Ok guys. I'm just about ready to go out and buy me a new Samsung Galaxy S. My only issue what I need included in the contract.
I was under the impression that Andriod phones use Google Maps. So do they use google maps for their satnav too? If so, how is this paid for? Does it count as internet usage? or push? Or what... I really have no idea how satnav on a phone works.
The reason I ask is that Orange offer Orange Maps Sat nav for £5 extra a month. Which got me wondering if I needed to purchase that to be able to use the phone for any satnav at all!
Thanks all

I'm with Orange, I have Orange maps installed, but I've never used it.

Google maps works brilliantly, I just enable GPS and mobile data when I'm using it, I think it needs the mobile data to work out routes initially... so depending on your plan it's just the data you need to worry about.

If you're on a contract like mine, I get 750mb per month, I'm nowhere close to using that data allowance - so Orange maps is totally not worth it imo.

I have orange with 500 MB a month and the most I have ever used is about 75 mb. I use my sat nav a far bit too. It needs to be connected to the internet for most/all of the journey though to work properly

it uses the network for data all the time as it constantly loads the map image.

I had copilot live installed on my hero... since the 2.1 upgrade it now just throws up an error about a library :(
Must try to fix that now this threads reminded me.

Ah ok thanks guy
The contract I'm looking at includes 500mb of data so I wont bother with Orange Maps then. That's £5 extra a month which can go on booze ;)

Yeah I also use an orange 3g sim with my galaxy, I use google maps as the satnav, although google earth can also use it altho I couldnt find the voice data for earth but it has a funky auto rotate mode that changes to match your direction so you get a cool "Virtual POV" :D
Ofc not that you get to watch it as your driving along lol.

I believe you can store the maps on the SD card.

I think storing on SD card is a Froyo 2.2 feature.

Just put 2.2 on my hero so I'll have a look

yes you need 2.2 AND the app needs to been updated for that feature to be used..
if you have both of them you can goto settings/manage applications and there is the option to move to SD there

alternatively you can get the apps2sd app which notifies you when you can move an app to the SD card and i just have it set to just move them over... its suprising how you can fill up you phone storage fast

They're talking about maps not the app...
