Hi,

I've had it with my internet being sucky and dropping the connection all the time then when i phone up the first thing he says is;

"i'm seeing you download a lot sir"

Ermmmm so, whats that got to do with my internet being crap?

"just saying sir, seems you download a lot"

Right, RAM it, give me my Mac code and stick your internet or what little i get.

If you wouldn't mind clicking on the link and looking at number 3 please the SKY deal, is it right £10 a month for unlimited?

I know 3 other people who are happy with SKY and thats £7 less than what i pay.

Thanks

Doesn't answer your question, but how far into the contract with them are you? A lot of them charge a lot as a cancellation fee.

You may be aware of this, I don't know, but thought I'd make sure.

El Wayneo
27-08-10, 22:08
I had a 12 month contract but that finished am now on the 1 month rolling contract, so at the end of next month my internet ends, no fees or anything, they wanted me to mail the router back, but my contract says after 12 months its mine.

Ahh cool. Are you sure it's Be*'s end and not yours?

El Wayneo
27-08-10, 22:12
Yeah i had BT out about 2 1/2 years ago when the phoneline was all noisy as well, got a new line in, perfect after that.

Its only been the last 3 months that it sucks, drops out every 40 minutes for 2 or so minutes, i'm not on a fair use policy or throttling either but i've started to notice that i get throttled around 3.30pm.

AaronWHUFC
27-08-10, 22:14
Sky aren't bad, not sure on the service front thought.

If you want value, talk talk are the way to go. Up to 24 Mbps for £20 something pounds a month depending on your call plan.

Service wise, on the phone their site, but they have a Customer Service Forum with dedicated forum staff during working hours. Issues get resolved in around a few days with minimal fuss on there.

As far as I could see Sky be leasing a BT line to get you online, meaning you have to pay line rental on top of the £10pm so + £11 so £22pm for BB and Phone seems pretty decent.

27-08-10, 22:21
BT Tiscali both capped my line Sky never have:thumb:

If you're an extreme downloader, Virgin 50Mb is probably the way forward if you can get it.

Sucks you've had a bad experience with Be, they've been awesome to us and as much as I'd like to save money as a student by switching to basically an identical service with O2, Be's support has been exceptional to us... we called up at 4AM once when our internet went down and they even called us back to tell us when it had been restored (as it happened, someone had broken a cable at Be HQ so most of their northern customers were without service for 90 minutes or something). We've never noticed any throttling.

Yeah they've been good and i used to recommend them but the last couple of months its been pretty poor.

Plus i'll be saving £100 a year.

Well bethere is o2 tbh btw, they purchased bethere few years back so LLU is really o2 an bethere equipment. What your experiencing is them oversubscribed their service basically guy is moaning when he says your downloading alot :p i left them about 20 months ago now due to poor pings at peak times an service falling over, i was only 200 metres from the exchange an got the full 24mbps download an 2.5mbps upload. Basically they got too many users now an their servers can't keep up at peak times hence service suffers.

Been with sky for about 18-20 months now (currently pay £7.50 a month for the broadband as we also have the calls and line with them and TV - line rental and calls are excellent), and I can say the quality of the connection I get is brilliant. I can only sync at about 9meg due to my distance from the exchange, but I always sync at it and can get a steady 900KB/s down 24/7 if I wish. I have never once been throttled or had any notices about my downloading/uploading.

I use my connection for ftp for work, VPN phone for work as well as the usual and have not had any issues with any.

I have yet to need to call support, but my colleague who has was very impressed with the speed that they resolved his issue.

I can easily recommend Sky LLU Broadband.

Am with BeThere - generally pretty pleased with them...
My only gripe is my router started dropping out and it took threatening to leave them to send me out a new and updated router.

You could try that option - just a thought :) I couldn't live without my 16Meg :D

talk talk are rubbish, virgin throttle lines depending on areas, my mate is on 50mb and gets throttled to about 10mb regularly, when youre paying that much for it it can really wind you up. but otherwise the low ping with virgin is great.

as you cant get virgin what about O2? i hear mixed things about them but mostly good things.

can't say virgin have ever throttled my line its 50Mb constantly day or night
tho i have had problems with there shockingly bad customer service.

if I had yo go to ADSL it would be with BE so i think as your getting bad service from BE and virgins out the question as you can't have it in your area

I would be ringing BETHERE back and seeing of you can get a better member of staff this time.

yeh virgin are terrible they hve no customer care but only customer sales team.

they definately throttle my mates 50mb speed

something i also discovered is that there are seperate speeds for streaming videos, he can download usually at the full 50mb but his streaming speed would be a mere 2mb :/

Throttled? as in traffic management well he should complain cause they is no traffic management on 50mbps lines, i download over 3TB monthly at full speed 24/7, however some sites like youtube are crap an can't supply your line with enough bandwidth, possibly could just be the whoever your downloading off just doesn't have the bandwidth to feed your mates 50mbps line.

+1, one of my friends also has it and he doesn't get filtered, he also regularly downloads >2TB/month. Tony, your mate should get it checked out or see if the servers he's using are literally just 10Mb up, in which case he's being limited by them.

do you think its because he upgraded recently from 10mb? as the throttling is always around peak times it kinda made sense, he used to get throttled on his 10mb badly thats why he upgraded to the 50mb.

i shall take a look into this for him. thanks :)

Ive been with o2 a good 18 months, and Im sure I dont get thottled, newsgroups max out my line whenever I use it, and torrents can max out my upload most of the time..
Cant say Ive ever had a problem with then either. Apart from when theres been faults elseware.

i'm surprised at Be being crap like that, although, i have recommended them in the past and still do for those that can't get cable, because with no capping or throttling, those that dont know any better can use all their streaming sites and not worry about hitting limits.

I can understand about their service growing and slowing down, i've heard bad things about sky, and to be honest, look now at what their tv package costs you a year, how long do you think it will be before their cheap or free broadband starts ramping up cost wise, and caps and stuff start coming in

Yeah chances are the system still think he's on 10mbps an applying traffic management. Tbh he needs phone them an say during peak his speeds drop like they did when he was on 10mbps an see what they say.

We use Virgin - never had any problems & if we do get a problem (usually kids messing with the box at the end of the street) they usually sort it fairly quickly (had that problem a few years ago & it was solved in 2 hours). not really much use if you cant get virgin but thats my 2p!

I would like to confirm that Talktalk should be avoided at all costs, a few of the reasons I say this below

1 - The line was put in a whole month later than they had promised, never even told me that there were problems or anything until I rang up, some mix up between them and BT in the end but I was the one who had to call BT to sort the line out even though they were supposed to deal with it all. (this was a new house that I was moving in to so no MAC code was required or anything like that)

2 - Whenever I rang up I was on hold for ages, more than once my cordless landline phone ran out of batteries and I had to ring from my mobile which cost a lot in the end.

3 - My line was intermittent for the entire 9 months that I was with them, the best I managed without a problem was about a week, at the worst it was every couple of minutes. BT even put a new line up as Talktalk claimed it was old, it didn't change anything. I lost count of the amount of times I rang them and of course every single time they make you reboot the router and the PC, change the filters etc etc. I even got my mate to check everything, he is a CCNP qualified networker and he found everything as it should be.

4 - and this is the one that really got to me, I rang them up to cancel - got through straight away (what a surprise). They persuaded me some how to give them one more change before I left (it was in contract but I was receiving the service I was paying for so I would refuse to pay any remaining contract) and suddenly from the next day we never had another problem which lead me to wonder why they couldn't just sort the problem out when I rang the first time so many months before.

I'm with the Post Office now and I have never had a problem at all with them, I had to call services once because I had lost my login details but I was through almost immediately and they were very helpful.

I'm still thinking about moving my phone and net to Sky though as I have TV with them now so that would save me some money.

Depends which Sky product they are on if it isn't the max one then it's just a rebranded normal bt product and non llu..if it's the max unlimited one then thats llu and should be fine unless they have a sucky line

Bundling all the things seems like a good idea, but in reality its a complete pain in the a*se should you wish to change one of them, and if your not paying top whack, you can expect to get p*ss poor customer service, in fact, the fastest call back you'll get is from the sales team trying to sell you even more stuff you dont want !

Ill add to the avoid talktalk like the plague..
Dad signed up with them, we never had the internet with them as they where incapable of migrating us, even after we supplied a mac code.. twice.
So we moved back to bt/zen and then talktalk started threatening court action, a quick letter back saying basically go on then, we'll see you in court and counter sue for breach of contract and they never contacted us again.

Can't say i blame you, the TV is just way over priced, combining the phone and internet is ok i guess, your on a regular line, so know what you'll get, i've got cable, so phones and broadband are on it, problem is i have no idea what the line to the house is even capable of, so for me it's a major gamble to switch, whereas if i'd kept my regular phone originally, then i would know, but at the time i got 2 phone lines on cable and was using one purely for the dialup

Well VirginMediocre today have been crap ....

1am - Internet stops working, modem looks good - give up go to bed !
8am - Internet working :) .... must have been overnight maintenance, fair enough
12noon - No Internet :( modem looks good, but router label is not lit, so no internet connection, although the "internet" light is lit on it - that's misleading as all it means is the modem is plugged in.
1pm after many reboots, restarts, resets cable tests etc etc etc call VM
1:30pm after explaining i've already done all the things indian dude is going through in his noddy guide (tech support my ar*e) he can see the modem, communicate with it - we decide the router has gone, and wont talk to the modem .... pc on the other hand talks fine with the router via wifi - can access config page remotely everything
2:30pm borrow buddies laptop (i cant be bothered to move this pc and all the hassle to get it to the other end of the house) - connect laptop to router, nothing, as expected, connect it direct to the still modem, nothing.. - reboot modem - nothing, same as before all lights look good self checks ok but not talking to computer, as in no internet .. take it back to friend, plug it into his modem, all's good
4:30pm - back to tech support, got an English guy :weeee explain everything ... got a techie visit booked for saturday with specific instructions to bring new modem, and a laptop to eliminate the possibility it is my kit..... in about 5 minutes total call length :thumb:

6:00pm - to basically prove to myself that the router is not to blame i hook up the home plugs, set them up in 2 wall sockets close to each other so i know they are ok, use the encryption button (dont like that as it doesnt really tell you if that worked or not you just kinda have to trust it) ... then plugged them in where i need them (2 out of 5 bar connection, not bad considering the environment) - still limited or no connectivity as far as internet is concerned
6:30pm was reading instructions etc, and noticed the home plugs were sort of not connected, in like a standby mode - seems this is some power saving mode as no connection was found on the second one).... so loaded the software up
6:45pm had some fun getting the software to recognise the homeplug connected while it was in sleep mode, unplugged it reconnected it to the mains, that solved that, got the 2 set with the encryption on, perfect :)... took about 10-15minutes
7pm - WOW i have internet all of a sudden again.... bugger, right about the time i finished configuring the home plugs ! typical.
7:15pm - ok, lets try the router then, reconnected it, and with the required restarts on kit and connections, router kicks in orange light on the label ... connected !!! tested wifi - working :) .. tested home plug through router - working :)

WTF! .... 7 hours down time, and they swear there was not a problem with internet access at their end and modem was visible/working when i called ... screw it, the second guy said it would not be the first time the socket has given problems on the modem.... so they can still come saturday and give me a new one :P

watched me switch between router and wifi and moden direct, all working great, explained to him everything and he rolled his eyes and said, 90% sure network issue, nothing wrong with modem on checking, and obviously nothing up with my kit... left me his mobile number and said if it goes again in the next week call him direct and he'll come replace the modem regardless (probably then go bash someone upside the head for wasting his time lol)
