My recommendations for a mid range system would be to get something like the following.
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz, nice mid range dual core cpu. : - £116 (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/CPUs+%2F+Processors/Intel/Core+2+Duo/Intel+Core+2+Duo+E6750+2.66GHz+%28775%29+?productI d=27972)
ASUS P5K Intel iP35 Socket 775, nice mobo by Asus with one of the latest chipsets so you know its solid : - £74 (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Motherboards/Socket+775+%28Intel%29/ASUS+P5K+Intel+iP35+Socket+775+Motherboard+?produc tId=27298)
OCZ 2GB PC2-6400 Platinum Rev 2.0 (2x1GB), 2gb of OCZ memory for the money its hard to beat. £59. (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Memory/DDR2/DDR2+800+%28PC6400%29/OCZ+2GB+PC2-6400+Platinum+Rev+2.0+%282x1GB%29+?productId=26605 )
500GB Samsung Spinpoint SATA2 16MB, a decent fastish drive of reasonable size. : - £63 (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Hard+Drives/Serial+ATA/500GB+Samsung+Spinpoint+SATA2+16MB+?productId=2516 2)
OCZ 600W StealthXStream PSU, nice quite capable psu i have one myself. £53. (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Power+Supplies/500w+%2B/OCZ+600W+StealthXStream+PSU+?productId=26933)
EVGA GeForce 8600GTS 256MB PCI-E, pocket power house as long as you don't run silly high resolutions it should provide some decent gaming experirnces as well as allow you to watch dvd's etc on yout big screen tv. : - £126 (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Graphics+Cards/PCI-E/nVIDIA+GeForce+8+Series/EVGA+GeForce+8600GTS+256MB+PCI-E+?productId=26827)
22\" CiBox Widescreen TFT, should compliment the gfx card nicely. Theres quite a few monitors to choose from around £170 mark i chose this one as it has a good contrast ration and a fast responce time. : - £170 (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Displays/Monitors/TFT+20%22+%26+21%22/22%22+CiBox+Widescreen+TFT+-+DVI+-+Black+?productId=27976)
As per the buget system i recommended I have deliberately left out a case because they are a subjective choice, what i like might not necessary be to other peoples taste, likewise the optical drive, i might choose a black one and the builder might choose a sliver case. I will say check the details on the optical drives as not all come with software, some are also sata and some ide, check to see if its the one you want.
Keyboard and mouse can be purchased for a few pounds up so again i left this choice to the system builder. Also remember you will need an operating system
Total for the components above should come to approx £660, remember this DOESN'T include a case / keyboard / mouse or operating system, case / keyboard and mouse could cost around £50 (depending on how much you wanted to spend, it could be alot more) so call it £700 - £750ish + os and you have a decent midrange system which you could drop a quad core into and upgrade the graphics to make a pretty good top end system too.
