Would like to upgrade to Vista but I play alot of old games i'm wondering whether it has a compatibility mode like XP has?

It sure does - I've not encountered any problems with games that work in XP.

If they work in XP they should work in Vista.

Homeworld 2 is a game you can add to the games that vista breaks.

You have to turn off DEP:

1. Click Start
2. Click All Programs
3. Click Accessories
4. Right Click on Command Prompt
5. Left click on Run as Administrator
6. Click the Allow button if it asks you for permission
7. Type or copy and paste this into the command prompt window:

bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff

8. Hit enter and you should see the confirmation: Operation Completed Successfully
9. Reboot and DEP should be off.

To turn it back on do as above but use AlwaysOn. This is the only fix I found.

Why not just leave DEP on, but add the HomeWorld executable to the list of list of exceptions?

Tried it. Im no n00b :)

Vista says "This program MUST be run with DEP turned on"

I even tried the OptIn and OptOut switches with the above command line and you get the same message.

You have to turn DEP of completely for Homeworld 2 to run. Thats until Relic release a patch, which will be in never.

The games are not compatible with Vista. ;)

And its mostly old games that dont know about things like DEP.

I tried running company of heroes on Vista and it broke.

I have a dual boot now one for general use vista, which I prefer and XP pro for games.

This is a most excellent way of getting your games to work in Vista

(Q) "my game doesnt work on vista"

(A) "install XP"

Update on Homeworld 2 not working in Vista:

Well after having turned DEP off completely using the command line switch. This being the only way to get Homeworld 2 to run. I came back a week later and turned DEP on again using the following switch:

bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx OptOut

This enables DEP by default for all programs, unless you choose to opt them out, (as covered already HW2 can't be opted out, hence disabling DEP).

I gave Homeworld 2 a whirl fully expecting it to crash before loading. WRONG! Now for some utterly inexplicable reason windows vista has decided that it does like Homeworld 2 after all and all that stuff about DEP was just a bit of fun at my expense

I am now running HW2 with DEP running and I have no clue what I changed. Windows literally just DECIDED to fix itself

yeah thats the setup i have, but i've also made a custom version of vista with all of the rubbish removed from it, such as the readyboost services, you can download this lil tool to create a custom vista ISO,

http://www.vlite.net/

or for XP versions use

http://www.nliteos.com/

the nlite version gives you the option to install programs with your installation.
So when i did my XP version i had my board drivers, sounds drivers, firefox, messenger all installed ready. All unattended too :)
