core Sempron 3500+, 1.5GB RAM, 60GB HDD, DVD-RW, 2nd Battery and XP Pro. Again in decent condition apart from the PSU which has been home repaired when the cables became loose.

Nay danger, just thought of them sat here not doing much when you mentioned cheap laptops. Hope the ones that turn up are decent :thumb:

PC world refurbishment laptops are her best buy, I bought one for £389.99 and it had the specs of the same laptop when it's new but costs £649.99 at it's new price. Anyway the laptop came pretty much in mint condition and it's run fine, no problems or nothing. In fact I'm using it right now.

Just make sure she buys something with decent specs, especially with today's modern OS's it's just going to be a pain in the *** booting up the laptop's etc if they have like 2gb ram and a bad processor or something like that.

I highly recommend the refurbished laptops at PC world, she'll be getting expensive laptops at a extremely cheap price simply because they have re-boxed it after I customer probably decided to change their mind and in return she'll get a rather decent laptop that may well even have 4gb ram or a good processor.
