What are you top 5 android apps and why ?

here are mine

1 facebook. i know its a poor choice but its the one i use the most AND the android version is terrible! I have added a trillian beta to have the chat from facebook on. Face book is a must these days however you feel about it. personally i think they are shockingly bad but im powerless to do anything.

2. Foursqaure, foursquare is a location checkin program. i check in and it uplaods my location to twitter and facebook adn i can see where my mates are etc.. its great when your in town you see what pubs and clubs everyone is in and go meet up for a beer or a coffee during the day. also great for showing off when your somewhere really cool. some 14 year old in america walked to the north pole to be the first person to check in there.

3. app brain. app brain upgrades the market so you use a website instead of the market and you can add apps to your phone from your PC. it also rates and reccomends apps and keeps them upgraded and has betas and offers etc.. its really good at finding apps as there are so many to choose from these days its hard to know whats a good one and whats new etc.. try it at www.appbrain.com

4. Beebplayer, its basically Iplayer on the android so you can watch live channels or stream shows you missed on your phone from the BBC

5. sky news widget. its a widget that i have on my 2nd desktop it has all the headlines and you can watch the news reports or sky sports news for footy results etc.. I love this as i find it handy in queue's and on trains to use that time productively so i dont have to watch the news on the TV.

If you have android 2.2 tvcatchup.com works perfectly and turns your android into a freeview box or it s jut goosd as a tv guide, but a lot of people dont have 2.2 so its not a pick :)

please recommend some apps for me to try or try the ones i posted about :)

i have android jump its like doodle jump but free :) love angry birds and robo defense but i try to not have addictive games on my phone as i end up getting nothing done :) same with facebook i have ZERO apps on facebook.

once you get 2.2 you dont need the task killer its built in.

all the ones you mentioned were already on my nexus one i though they were standard..

i forgot BUMP for contact sharing and beign a tech guy the engadget widget is never off but since i found out that engadget is AOL im in two minds about it.

1) Opera Mini
2) Replica Island
3) Kaloer Clock
4) Abduction
5) Google Sky Map

That's with barely any thought going into it. If i could have one more then it's say Truth or Dare, needs more work but it's great fun at parties.

Yeah I use it occasionally but didn't pay the £24 or whatever it is....
Comes in handy to control the spare pc I have now setup without needing a monitor connected to it.

handy little app :D

I think i'm the only person who uses Opera Mini as the main browser, the interface is nice and simple and it's a hell of a lot faster than anything else i've tried, you even get the option to disable images and use other settings that allow 2G to actually be usable, really useful in conserving battery.

opera is actually the slowest browser made..

my contract is up for renewal so going to go for the galaxy s or iphone 4..is streaming iplayer etc as mentioned above count towards your data limit? And if so..how much does it use up per minute?

Spaceboy
14-09-10, 19:10
Depends if you're using Wi-fi (free) or 3G (counts toward your limit) at the time.

In short, streaming uses A LOT of data... I only ever do it when I know I'm on wi-fi.

Rough guess something around the 300mb / hour ?? Can't substantiate this though, tis purely a finger in the air figure ;)

Google Goggles :- takes a pic and searches google using the pic (amazing app)

how does this work?

it breaks the picture down into a numbered grid then compares the grid to a database of all previously scanned items.. its far from brilliant though, it works great in some circumstances where there is nothing in the background and the item is straight on but fails so badly when your outside and see a car you have no idea about or something like that.. i guess it will learn with time but it only works for me 30% of the time..

-Opera Mini. On my Galaxy S I find it much faster and more functional than the standard browser.

-ATK (Advance Task Killer). Absolutely essential for any Android device.

-AK Notepad. I'm genuinely surprised how much I use this simple little app. Importing/exporting to SD card is handy as hell.

-Gameboid/SNESiod. Oh the hours i've wasted already playing the likes of Super Metroid, F-Zero, FF: Tactics Advance, Pokemon Emerald and R-Type 3... all thanks to;

-Rom Buddy. Thousands upon thousands of free roms. No need for a DS anymore.

Spaceboy

is there a free rom app to try out before splashing the cash on rom buddy ? ;)

Joey Propane

I wouldn't call a couple of quid splashing but you could always go the standard google route. :P

SNESoid for sho, was amazing on my G1, yet to try it on my HD2 (running Froyo).

i thought google goggles uses gps to narrow down what it is too?

sibeer
17-09-10, 15:27
Think your right there marsey as it is supposedly good with landmarks. You can see it do the grid thing, it is amazing to watch when you give it something recognisable on a clear background, just far too easy to gazump at the moment.

Superewza
18-09-10, 15:24
How specific is it exactly? Like, if you take a picture of a car will it search for the make and model?

tystar
18-09-10, 15:28
Yeah it should do.

New fave Android app is Darkstone's Desire HD build for the HTC HD2. Can't wait for it to move out of Beta and get the camera working. Love the fact that we are getting better versions of Android running on a WinMo phone than available on any other ;)
