Anything from 9mb to 18mb generally. but like all ISP's they only say UPTO 20mb... :<

If I download during an offpeak period, using a download manager to download from a site I KNOW is fast, I can get 2MByte/s which is the full 20Mbit/s.

In the peak usage times, like evening, it can go down to 10Mb/s though. I heard a RUMOUR that Virgin will half your speed if you go over a certain download amount during peak periods. This may be what I'm experiencing although I dont download heavily all the time.

with Virgin because your on Cable you do actually get 20MB !

But say your download a file from a site and your onlying getting like 5MB a sec speed thats because of the speed of the server your downloading from. If you go to Speedtest.net and press the LONDON one, dont bother with any others as there crap, and you will see you wont even be able to reach the 20MB as the file is downloaded already.

But you do get 20MB as i use a program called flashget and i download like 5 files at a time from Rapidshare and i get my full 20MB download.

The only places where you dont get what you pay for is ADSL which honestly i think is a pile of crap.

As far as Speedtest goes, I get MUCH faster speeds using the Maidenhead server. I am in Cambridge.

Speedtest tells me I get about 18Mb/s which is very close to the truth.

Heres what I get from work:

Confusingly it thinks I work in washington. Oh well...

Virgin media not sure of speed its the Large internet package they advertise. Goes like shi* off a stick though :) does go down once in a while - usually when ive turned the modem off at the wall overnight (same plug as pc) and it takes a while to fire up again.

How did you get 20mb for £10 Micky!? Did you have a go at them?

Micky007
17-10-07, 20:22
yea Virgin are good for true broadband, only problem i have with them is there premium rate number you have to ring if you need support.

which is a rip off seeing how much 20MB people have to pay anyway.

Virgin media, but they have gone downhill in the last couple of weeks.

So I thought I would check the status page and on my way I found this

http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html

Grrrr

So will be hunting around for a new deal, so I will be interested in this thread

Broadband is this country is absolutely pants when you compare it to places on the continent. For alot of people the network is just not capable of supporting high speed.

Thats an old release. they've been saying that for months although i think they only put in place in certain areas.

thats been in place for around 3 months now and i think its just stupid and i agree they have gone down hill ever since Telewest & NTL merged to form Virgin Media :-(

They wasnt prepared at all and the only reason they did this was to stop BT getting the award for the best amount of boardband customers.
