Im downloading something from Steam and its hovering between 2.0-2.2mb/s which is a little odd since my router is reporting 14438kbps download speed

Steam is flawed. Do a speed test and then see what results you get.

A neat online one can be found here (http://www.speedtest.net/) and if you're using kaskersky for your anti virus, turn it off before running the test as it will mess with the results.

It's just Sky being Sky.
They're throttling your speeds.
Get a better ISP... There are plenty of threads about switching to a new ISP, see my comments there.

Toon - did you read the post - he said steam is showing higher speeds than his connection speed ;)
Also I have been with sky for nearly two years, download/upload constantly and have never once been throttled (one month I downloaded/uploaded not much under 1TB and my speeds didnt alter).

Edit 2 - I didnt double post I promise :)
My steam speeds have always been decent, i was able to download 9 1/2GB in about 2 hours and im with sky

Sky don't throttle your speed at all. I used to download through "peak" times every day and I never once got my speed put down.
I'm going to sign with 'Sky broad band' tonight. Hope there ok.

They're great mate. I've downloaded a lot, not as much as others though and they've never once told me off for it. Even if it is through the "peak times", they simply don't care! :)
Apart from that, upto 20Mb/s for £10 a month... can't go wrong! Can't wait to get more than 6.6Mb/s. Shame about my crappy line. :(

Well my dad's workmate gets 0.2Mb and she's next to the exchange.
If it's LLU then Sky are probably OK but otherwise avoid them.
Steam often reports me getting around 1mb download on my 8mb connection. I wouldnt worry about it, especially if its saying you're getting higher than you 'should'..
Can you also just confirm that you're talking about both values in Mb rather than MB?

Seems to be £7.50 now for existing customers, only problem is I invoice my BB to work so a Sky invoice with a full package as well would probably be frowned upon ;)

I should expand - neither site work properly with Virgins cable connections (especially the 50mb package), they are designed for ADSL connections upto 24mbps (regardless of what the first ones graph shows).

so is BBmax but still test 50Mb no probs
but even still i had to hit one of the sites 3 times to get the 28032it wouldn't even give me 20Mb

Fair enough - I use them on all of my customers business ADSL connections and get realistic results - whereas speedtest.net gives me very poor results in comparison.

i find the only server from speedtest worth using is london's
but i would say it depends on routing but that always give me a good test

I would have well left virgin by now if i was you mate
or
talked them into 50Mb at the new customer price
ive never noticed throttling on my sky account when i was with bt i couldnt miss it
Ye steam is messed up, they report 500kb/s download speeds for me when I have never reached higher than 350kb/s, I don't think my phone line or my connection can handle any higher.
I've never been throttled with sky, and I've been with them for at least 4yrs... and I can hit it pretty hard with an average download/upload of around 200gh/30gb a month

Been with sky about 2 years and also never been throttled and I have downloaded well over 100gig per month since I joined.
It's worth mentioning that Sky are still the only ISP with a 'true' unlimited tariff... everyone else throttles or has usage caps... Sky doesn't post anything in the T&C as far as I know.
You do have to be on the upper package though... but if you also take your phone with them, you get a discount. So a 20mb line (I'm getting around 18) only costs me £7.50 a month. On top of that I get unlimited calls 24/7 to local and national numbers, as well as 30 international destinations... although for free calls you have to make them less than 60 mins, so watch the clock hang up at 55mins and call back again. :)
