Ok so I have an MSI 790FX-GD70 board and the phenom 955 cpu. I now need some ram.

I have seen a lot of posts on msi's forum stating the a lot of ddr3 is not compatible with am3 boards. What would I be best to go for?

I want a 2x2gb 4gb kit.

AMD CPUs tend to prefer tight timings and lower speeds. Anything beyond 1600MHz is a waste, and I'd try and get 8-8-8-24 or better timings. As ever, I'd go with Corsair for their excellent returns service should something go wrong.

I've not personally come across any DDR3 incompatibilities with AM3, at least any more so than with Intel DDR3 mobos. If you can afford it, and you have space near your HSF, I'm sure this would be fine (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Memory/DDR3+Dual+Channel+%E2%80%93+1600MHz+%2F+PC3-12800/Corsair+Dominator+4GB+%282x2GB%29+DDR3+PC3-12800C8+1600Mhz+Dual+Channel+Kit+?productId=37551) . If that's a bit too much, this would be good too (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Memory/DDR3+Dual+Channel+%E2%80%93+1600MHz+%2F+PC3-12800/Corsair+XMS3+4GB+%282x2GB%29+DDR3+PC3-12800C9+1600MHz+Dual+Channel+Kit+%28CMX4GX3M2A1600 C9%29+?productId=37570).

?? AM3 boards have no problem with ram with your 955 i would suggest getting some decent cas 7 1600mhz stuff or go for the fastest you can afford and then slow it down a little with the tightest timings you can get. the faster stuff is usually higher binned and can get some pretty impressive results.

i have no problem running my 955 with 1866mhz cas 8 ram.

I have seen a lot of posts on the MSI forums about people having problems with ram that states: designed for intel i5 and i7.

am3 cpu's that are C3 steppings especially the X6's (better IMC) can run well above 1866mhz... easily 2100 and above aswell. my c2 can run at 1800 just fine aswell. and they perform excellently, like the G.Skill flares they can overclock to 2000+ if you have a good motherboard.
