Hey guys. Being 17 and school starting again so I can get a little bit of money from the ema. I was going to start my lessons soon.

I was just wondering what you people had as your first car and also if you can post pictures :D

The car I hope to get is a Nissan Almera p1 or p2.

Anyway here is too pictures of the cars I would love to get.

no such thing as a digital camera from what I recall when I started driving :)

Triumph Acclaim was my first, there are family pics with it in, and after it was written off when someone pulled out in front of me :cry

High five Pineapple!

My first car is my current car. I was late starting my lessons and have always been a slow learner. I have three years claim free driving but am only about halfway through my second year of my own car insurance policy. Technically, my first "car" which I drove on a full license was a Vauxhall Combo, which was being retired by the Post Office. My dad snapped it up because at the time, he needed a new van. He insured me on that so that I could do his deliveries for him and get some driving experience in. I highly recommend doing driving practice and experience after passing your test. By that, I mean drive around roads you know well, just to practice driving and getting used to the road on your own.

But my first car insured on my own policy which I actually went out and bought, was the car I am driving currently: a Nissan Almera N16 S, with the new circular rear lights and projector headlights. £580 per year to insure, £150 road tax per year.

The van is visible in that first one too, on the right.

My first car was a 1980 Austin mini 998cc, a pile of scrap prezzie from my dad on passing my test after badgering him for 6 months for it.

First car i bought was an F reg polo, in white for a grand, which i wrecked the suspension mountings on hitting a speed ramp at 40 while evading traffic cops

My first car was an X reg Escort (this is when the X was at the end of the licence plate - so 81/82).

Had that briefly at 18 then didnt get another car for a few years and have since had:-

1.0 J reg Nova - think this was the last year before they made the corsa - was a pile of rubbish, but was cheap to buy and insure and got me from A to B just.

1.1 R reg Peugeot 106 - written off in my one and only accident - not my fault and got all the money back and no loss of no claims.

1.2 N reg Punto - not a bad little car at the time

1.4 S reg 306 - Loved this car - the last Peugeot to have decent styling IMO, and the seating position was nice and low to the ground.

That was replaced by a 1.9 tdi 56 plate Passat - this was a company car I had for just over a year - huge car, really really long, but had some nice features like keyless ignition and electronic handbrake, made hill starts a doddle, as you just drove off and the handbrake came off automatically.

When I left that job I got myself a 1.6 51 plate Golf, which I had for almost two years, before swapping it out for my current 2.5l W plate BMW 323i - which I call the Beast :)

Edit forgot (above post just reminded me) - I learnt to drive in an old E plate (the black and silver plates) Mini - was horrible, but it had a wooden dash.

My 1st car was a petrol blue Mini Metro 1.3s. It rusted away quite quickly, to the point where one of my mates had a whizz out of the floor while I was driving.

It had that funny Hydrogas (spelling?) suspension which leaked one day & left me looking like a low rider.

The clutch master cylinder used to pop out if you pushed the clutch in too far, I used to drive around with clutch fluid just incase I managed to break it. I was often stuck in car parks half way out of a space, bonnet open, knocking the piston back into place again.

Great days.

He he - my first was a Mk 1 Golf 1100 "N" ...

It started a trend that has seen me through 14 Sciroccos, 3 Corrados, 3 more Golfs, Vento VR6, current Passat ... but despite seeming to all the world to be a "VW" fan, I have never owned either A Beetle or a GTi, and nothing has been powered by a 16v engine.

i passed my test in an almera. It was enough to almost put me off driving.

I drove worst than an almera.

Try a 1.2 clio sport with 130k on the clocks ;(

i never ever thought to take a pic of my first car.
it was a 1992 VW Golf. had a dodgy clutch (good thing, cos my gf wouldnt drive it cos she couldn't get it moving without stalling), 6" play in the steering, and the boot wouldn't open.
still loved it though :D

130k isnt high  Well, it probably is for a learning car.

The almera i learnt in had 80ish

I wasn't learning to drive. Mate let me drive his car around a car park one night.

No, 130k isn't high at all, high is 200k plus, even then, so long as it's maintained well over it's life, it'll be totally fine.

Hmm.. I'd say anything over 100k is high.

I always stick to under 80k miles when looking for a car.

InvaderGIR
04-09-10, 16:15
Well you are with the general public that know generally sod all about cars then. ;)

Example:

My car has done 160k in the past 12 years, that works out as roughly 13k pa.

I was looking for a modern car for my mum recently and most of the cars available were on 70-80k and about 5 years old which works out as 15k pa (roughly), modern cars are given a lot more mileage than older ones and so long as either is serviced properly, they will be totally fine at any mileage. This means for sensible people they can buy a 'high' (not actually high) mileage car on say 110k for half that of one on 65k simply because of the ignorance of the general public.

clemos
04-09-10, 17:14
But obviously if you had the choice over two cars, one with more mileage than the other, you'd choose the one with less.

InvaderGIR
04-09-10, 17:18
I'd chose the one that was in the best condition over all, which is more likely to be the higher mileage one.

clemos
04-09-10, 17:27
Well yes condition does come into it, but a car with less mileage is more likely to be in better condition.

1st car, started as a rather tidy LOOKING cooper lookalike.. wasnt as solid as we thought, fixed resprayed and it ended up looking like this...

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs386.snc3/23602_1351083409392_1000586347_31046997_6956579_n. jpg

Next up, after dad scrapped it, came a 1989 mini mayfair, crashed it the first time I drove it, had it about 6 months or so, but was rather tidy, especially as this came FROM a scrapyard.. (Had a couple of dents, 2 of them just popped out)

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs426.ash1/23602_1351083689399_1000586347_31047004_6606918_n. jpg

Then I bought a cooper :D and killed the gearbox, then engine, then it needed more work, so has had a bare shell rebuild over the last 10 years, but its still in the garage atm..

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs426.ash1/23602_1351083529395_1000586347_31047000_5955417_n. jpg
Then I bought an Mg metro... it ended up like this...

Shame as it was a 1 lady owner car and didnt have a mark on it before it was stolen :(

Then I bought a Peugeot, then another one, and another, and another, and another, then I got my civic :D

InvaderGIR
04-09-10, 21:54
Well yes condition does come into it, but a car with less mileage is more likely to be in better condition.

If two cars are the same price and one is higher mileage than another, obviously lower miles would be the better choice...but that generally isn't the case, they will be a lot more for a low miles car and you can in fact get a better higher mileage car for less. No brainer there.

Depends on the make. My Celica has 77,000 miles on the clock, I know many Celica owners in my Celica Club who have 200,000 miles plus on the clock without any problems.

Here's a story for you. When I bought my 'bike from Triumph back in 1997 I collected it from Triumph motorcycles in Hinckley - they showed me round the works. In one of their workshops they were dismantling a 900cc Triple which had come from Germany with 250,000 kilometres on the clock. It had had regular servicing and oil changes, and all the tolerances were still within the manufacturers reference tolerances.

To an extent, with modern technology, mileage is unimportant if the vehicle is properly maintained.

And my BMWs both had 160k, my 306 had 180k and I took it to 206k and got bored, brother had a 205 diesel on 300k, again, got bored and changed.

Maintenance is what is important, good service history is better than low miles.

A lot of people on **** seem to think cars over 100k are rot ridded death traps. :closet

That's the general public view that the sensible people are trying to stamp out. ;)

I agree that a lot of instructors will change cars though, people seem to want to be learning in these modern things, which in honesty isn't a good thing...as often they will then get into their 'banger' without half the safety aids of the learner car and they won't know what to do.

I learnt in a 106 1.5D with no PAS or anything like that, it was a horrible little car, but it did the job and I passed. It then went on to own some utterly rubbish cars and now some alright ones. :)

My first car was a Ford Sierra 1.6GL, started with RWD and only had one FWD which was pretty boring (Mondeo ST200) nice to drive but not fun.
I currently have an M3 and my 5th Sierra (2000e) which is on 168k miles
