View Full Version : Need to upgrade my 7600GS PCI-E Card
What is a good card for around £70-£90 these days, ive seen a few cards like 8500GT or 8600GT but are they much better than my existing card?
Yes there would be a noticable difference in peformance from a 7600gs to a 8600GT but for the newer DirectX 10 games 8600's wont run them well at higher resolutions.
If you were thinking of moving over to DirectX 10 games and future proofing your system then i'd recommend purchase of either an 8800GTX or 2900XT.
But yes for £80 an 8600GT should do the job :)

many thanks, will take a look at it
sorry, i take it the 8400/8500 are alot better than an 8600gs card? they are alot cheaper than the 8600. Is ther one you would recommend?
no.. basically:
8800 > 8600 > 8500 > 8400
as a general rule of thumb, the higher the number, the better the card.
The PCI-E graphics cards i would recommend around this price (£70) are: -
nVidia GeForce 8600GT (74.45 exc. VAT)

or
ATi Radeon HD 2600XT (£54.95 exc. VAT)

Both of these support DirectX 10.
agreed :)

i take it you meant 7600GS there, in that case yes.
agreed :)

They're just companies, like Intel and AMD. They have had times where their products are better than the other company's, but it's the card you should look at, and not the manufacturer of the chip.
Unless you're still bitter with nVIDIA about the loss of 3dfx, as I am. Heh.
3dfx... those were the days...
I used to love my voodoo1, before i got a voodoo3. They were great cards.

I had one of the very first Voodoo Graphics cards with the mechanical relays - whenever the GPU kicked in, you'd hear that \"CLICK... CLINK\".
They really were the bomb. ;D
The ones with the mechanical relays were really rare, I think - wasnt it only one manufacturer who made them with mechanical relays, and the rest made it with electronic ones?

Yep, Orchid were the only manufacturer to use them, and later switched to solid-state relays like all the others. Unfortunately, they're not rare.
Oh I thought they were...
Still cool tho! ;) hehe
