Hey All,

I bought the following from Aria early this month:
Intel Quad Core 6600 CPU
Asus P5K Deluxe MoBo
8GB's of Patriot Memory (4 sticks).

I'm using Vista 64 Ult and I keep getting random freezes, either when surfing the net, playing a game or just about anything
If I remove 4GB's of memory, the problem seems to be cured or nearly cured with just freezes now and again.

BIOS, drivers and Windows are all up to date.
I've tried various manual settings in the BIOS for memory.
Is it faulty memory or is there something else wrong ?

The rest of my equipment:
BFG Geforce 7800 GT OC graphics card.
3 SATA HD's
2 DVD drives.
750W PSU

Removing non essential components doesn't make a difference to the freezing.

Thanks for any help.

Does it make a difference which 2GB stick you remove?

If the fault is only apparent with a specific stick of RAM in place, then you have a faulty stick.
If the fault is only apparent whenever all four slots are filled and it doesn't matter what stick you remove then there's something else amiss...

What PSU are you using? I know it's 750W, but there's a world of difference between a generic 750W and something like the PC Power & Cooling 750W QUAD...

Thanks for the reply.
I've only taken out slots 3 and 4 to be honest.
I'll try the sticks from 3 and 4 in slots 1 and 2.
I ran the Vista memory test (from the installation DVD -> Repair -> Mem test) with all slots filled, but it didn't find any faults.

The PSU is a ThermalTake Toughpower unit

Why would you need 8GB seriously? Unless you are doing some huge files. I would test the first two sticks on mem test aswell.

I'd strongly suggest a BIOS update and a chat with the MoBo manufacturer to see what they can do... ASUS are usually pretty helpful and they;re tech support were really good when my K8N-DL failed...

The BIOS is up to date, but I'll contact Asus and get their advice.

Thanks very much.
All the best.
